and I also don't understand the motivation or reasoning behind saying something that hostile to a person you like. if I like someone, I... don't say things like that to them? why would I do that? if I feel positively about a person, why would I go out of my way to say something that paints them in a negative light and might make them feel bad? it'd be like going up to someone I supposedly like and punching them.

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:32 (five years ago) link

i don't think it's a good idea to get into a "everyone post examples of times they have encountered unnecessary hostility on ILX" thing, but i'm pretty sure most of us have run into it many, many times. i am a very sensitive person and i have reacted badly to it many times, so i understand where you're coming from.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:33 (five years ago) link

Unperson, I don't get it, you say someone is too sensitive to criticism so your solution is to bait them? Did you think that make things better somehow or did you not care?

Where do y'all find out who's banned? Is there a thread with a list?

this is kind of different, but have you ever run into a group of "friends" who do nothing but shit talk each other constantly? (i think this is also common in some families) like the style of humor and camaraderie they have is to constantly make jokes at the others' expense? but they seem to be buds all the same? i have no fucking clue how that works, and have never been a member of said friend circles because i can't handle getting made fun of constantly, but it is a very common thing. in the same way there is a style of conversing online that includes little jabs that cut sensitive people to the core but are seemingly unnoticeable to others.

[Removed Illegal Link]

Karl Malone, Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:40 (five years ago) link

uh, whoops. the illegal link is just the admin log (found by clicking "Boards" and then the admin log link)

Karl Malone, Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:40 (five years ago) link

KM, this is what I meant by "banter" upthread, feel like this stuff is endemic in the UK

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:43 (five years ago) link

everyone, it's just a message board

there's a newsletter but you got banned from it

Trϵϵship, Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:44 (five years ago) link

haha

wow I've never looked at that, had no idea um certain people were banned or what for (Adam Bruneau?!)

Οὖτις, Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:46 (five years ago) link

again, this seems to go beyond banter into outright hostility. if it was banter it wouldn’t be here

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:46 (five years ago) link

Tuesday, September 11, 2018 10:02 PM Site Le Baton Rose (Turrican) has been banned permanently. 51'd

tbf, the whole point of this thread is to post things into a void that you think would go badly if you said them to people, not to go looking for mean things ppl thought were too harsh to say and guess that they were directed at you

yes, Bruneau asked to be banned

Gibing The Amethyst (sic), Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:49 (five years ago) link

Yes. Step away from the computer

flappy bird, Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:51 (five years ago) link

but it isn’t a void, if you want to post into a void there’s notepad or physical pen and paper. posting something in public means people can and will see it, and it doesn’t mean they can’t be hurt by it

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:52 (five years ago) link

but this is literally ILX's safe space for posts you had second thoughts about but still want to post

flappy bird, Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:54 (five years ago) link

how I generally use this thread, a couple of times a year:

- type something sarky into a thread
- figure that it'll read as cunty to some ppl, rather than just goofing around
- ctrl+a, ctrl+x, ctrl+h, ctrl+v here instead
- close tab without posting

Gibing The Amethyst (sic), Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:55 (five years ago) link

I mean we're all just words + usernames on here. Just don't look itt!

for approximately the sixteen billionth time, these aren’t words and usernames but in many cases people I know personally and in a couple cases work with

when I met Adam Bruneau irl he pretended to not know what ILX was

crüt, Thursday, 20 September 2018 21:59 (five years ago) link

I didn't know that, and also, Damn

flappy bird, Thursday, 20 September 2018 22:00 (five years ago) link

xps so fuck them. they're assholes. you're not. don't allow them to have this power of you. easier said than done, i know.

I had forgotten all about Moo Vaughn until seeing that admin board

Dan S, Thursday, 20 September 2018 22:02 (five years ago) link

whatever purpose this thread serves, it's definitely not to lay on with really personal insults (esp if you supposedly like the person). and it's not a "void" b/c like... we're all ... here.

honestly the conceit of fancying it a free zone for any sort of mean posting seems sorta beneath ilx. "oh sure, I mean, I *wrote* it, and posted it where you could see it... but, see, it was in the Doesn't Count thread, so it's like i *didn't* say it." we might as well just start letting people call "Opposite Day!" after the fact.

|Restore| |Restart| |Quit| (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 20 September 2018 22:02 (five years ago) link

I'd let you buy me a drink.

I think unperson and Adam meant that they'd interact as if ILX didn't exist, which seems reasonable. I have a number of friends whom I've met thanks to ILX and if the board comes up at all it's tangential.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 20 September 2018 22:02 (five years ago) link

ILX can be and certainly has been a little rough and tumble, but it's just about the most cuddly interactive experience I've encountered on the internet. Like when I'm feeling too overly-sensitive to hang here, I know it's time for me to go offline altogether for a bit.

I Don't Have Any Ears, I Am Positive (Old Lunch), Thursday, 20 September 2018 22:02 (five years ago) link

I only know 2 posters here and I knew them before I ever found ILX. different story

flappy bird, Thursday, 20 September 2018 22:02 (five years ago) link

xp to DC
agreed. it's the height of passive-aggressiveness.

Exactly. If you're out in the world and all you can think of to talk about is an internet message board, do you really belong out in the world?

grawlix (unperson), Thursday, 20 September 2018 22:03 (five years ago) link

xposts

it's a void if you don't look at it! I have no idea what conversation was going on elsewhere that made you (accurately) deduce that unperson was talking about you here, but you don't have to look at this thread. if you're actively looking at it to see if anyone's saying unkind things about you, then it would be self-care to avoid it altogether.

unperson is often a total dick, and unapologetic about it as seen ^^, but him taking his dick-posting away from the other conversation is a deliberate attempt to de-escalate, not to provoke.

Gibing The Amethyst (sic), Thursday, 20 September 2018 22:04 (five years ago) link

that's nonsense!

The joy and sorrow of this thread has always been that your controversial comments got if anything more attention than they would on the main thread.

It’s like the real life equivalent of standing up on a table to make your point

Trϵϵship, Thursday, 20 September 2018 22:07 (five years ago) link

it's where you go when you want to escalate something and showcase it, all while maintaining the excuse that you were just trying to de-escalate it by hiding it on a separate thread

xpost

and the table is labeled "not a soapbox"

Karl Malone, Thursday, 20 September 2018 22:09 (five years ago) link

if you want to de-escalate, don't post the mean thing at all. what, the rest of us are supposed to accept that there's an official Cool Kids Thread where everybody's saying mean shit about us, and look it's your OWN FAULT if you go and actually READ it? anyway there are a million *actual* voids you can go vent in if you want to de-escalate. you could do the abe lincoln thing of writing a strongly worded letter and then throw it in the fireplace. or txt your best friend about it. or go for a walk and yell at the ocean. all of these look a lot more like de-escalating to my eyes.
