it’s like a Second Life installation but it’s 100% real

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 01:35 (five years ago) link

Wow that is amazing.

re: The Motherland Calls

The sword was originally made of stainless steel, trimmed with titanium sheets. The huge mass and high windage of the sword, due to its colossal dimensions, caused a strong swinging of the sword under the influence of wind loads, which caused excessive mechanical stress in the place where the hand holding the sword was attached to the body of the sculpture. Deformations in the design of the sword also caused the movement of sheets of titanium plating, creating-pitched sound of thundering metal.

as if it couldn't be more terrifying

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 29 October 2018 19:06 (five years ago) link

exactly. when all the statues come to life, what weapon will he use? in contrast, lady liberty throws her crown and decapitates the enemies of democracy, then uses her torch to burn down their village before reciting from the declaration of independence to any survivors who remain

Karl Malone, Monday, 29 October 2018 19:12 (five years ago) link

He will use the weapon of unity and unite the statues against us

jmm, Monday, 29 October 2018 19:15 (five years ago) link

He looks like an old guy coming out the front door to find the paper boy has thrown the paper into the rose bushes AGAIN.

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 16:05 (five years ago) link

Actual statue in China. 生生不息carved on the platform is a Taoist saying meaning endless change but literally means continuous breeding without break

I think this is a 🐷 breeding center

So it's a bunch of stairs that go interlock with each other to form a basket?

https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2019/03/thomas-heatherwick/

I mean, other places have those too, except there's usually a food court on the ground level.

pplains, Monday, 18 March 2019 01:32 (five years ago) link

Great and somewhat less than respectful piece about it and it's designer Thomas Heatherwick, which manages to use the sentence "Heatherwick is forty-eight, employs nearly two hundred people, and has two children" as a punchline:
