So I agree that we should be more welcoming of different opinions, but I think the forum question is more about accommodating people who feel overwhelmed by politics in general, and would like a break from dealing with these threads constantly being at the top of SNA.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 9 September 2018 19:50 (five years ago) link

Never saw anyone nitpick this much when the other boards were first created

Convenient eh

a break from dealing with these threads constantly being at the top of SNA.

I am really unsympathetic to the notion that this creates some kind of genuine unavoidable psychological/emotional hardship

Voted no

I don't exactly get it either, but I take other posters complaints at face value unless given a good reason not to.

I voted yes without really giving it any thought. If you had a specific political board, maybe people would be more inclined to start a thread on, I don't know, Edmund Muskie. But Trump has been so exhausting--I don't post very often on the Trump threads anymore--I don't have any strong feelings on the issue.

All joking aside, there seems to be a non-trivial amount of no voters whose argument is "the quality of discussion on politics threads is horrible, so let's make sure they are perpetually at the top of ILE".

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 9 September 2018 22:31 (five years ago) link

Of all the possible outcomes to this poll/question, that must be the most far-fetched. I wonder how you came to this conclusion at all.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 9 September 2018 22:37 (five years ago) link

voted yes as part of a social experiment but bizarro gazzarra is right, politics spill into everything. would you put the us open thread there? maybe we need a "politics" tag like a "NSFW" tag you could put on threads to help people avoid those threads (joeks tag)

the late great, Sunday, 9 September 2018 22:38 (five years ago) link

Well, I'm genuinely surprised that there are so many strong no votes, did not expect that given that so many people seem bothered by the persistence of politics threads

xp

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 9 September 2018 22:40 (five years ago) link

no need for a politics tag as long as we can see user names on sna

I spend half of half of my time having nervous breakdowns and worrying about surviving under the most (arguably) far-right Tory government we've had in the last century. And then realising how lucky I am because I have one terminally ill and one severely disabled in my house, and they haven't worked out how to murder us yet! But no matter what happens I will hate these people and their apologists forever, even if I win the lottery tomorrow.

have one main ILE board and an option to tag subcategories on threads - film, games, books, politics, etc. then people can filter 'em but they're all still in a big list so people can see and comment
