Finland's Radux is Nuclear Assault Redux on their debut EP Disaster Imminent on Svart Records. Derivative but fun.

Can you name a band in any genre that can claim two of the best albums of the year thirty years apart?

Obituary came close; their last album was great, 28 years after their debut.

grawlix (unperson), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 19:27 (five years ago) link

for some reason i got sucked into a looong (and only part 1) and somewhat cheaply made documentary about Rigor Mortis last night....hilariously narrated by Phil Anselmo who is also a talking head in it...

anyway kind of interesting, though jeez it's detailed almost a gig by gig breakdown

def some wild texas boys

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link

new thou record is their best, very tuneful, nice guitar tones, there's a weird black metal interlude way down in the mix at one point for reasons unknown

adam, Tuesday, 4 September 2018 20:52 (five years ago) link

I was at the debut of that doc with the Rigor Mortis guys doing a Q&A. They told stories they left out of the doc because they were “in poor taste”

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 4 September 2018 21:51 (five years ago) link

um so how'd that go

Paul Reverse and the rediaRs (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 22:58 (five years ago) link

They were in poor taste. And some slightly criminal.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 4 September 2018 23:13 (five years ago) link

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but I met Bruce when Warbeast played NYC a couple of years ago. Super nice guy. And Rigor Mortis were great. Mike Scaccia was easily one of the most criminally under-recognized guitarists of the whole thrash era. He did some shit even with Ministry ("TV Song") that's fucking mind-blowing.

grawlix (unperson), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 23:24 (five years ago) link

I feel like he was born with the speed picking ability of one of those 1960s country dudes lilke Joe Maphis but he turned it towards evil

Paul Reverse and the rediaRs (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 23:39 (five years ago) link

The Rigor Mortis guys were such sweethearts to me every time I met them. Sadly I didn't get to see them with Mike.

i never liked ken mode before but their new album is sounding pretty alright

pret-ty dang alright

j., Wednesday, 5 September 2018 03:23 (five years ago) link

I liked the last one a lot, and this one sounds pretty good on first listen.

o. nate, Friday, 7 September 2018 00:57 (five years ago) link

yeah, on first impression seems to split the difference between the last one and the older stuff, with a nice sheen.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 7 September 2018 02:28 (five years ago) link

New Satan album is out and, on first listen, would appear to have RIFFS

jmm, Friday, 7 September 2018 13:04 (five years ago) link

they can do no wrong in my book

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 7 September 2018 13:07 (five years ago) link

Brian Ross is 64, still sounds awesome, and concurrently handles vocal duties for a whole-ass other band (Blitzkrieg)

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 7 September 2018 13:35 (five years ago) link

I reviewed the Satan record and agree with all of the above comments!

I love Satan

Listening to the Siege of Power album, which is Chris Reifert on vocals and three dudes from Asphyx and/or Hail of Bullets and/or Grand Supreme Blood Court on guitar, bass, and drums. Care to guess what it sounds like?

it sounds fuckin rad is what

If you like Krisiun, you will like the new Krisiun album a lot. It's head-down, blasting death metal with no intros or other BS. Eight tracks in 38 minutes: they come, tear your face off, and leave. I saw them completely smoke Nile live about 10 years ago. This year, they're playing with Suffocation (on Frank Mullen's farewell tour), Cattle Decapitation and Soreption, a band I'm not familiar with - the NYC date is 11/16, and I might just go.

Advance singles for A Forest Of Stars are making me excited a bit

I love the new Krisiun but one of the riffs is fucking "Chopsticks"

The new Satan and The Skull are amazing

Passing up Priest and Purple tonight to interview Aaron Turner when Sumac plays in town.

been revisiting some albums from earlier this year. so far, Usurpress and Tomb Mold seem to be the ones I'm most likely going to expend energy stumping for at year's end

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Monday, 10 September 2018 14:19 (five years ago) link

A lot of good records, but I feel I haven't found the top 3 records of the year yet.
Recommended at least: Abigor, Krisiun, Necrophobic, Summoning, Ungfell, Urfaust, Wiegedood, Varathron, Skeletal Remains, Messa, Kły, Funeral Mist, Cosmic Church, Délétère, Ataraxy, Alrakis

Siegbran, Monday, 10 September 2018 15:21 (five years ago) link

Will give those all a try, ty - there's usually at least two things in your yearly metal trawl that I love

imago, Monday, 10 September 2018 16:11 (five years ago) link

Likewise.

Twelve days.

There's an advance track on their bandcamp, I've seen some dispiriting reax to it, I'm going to wait to hear the whole thing at once. Coven was a bit of a chore but I'm hopeful some of the magic of their prior work comes back.

Devilock, Tuesday, 11 September 2018 16:03 (five years ago) link

saw Sumac the other night and they completely blew me away. new stuff sounds great live. touring with Dalek who also crushed

gman59, Tuesday, 11 September 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

I also caught that tour in Philly. Did an interview with Aaron Turner that I am very happy with. Will link to it when it runs next week.

Sektarism
Fils de Dieu
(End All Life Productions)

French funeral doom mines the same cacophonous desolation of avant-guitarist Caspar Brötzmann's Massaker. Only two songs punctuated by "Sacrifice," a half hour of menacingly twisting depressive areligious genius. #TwitterLPReview pic.twitter.com/nerippLuuW

also caught Judas Priest again the other night. they pulled out "Electric Eye". I was happy.

going to have to check that Sektarism out later, you've definitely intrigued me

but let me just say before I take a nap: the expanded Saxon reissues rule

Saw that Moon Tooth are shooting a video for a new single, so I'm assuming there's going to be an album announcement relatively soon.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Sunday, 16 September 2018 05:26 (five years ago) link

sektarism p nice stuff - feel like there's a sort of live-room-sound thing going on in weirdo doom right now. like some late jeweled antler collective impact here or something

The new Monstrosity snuck up on me but it's really good! Very melodic but still technical and face punchy

Holy dickballs i love the new Voivod

Somehow I missed that there was a new Mizmor album this year. It's not on their bandcamp but is on spotify. Excited to crack into this.

xp The Wake is sounding really good so far! "The End of Dormancy" is like their take on King Crimson's Red.

Paul Reverse and the rediaRs (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 23 September 2018 11:19 (five years ago) link

bit on the fence between physical/digital purchase for The Wake, anyone wanna try to sway me one way or the other?

summervillain, Tuesday, 25 September 2018 15:04 (five years ago) link

like for instance, I went physical for the Jean Grae/Quelle Christopher album coz I wanted to pore over the detailed credits of every track, but it didn't actually have detailed credits to pore over. I would also like detailed credits for The Wake, and if there's a weird little story like with Hatross, so much the better.

summervillain, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 13:52 (five years ago) link

I got the deluxe CD version, there's a booklet (mostly lyrics and a picture of the band) and a cool but small 9 panel storyboard kind of thing printed in the digipak. Definitely not impressive - the LP comes with a poster that might be the same thing but bigger, which would be cool.

Paul Reverse and the rediaRs (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 27 September 2018 02:36 (five years ago) link

Like effort put into the digipak: 5/10
Effort put into, say, Nothingface: 9/10
