& odd shoes can mean odd shoe heights which makes it harder to walk at the best of times. I think shoe heels even on men's shoes vary quite a bit.
But apparently it looked 'different' enough to be worthwhile for him.

I think my little brother used to do that intentionally for a while in the mid 80s.
Fickle fashion etc.

kinda surprised this has never been a thing

I bought Prince Tronic at my daughter's school jumble sale about 12 years ago for $2, and for whatever reason I think it's a beautiful object. I work in science and have a semi regular need to divide this by that, etc., and to me it's a lot more satisfying to tap the buttons than do yet another thing on my phone. Also being early 80s tech, whenever you ask it to do something challenging like calculate a square root or a log, there is a pause of several seconds and I swear I can hear small noises of effort.

we were watching breaking bad today and a scene with skylar and baby was on screen. B lit up a smoke and i very nearly shouted “don’t smoke in front of the baby!”

That calculator is lovely, yes. Is there a general calculator thread? If not, there should be.

I still use calculators. They're like an app that I can hold in my hand!

Even my son, Sr. Fortnite de la iPad, likes to play on the calculator. Adding 12345678 + 87654321 and getting 99999999 never gets old, I guess.

1-2 times a week, I'll set something aside to bring to work (a book or beverage), get distracted, and be halfway on the commute before I remember it's still on the kitchen counter. When I get home today, there will be a blueberry Odwalla nicely warmed by the sun waiting for me.

Don’t know if it has been mentioned on this thread yet that source memory is the first thing to go, or so they say.

Three times a day I wander around my classroom for four or five minutes trying to locate something I've set down--my clipboard, student work, my coffee, a red pen, etc. Yesterday I left the coffee cup in the supply cupboard. As I look for these things, usually muttering to myself, five students will come up to me in the interim with a question about something; "Hang on," I'll say tersely, as I wave them away before continuing my search.

Spent three minutes a few days ago walking around the class and muttering to myself as I looked for a cup of coffee I had just poured; found it in the supply cupboard with all the paper, pencils, and erasers. Class got a good laugh out of it.

If you do something and post about it here, and then do exactly the same thing and basically write exactly the same post a year later, would that be an example of absent-mindedness?

clemenza, Friday, 16 November 2018 15:24 (five years ago) link

(I believe that's called "meta-absent-mindedness.")

clemenza, Friday, 16 November 2018 15:25 (five years ago) link

I have been absent-minded since I can remember, it's ADHD, not senility.

I find random words and phrases pop out of my head way more often lately (I'm 40).

Last week I was talking to my therapist about eye doctors, and I was like "What's the proper name for the balls in your eyes?" and he was like, "Uh, eyeballs?"

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 16 November 2018 16:00 (five years ago) link

Oh, now you're making it sound gross.

"Haha, you've got a pair of balls stuck in your face."

i opened the first milk doodad & caught myself about to pour the milk in the trash & put empty doodad in coffee instead of vice versa

i must remain vigilant at all times

Had a dream last night that I had to go back to college and I'm blaming that somehow for why I forgot to wear a belt today.

I have this jar of dried chili flakes that I always forget doesn't have a sprinkler bit on the top, it's just open, so several times I've just dumped like quarter of a jar on my/ my kids' food then had to try and scrape it off

Hate it when I forget to wear a belt. No one ever says anything, but man. Might as well be wearing a leotard.

Today I was hanging out laundry - took out a grey tshirt and wondered why I hadn't remembered it was dip-dye/ ombre effect. Considered that perhaps the bottom half had somehow got a bit dryer during the spin section of the cycle with the top half staying wetter (it was quite a small load), but it didn't feel unevenly damp.

Took me a minute or so to remember I was wearing gradient tinted sunglasses 😎
