love this

i think there is some commonality with "limerence" although its a more abstract thing, a kind of emotional directness that connects that and this

I keep seeing this guy's name online today.

The two tracks ufo posted are great. Vocals remind me of Menomena.

the whole album is fantastic, there's nothing else that really sounds like this at the moment

cool lil album

really reminds me of dean blunt

nxd, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 08:18 (five years ago) link

yeah its great that someone from that whole scene has made something so pop, like blunt's stuff is often interesting but ultimately impenetrable to me and hard to really enjoy

james ferraro plays keys on lifetime iirc

ufo, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 11:11 (five years ago) link

This reminded me of Chino Amobi more than anything else, like these huge chunks of hyper-compressed noise just being slammed together, but with that whole pop feel as well.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 11:17 (five years ago) link

yeh thought paradiso at times too

nxd, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 11:27 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I definitely thought of Chino Amobi as well, but I liked Paradiso a wee bit better on account of its more pronounced experimental streak. What Safe in the Hands of Love lacks is a singing voice to match YT's pop aspirations.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 11:33 (five years ago) link

A pop version of Paradiso is kinda exactly what I needed while waiting for a followup to Paradiso :) Love this album.

Yves Tumour once stood on my foot in a German nightclub, but this is good enough that I will forgive that

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 20:25 (five years ago) link

Idk I think the vocals are perfect! Wracked and messed up, more polish would ruin it

This album is the best thing on Warp in ages but I'm not sure if I like it better than Serpent Music.

paolo, Monday, 22 October 2018 16:20 (five years ago) link

For some reason I can't find the right volume for this album, it always seems either a bit too loud or a bit too quiet for me :/

paolo, Monday, 22 October 2018 16:22 (five years ago) link

It needs to be loud and overdriven I think, extreme compression is a deliberate part of the aesthetic and playing it quietly just doesn't work.

Matt DC, Monday, 22 October 2018 18:17 (five years ago) link

this album is so fucking good

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 October 2018 23:44 (five years ago) link

this is really different from Serpent Music and Experiencing the Deposit of Faith! I guess it doesn't surprise me given how wide open his sound has always been, just interesting that he decided to take it in this direction. Can see the comparison to Paradiso. Some of his chants in this also remind me of Lil Peep. I like the close-mic'ed quality of the instrumental aspects of the recording, agree it feels like it should be played loud. Right now this is one of my favorite records

it's not bad but i feel a little underwhelmed compared to the last one

ufo, Monday, 6 April 2020 08:15 (four years ago) link

I need to give this another go, ideally on headphones. It was enjoyable enough but it felt reverent and pastichey and the vocals weren't strong enough to make it really compelling.

Matt DC, Monday, 6 April 2020 09:04 (four years ago) link

yeah that's about i feel. there's still some decent stuff on there but it trails off towards the end and it's strange that he's gone from something that felt much more singular to this sort of pastichey approach.

ufo, Monday, 6 April 2020 09:41 (four years ago) link

on stage with all the hair and theatrics I was more into this, the vocals start to wear more on the record but the songwriting is there imo

Re-discovered Safe In The Hands Of Love again this week. Forgotten how great and interesting it was. Just ordered the 2020 record and am now a bit dismayed to see here the lack of love for it. Oh well. I'll make my own mind up. Did anyone find some appreciation for the new one - is it that different?

nxd, Monday, 30 November 2020 15:49 (three years ago) link

I need to revisit the newest one, I remember being a little letdown. It was okay, but I missed the wild, unexpected detours that popped up on Safe in the Hands of Love.

I gave the new one a close listen last night and I'm still not seeing this as any sort of improvement over Safe in the Hands of Love and I'm surprised to see it landing high on a number of lists. I don't dislike it, by any means, but it lacks SitHoL's range and left-turn detours. It focuses in on and amplifies the alt-rock threads from that album, but I don't feel like it really improves them at all. I don't know, I just miss the more... playful approach he used to have.

Heaven's poll appearance the other day got me thinking about it again, and I guess why I've found some of the reactions confusing is because it's especially in the context of the last album that I love it so much. The thread it follows out of its predecessor is for me not so much musical as thematic, in that it seems to achieve the sort of insulation that Safe in the Hands of Love longed for in its title and most vulnerable moments. “Can I take you home?” keeps echoing, with feedback reply now album-wide. There's a very audience-of-one feeling, heightened by all the terms of endearment, that puts the music at odds with whatever genre it might be pulling from.

moving even further towards a more straight-forward rock frontman thing, it's ok but i'm not really sold on this as a direction for them idk it doesn't have what made safe in the hands of love so great

ufo, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 15:37 (two years ago) link

i'm open to the idea of really getting into a star power version of their work but so far for how radical their ambient stuff + 'safe in the hands of love' is, how good it is, this stuff feels kind of tepid by comparison...feel like the emotions suddenly got cloudy even as it got ostensibly more accessible

i like the idea of pop yves tumor but so far it feels more like downtempo yves tumor

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 20:10 (two years ago) link

yeah it's not bad or anything it's just like... they surely should be able to do so much better?

ufo, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 20:12 (two years ago) link

it feels like they're developing a lot of other underdeveloped parts of 'playing the part' and maybe dont have total command yet. hopefully will get to that zone though

Not feeling as blown away with this EP as I was with Heaven to a Tortured Mind, which ended up being my favourite album of last year. Hopefully it'll grow on me, but I don't really see it happening for a little while.

Yeah I like this a fair bit. Can't lie I've been a little bit disappointed with each successive release since Hands of Love was my fav album of 2018. But I'm hoping for great things.

It will be produced by Noah Goldstein, who has worked with the likes of Frank Ocean, Rosalía, Drake and Rihanna, and mixed by GRAMMY award-winning Brit Alan Moulder — who has worked on albums for the likes of Moby, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Gary Numan, and a number of iconic rock bands.

(A very random pick-n-mix of Moulder artists there)

Same. imo an improvement on The Asymptotical World. My favourites so far are The first two songs, In Spite of War and Purified by the Fire.

I do sort of miss the, ahem, more open-ended (trying not to say noisy/formless) material they used to run far with. SITHOL is still probably my favourite album of the last five years and it still feels like the best showcase for all of their strengths, but I've really enjoyed their popstar poses ever since. They do it really good and the music often matches.
