aisle two for grips, sir.

This pissed up idiot that used to live around the corner from me, went into the Savile Town Asda with a friend after they had a skinful one night, got into an argument with him and slashed his throat - leaving him with a 6 inch laceration. That's what you really call giving in to anger in a supermarket setting!

Yeah, probably the wrong thread for this as it never made me angry, just part of the culture shock of returning to the UK after spending my adulthood abroad, would be nice if they could put up a sign or something though, there are plenty of people trying desperately to pack teetering piles of groceries and getting tutted at.

My grandfather served in the Air Force.

I live within ten minutes of an AFB.

I even wore my freebie Air Force t-shirt today.

All that to say, I don't think the United States Air Force is AF about anything.

calamity gammon (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 3 November 2018 22:18 (five years ago) link

I must have mentioned this before. It's almost a given.

But the dependence people put on their GPS systems drives me up a fucking wall. My kid's karate studio moved to a bigger location. Before the first class on Saturday, a few of the parents harangued the instructor because their GPS told them to turn 100 yards too late. "And then it tried to get me to go all the way through Boyle Park!" One parent was slightly upset because they arrived 20 minutes late, thanks to the GPS. I remember her proclaiming at her first class at the old place, "It told me to get on the interstate!"

I'm just an old country boy from the sticks who learned to drive on a manual transmission and instinctively learned to know where I was going before I left the fucking house. The new address of the dojo has been emailed and plastered on flyers and drilled into our heads. How did no one think, Huh, wonder where this place might be? I'll look it up on Google Maps/Apple Maps/Bing Maps/OpenStreetMap/Mapquest/Delorme USA.

How do you just hop into the driver's seat and just go, "OK, Computer. Tell us where we'll go today!" Wheee.

pplains, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 15:21 (five years ago) link

i hate that too!

worst road trip of my life was my friend offering to drive to a resort for a work function - she said she knew where it was etc. and then learning halfway there that she had no CLUE where it was but that she’d “figure it out” and there was no cell service for google maps or anything while we’re flying down the i-5 ... all the while I’m like you’re the DRIVER surely it’s your job to work this out before you get in the cockadoodie car you guileless twit ... or at least ask a passenger to navigate & help figure out the route ahead of time. Stressful AF! thumbs down to all of that nonsense

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 8 November 2018 04:40 (five years ago) link

Sunny's got a good story about being on a work trip in New Jersey for a week. She and this older co-worker had taken the wrong turn in the rental and decided to head back the other way via the George Washington Bridge.

They're driving around upper Manhattan, and her co-worker peers over the steering way up to the sky and wonders aloud, "OK, so where are we now?"

^^ That's probably an argument for GPS, but then she wouldn't have that story.

pplains, Thursday, 8 November 2018 13:25 (five years ago) link

hahaha omg

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 8 November 2018 15:13 (five years ago) link

I was embarrassed that I had to use a sort-of GPS when we went back to my hometown (Canberra) on a road trip a couple years back. I thought I still knew how to get around everywhere but it'd been 20 years so I figured I'd navigate to help B drive, using GMaps's road GPS guide thing.

"turn left ahead? WTF? ITS A ROUNDABOUT WITH 6 EXITS WHICH ONE IS 'LEFT' FFS ARGH". My memory of where to go just ABANDONED ME in the face of the crazy map blue line.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 9 November 2018 03:14 (five years ago) link
