deej, Thursday, 24 July 2008 12:55 (fifteen years ago) link

lol xp

deej, Thursday, 24 July 2008 12:55 (fifteen years ago) link

oh nev mind thats the same mix ive been listening to

deej, Thursday, 24 July 2008 12:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Love the vocal in the background of "New Mexico" shouting "you're not the only one!" - sounds really doom-laden for some reason!

Tim F, Thursday, 24 July 2008 13:16 (fifteen years ago) link

But really the heart of this mix for me is the Sly Mongoose/Kwanzaa Posse section. If I had that Kwanzaa Posse track I would play it at every party ever.

(Basic Groove)
(Radio Mix)
(Dimension Of Blue Clouds Mix)
(Hypno Beat)
(Funk Rebirth)
(Afro Ambient Mix)
(Mellow Mix)

max, Thursday, 24 July 2008 13:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah that zshare link is not quite the right one, but still good. It's more self-consciously "balearic".

Tim F, Thursday, 24 July 2008 13:36 (fifteen years ago) link

the 'funk re-birth' mix has verses!

max, Thursday, 24 July 2008 13:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm gonna be asking for help with Visti's "After Dark" mix soon. 9 minutes in and it's so good. Second track is just insane...

Tim F, Thursday, 24 July 2008 13:41 (fifteen years ago) link

while we're playing the tracklist game, any guesses on mark e's mystery mix? i know the second-to-last track he uses and that's about it

i really love "shulme" and the smith and mudd album in general's been growing on me lately

impudent harlot, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:08 (fifteen years ago) link

aside from "still going theme" i don't know anything on the after dark mix. the track after that is (a remix of?) "forever more" by moloko

impudent harlot, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Not that it helps but 5:59 on teh Visti Cosmic mix was used by Prins Thomas at the Gun Club last year. Its on the mix from that at around 35:00 of Part 1 of his mix.

san frandisco, Thursday, 24 July 2008 22:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I think, when we look back at Balearic, we'll see it peaked with Reinterpretations.

I know, right?, Thursday, 24 July 2008 22:32 (fifteen years ago) link

fred deakin 'nu balearica' mix looks spot-on

CD01:
1. Williams - Love On A Real Train
2. Aeroplane - Caramellas
3. In Fragranti - Additional Alpha Blocker
4. Kaoru Inoue The Secret Field (Todd Terje Remix)
5. Hatchback - White Diamond (Prins Thomas Miks Del 1 & 2)

7. Antena - On The Boat (Rubber Room's Disco Devil Remix)
8. Sasse - Mount Juneau
9. Professor Genius - Across The Spree

.
.

so - any consensus on this ?

i loved deakins triptych 3 cd set given that it was totally all over the place and a fascinating listen.
is this nu-balearic set a good'un for us newbies to the genre (loved AMO1/Studio stuff i have heard)

mark e, Friday, 1 August 2008 08:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I haven't got it (YET) but from the tracklist alone it looks like the perfect overview. I listened to samples of the tracks I don't know and they all sound ace.

Possibly it might get a bit samey over two discs - it's the only commercial mix I've seen that hones in on this sound so consistently. But it looks very good.

Tim F, Friday, 1 August 2008 08:21 (fifteen years ago) link

absolutely.
he's obviously a fan of the scene and pushed the licencing through sharpish, these making this a fine looking quickfire starter pack that i suspect i'm going to give in to my urges and buy in a few hours time.

mark e, Friday, 1 August 2008 08:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean it has "Piece Together" and the Quiet Village remix of Mudd's "Spielplatz" on it! You can't go wrong!

Tim F, Friday, 1 August 2008 08:49 (fifteen years ago) link

"Schoon" from Toby Tobias' Space Shuffle is very nice.

willem, Friday, 1 August 2008 09:09 (fifteen years ago) link

the deakin mix is actually really well put together.

braveclub, Friday, 1 August 2008 09:10 (fifteen years ago) link

yup.
sounds great, looks great (proper effort in the packaging !), reads great.
perfect for those of us who dont hunt out the limited 12" issues and wants to hear what this groove is all about.
i also love the way that fred writes his mixes up.
he did the same for triptych - makes the mix all the more personal

OMG Aeroplane live OMG

They were so good! When they were playing their own and similar stuff (Mungolian Jet Set remix of "Moon River", Tensnake remix of "I'll Be By Your Side" etc.) it was like the entire dancefloor was enveloped in a giant bubble of E. It was very deliberately populist and untasteful too - "Love Is In The Air", "Happy Together", "Heaven Is In The Backseat Of My Cadillac", plus a great bootleg of "God Only Knows" over melodramatic schaffel. All subjected to ridiculous amounts of EQ trickery. Also I liked how genuinely into the camp aspects of their aesthetic they are. As only one played at a time the other would be in the audience jumping up and down and getting everyone to sing along to their words of their own remixes (MGMT, Cut Copy, The Shortwave Set) with absolute unselfconsciousness. I was impressed, too, by the enthusiasm of the crowd, which I had initially thought was a lot of post-work revellers at the gig only by coincidence. But no, everyone seemed to recognise the Aeroplane tracks (mind you it's not hard to), and half the crowd ended up singing along to "Your Love". I was most disturbed by a small crowd of fine-looking young homosexual men who appeared to know every word of Matias Aguayo's "Minimal".

Tim F, Saturday, 23 August 2008 11:07 (fifteen years ago) link

jealous!!

max, Saturday, 23 August 2008 11:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Also based on the Resident Advisor description of the track I'm pretty sure they played Patrice Baumel's "Roar" - RA says it sounds more like a lawnmower revving up and conking out over and over again, and that is exactly what this massive track was like. In effect it was a bit like "Doppelwhipper" - massive crowd response.

Tim F, Saturday, 23 August 2008 11:22 (fifteen years ago) link

That Fred Deaking Nu-Balearica comp looks like it'd be pretty excellent in this style.
