P.S. I am several decades into my adulthood, and it's a Friday night. Just thought I should make note of that real quick.

I don't know how you can claim to have never heard these phrases that we now use in everyday conversation, that's just weird.

They're weird phrases, too. If anyone ever said them to me, their origins in an old sitcom as catch phrases escaped me entirely, so that they were just some strange thing(s) a person decided to say for unknown reasons. 1975 to 1985 are nearly a pure void in my knowledge of popular broadcast television.

It blows my mind to realize that this show ran until 1995. I can never really get my head around how beloved it seems to be among people a couple of years younger than me.

xpost This is, no joke, my (one decade younger) sister's favorite show of all time. I got her the box set in the fancy little house for xmas one time and I thought she was going to cry.

(NB, she thinks Fuller House is irredeemable garbage. I'm not sure what the distinction is, but I accept her ruling.)

Why would a tower of dreams even have seams in the first place? That doesn't seem structurally sound, particularly if it's so overfilled with love that it's begun to burst. Please evacuate the tower, folks.

Ah but the show WAS the answer to the question

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 20 August 2018 20:38 (five years ago) link

I used to get mad as a kid when they shortened the theme to cut out the pre-chorus that rarely got played after early seasons

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 August 2018 20:41 (five years ago) link

the theme had a gravitas that the show did not live up to

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 August 2018 20:41 (five years ago) link

There are a number of shows whose theme songs seem to have been selected more or less at random from a box of generic theme song submission tapes. Occasionally, the artist would be asked to amend the song so as to include the show's title (see: the Silver Spoons theme writer, who clearly didn't know or bother to ask what 'silver spoons' actually referred to), but as long as the lyrics made some vague reference to humans interacting with other humans it was basically good enough for broadcast.

Theme song was oddly prophetic about the decline of paperboys and evening TV, it's true.

The inexorable rise of identity condiments (Sund4r), Monday, 20 August 2018 22:46 (five years ago) link

Btw, I have never seen Silver Spoons and only know of it because it has been referenced on ilx. I'm sure it was better than Full House, though, which is sort of the thing. Like, I feel like this show has endured more strongly in the public's imagination than Family Ties, even.

The inexorable rise of identity condiments (Sund4r), Monday, 20 August 2018 22:49 (five years ago) link

which is why we have Fuller House, which is worse because it now acts like it knows how bad it was in the 80s

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 August 2018 22:52 (five years ago) link

Having recently been sucked into an episode when I realized that it was inexplicably being broadcast on actual tv in the year 2018, I can promise you that Silver Spoons is at least as bad as Full House.

Bruise Harmsby and the Rage (Old Lunch), Monday, 20 August 2018 22:53 (five years ago) link

(These cable networks dedicated to shows that haven't even been seen in reruns for the past thirty years are very good at snuffing out any lingering illusions you might have that the programs you watched as a kid were anything but terrible.)

The inexorable rise of identity condiments (Sund4r), Monday, 20 August 2018 23:02 (five years ago) link

or Today's Special

xpost yeah I can still watch Fresh Prince, but it succeeded mostly due to humor that wasn't cornball and tackling some pretty heavy topics (ie the episode where Will gets shot, or when his biological father abandons him...again)

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Monday, 20 August 2018 23:03 (five years ago) link

I'm guessing you don't mean the TVOntario classic Today's Special.

"cowabunga dudes!" isn't even a full house original, they just lifted it wholesale. i guess that's true of some of the others too, like have mercy

wait a second, maybe full house shared a parent company with TMNT? Full House = ABC, TMNT in the late 80s = ? maybe they also owned mylanta?

Karl Malone, Friday, 31 August 2018 00:08 (five years ago) link

TMNT was a spin-off of Full House IIRC (from the season when Joey got that job as the pitchman for shredded cheese and got completely lost in his Shredder persona until Stephanie taught him an important lesson about family and sharing and not unleashing hordes of robotic ninjas on San Francisco).

I honestly don't remember (or get) "oh Mylanta" at all. I would have probably voted "have mercy" if I'd brought myself to vote.
