I made the mistake of wearing the ordinary nmf this past summer, like, during the high humidity in France. Holy crap did I really notice all the moisture that it drew to my skin. I was having to blot constantly.

This is the facial cleanser I like to use but it's not really relevant for you guys unless you wear makeup. When I travel, I get lazy and end up using bar soap a lot for my face. I really notice the difference after a couple of days. I typically think my skin is fine (thank you asian genes) but yeah, use cleanser for your skin type and moisturize like crazy when you can. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01D2M4I46/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

just1n3, I'll report back about the face sunscreen. I actually don't wear it often (I know I should) because it's too heavy and Iprefer to dodge into the shadows while I walk. But I feel like sunscreen marketed towards korean and japanese clients is the way to go.

Sorry to post yet another Sali Hughes link, but if you haven’t tried any of the sunscreens in her recent column they’ll be worth a shot because she’s rarely wrong.

Oh she mentions the biore watery essence too! I think i saw mentioned somewhere else that it is more gel like?

Yerac, Monday, 17 September 2018 11:25 (five years ago) link

I had good success with the Neutrogena water gel moisturizer over the past year, so bought the SPF 30 water gel sunscreen when I was in Phoenix a few weeks ago. I normally use mineral sunscreen (Coola and TiZo 2 typically though in a pinch I slap some Vanicream on that I normally only use non-face), and this one is chemical, but I really want it to not break me out because the texture is something I can stand to have on my face all day every day. And that is just not the case with the mineral ones.

Jaq, Monday, 17 September 2018 16:06 (five years ago) link

Y'll are making me wonder if my Mary Kay cleanser/washcloth/Neutrogena regimen is insufficient for maintaining radiance through the decades.

Jaq, can you tell us if that Vanicream doesn't break you out? I'm interested.

Sorry I mis-read--the Neutrogena water gel SPF 30--lmk how it goes?

Wish I could edit my own post--I don't use Neutrogena, I use Aveeno body lotion on my face. So far it's the only thing I can find that doesn't cause me pain/rash.

in orbit, have you tried first aid beauty? F has bad eczema that he needs steroid creams for, and he actually like first aid... If I end up seeing you in the next month I will bring a small sample.

Yerac, Monday, 17 September 2018 17:41 (five years ago) link

Will let you know, in orbit - something is currently breaking me out, but I think it's overuse of alpha/beta chemical peels. I'm letting things calm down before I start up with the water gel sunscreen again.

I expected that deciem order to take forever to get here, but it's already here. So quick. Maybe they got their shit together.

Yerac, Thursday, 20 September 2018 00:43 (five years ago) link

yes, my most recent order came in two days and i got texts telling me it would be there tomorrow then another text with an hour delivery window on the morning of the day itself.

three weeks pass...

btw, the Neutrogena water gel spf 30 sunscreen has totally broken me out so it's back to Coola and TiZO2

Jaq, Friday, 12 October 2018 00:01 (five years ago) link

Took all of your advice upthread. I only wash my face once daily. My skin looks ... noticeably younger, which is to say that I look my actual age, as opposed to late 40s.

In other news, Mrs. Bean won a sweepstakes she didn't know she'd entered. The prize was $400 of Korean skin products. We've got enough snail mucin to coat our entire bodies, should the need arise. And facemasks...

Also, Jaq, I had the same experience w. the Neutrogena this summer. My chin got extra angry with me. I switched to the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 30, which seems to've done the trick. Coincidentally, I'm broke.

https://globalnews.ca/news/4541287/deciem-estee-lauder-brandon-truaxe/

TORONTO – The founder of Deciem, the self-professed “Abnormal Beauty Company,” saw his reign at the Toronto cosmetics brand come to an unusual end on Friday.

Brandon Truaxe was ousted from his role as the company’s chief executive and board member on an interim basis after a judge approved an Ontario court application from Estee Lauder Companies Inc., which holds a one-third stake in Deciem.

In its application, Estee Lauder said its fight to oust Truaxe was fuelled by hundreds of “outrageous, disturbing, defamatory, and/or offensive posts” he made on Deciem’s social media pages over the last year that “harmed” the business and its reputation.

“He has essentially lit the company on fire,” he told a judge. “Maybe he was once a diabolical marketing genius building the brand…but he’s gone too far.”

Whoaho! I haven’t been paying attention to him (bc i can’t deal with twitter?) but tbh all I want is my retinoid in squalane solution, ha. Now I’m worried if Estée takes over then the company might not technically be based in Canada? and I won’t have access to products without paying huge duties, shipping, etc. The woes of trying to online shop as a Canadian are real!!

Washing your face once a day is a skin game changer, yes!
Rinsing your face as soon as you wake up and not lingering over breakfast and coffee and whatever is also a skin game changer! Not sure why it took me this long to figure that one out...

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 12 October 2018 23:47 (five years ago) link

it will still be based in canada afaict. it's all very sad, really. the guy needs help asap. the "defmatory" instagram posts have gone now (i don't know why i put defamatory in "" because they were clearly so) and the final video insta-post seemed to suggest that he was in the grip of some kind of alt-right delusion.

FRE SHA VAC ADO (jed_), Saturday, 13 October 2018 00:16 (five years ago) link

have to say that deciem/ordinary/hylamide products have changed my skin very notably so i'm strangely invested in him and in his recovery. it seems like a performative stunt (or series of) that got out of hand or took on its own life. it seemed like a joke but it became a very bad and dark joke.

I know this is hugely First World Problems but I got a birch box subscription for my birthday and due to having two kids and a load of other stress I haven't had a chance to try out hardly any of it! I just want to put on a sheet mask and listen to the Mitski album which I also got months ago but can't listen to with child around because it has a swear in it.

anyone getting a beauty advent calendar?

I've been using The Ordinary retinoids but I really have to monitor it. It makes around my mouth so dry.

Yerac, Friday, 21 December 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

As soon as winter happened last month I had to quit using active ingredients including the ordinary stuff bc my skin decided it was eczema time. Everything is ok now though but I’m still wary.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 22 December 2018 01:25 (five years ago) link

That’s interesting that retinoids make your mouth dry!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 22 December 2018 01:25 (five years ago) link

Oh hi I turned 45 today and my cheeks are melting into my nevk! Not very wrinkly, though. Thanks to decades of breakouts I’ve used retinols for decades!

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Saturday, 22 December 2018 03:01 (five years ago) link

xpost, it's the corners of mouth for maybe a half inch out that are crazy dry.

Yerac, Saturday, 22 December 2018 03:03 (five years ago) link

i have a spot on the right of my chin that gets super dry when i use retinoids before my period. it seemed weird until i figured it out and now it's how i know the train is coming lol

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Saturday, 22 December 2018 17:10 (five years ago) link

omg skin, always changing!
Ah maybe it’s retinoids that have done that to the corners of my mouth too. After not using them for over a month I’ve had no issues in that area, hm, will steer clear of mouth corners in future...

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 22 December 2018 20:43 (five years ago) link

I have issue around the corners of my mouth because I tend to drink a lot of high acid wine and eat spicy/high acid food. And I am also allergic to most lipsticks. But this was a different type of dryness and I know for sure it was the retinoids.

Yerac, Saturday, 22 December 2018 21:20 (five years ago) link

I have no idea what’s going on but since i left the states my skin has been a mess. I’ve veen pretty lucky up until now but it was so bad I went to a private doc to get a prescription for Differin. I really really hope it works because I hate this!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Saturday, 22 December 2018 21:25 (five years ago) link

You are in the UK? It might be the water or just from traveling. I think London has really hard water, it always makes my hair crazy. Where I am in SA, my hair falls out/breaks so much more because the water is so minerally

Yerac, Saturday, 22 December 2018 21:29 (five years ago) link

I was wondering if it was the water! It’s so weird but I’ve never had this many problems before. Hopefully this will sort it out.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Saturday, 22 December 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

My hair looked great while I was in Italy for 2 weeks in October. I think I only needed to wash it twice the whole time I was there.

I’ve been using Huxley sleep mask, a Strategist rec, but I’m not sure it’s doing the amazing things I’d read about. It’s supposed to be super hydrating and help reduce redness/blotchiness.

just1n3, Sunday, 23 December 2018 02:34 (five years ago) link

my hair also looked way better in Italy. it's the soft water; our uk water is dead hard

I just looked at his Instagram and he was posting some very weird stuff in the last couple days. I didn’t follow the whole story very closely but, yes, it seems really not that surprising but very sad. He was 40.

the late great, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 20:17 (five years ago) link

a lot of his recent posts are directed at trump?

maura, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:38 (five years ago) link

from what I can determine re that: Brandon was mentally unstable for a while and had posted a lot of wild conspiracy theory stuff to instagram. A lot of his followers on insta were conspiracy theorists who added fuel to the fire by validating his delusions. His delusions became grander and he started to think, because he had a lot of followers (within a v niche group), that what he was doing was politically important and was connected, somehow, to broader destabilising movements and to Trump. He was also taking a lot of prescribed drugs and unprescribed ones (including alcohol). I'd guess that his death was as a result of a drugs and alcohol overdose but that may be wrong, of course.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:51 (five years ago) link

Perhaps it's not right to speculate. I do feel bad that I read those detailed exposés of the unraveling of the situation with some glee, given what ultimately happened.
