The fact that they aren't in already and are presumably facing stiff competition from the likes of John Prine and Chaka f-ing Kahn is ridiculous.
I like the Cure but the Cure never sang "Street Player" or "Ain't Nobody" or fuckin' "I'm Every Woman" or, for the love of God, "Tell Me Something Good." One of the most gorgeous pop songs of the last 40 years? Try dance songs that still drive everybody out to the floor thirty-five years after they charted. Prine's a better songwriter than Robert Smith, too, but that's neither here nor there, the point is that Rufus murders everybody else on the list without breaking a sweat, not for nothing was Bruce Swieden mixing those amazing, perfect albums

Morello became part of the nominating committee around 2013-14, and his first act of advocacy was for Kiss. He and Questlove were brought in after Jon Landau et al had done a house cleaning of committee members who were very focused year after year on, say, various doo wop artists who had not been inducted, in favor or younger people: at one time every single younger member was a Rolling Stone staffer. I imagine both are still on the committee, and while his entire public posture is that of an unbending leftist, Morello is a HUGE schmoozer who was and surely still is quite comfortable in the most corporate corners of the music industry. If dave marsh is still on the committee, I'm sure he would advocate for RAtM and would continue to viscerally disdain the likes of the Cure.
I bet Questlove is a big todd stan, as Todd appeared on Fallon a few years ago, and the Roots and Q in particular played the SHIT out of "Couldn't I Just tell you," and so it might be a philly thing. Q played it unmistakably like he had been waiting many years to tear it up with Todd.

some guys are taking the same approach to the rock hall
Van Halen didn’t go into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the first year they were eligible. Does Pearl Jam need to? If Van Halen had to wait — I think they waited like 10 years! As great as Pearl Jam is and as relevant as Pearl Jam is, really, first time, first ballot? No, not in my book, not when you have countless iconic bands still on the sidelines.

I took a bit of a dive into Rundgren's catalog in the past year and while I do like bits here and there the general impression I got was one of fairly off-putting cynicism. might have been the gross way "Slut" is tagged onto the end of all the scatterbrained genre exercises of "Something/Anything" that cemented that impression for me.

Todd said not long ago that he would consider zappa comparisons a compliment. But I look at it as zappa is to G clinton as Todd is to Stevie… and furthermore, as much as he is a smart aleck who tired of doing perfect pop quickly, he would very often invest his shit with a lot of heart, which Zappa refused to or was incapable of doing. Throughout his 50 plus year career, when he did power-pop, soul or what have you, he was not saying "fuck everything but Edgar Varese and Johnny guitar watson, I'm going to make a quick buck off this crap, and improve it with with Steve vai and my Carl stallings interludes." rather he was wanted to be sincere at least, oh, 50% of the time.
I watched that todd/roots thing the day after it was on, by whatever means NBC wanted Fallon shit to be watched on the innuhnet. Is it not on Hulu?
I'm sure I've linked to this site before, but its pretty much the best RRHoF watchdog thing that exists. http://www.futurerocklegends.com/… the guy who does it used to have a URL with some combination of "RRHoF" but he was threatened by Hall lawyers and changed it to be much more vague and innocuous. I checked it this morning and learned of this this podcast "who cares about the rock hall" podcast therein. I am listening to an episode where to hosts talk to Roy trakin (who once called me "boychik")who discusses being part of the nominating committee. No real good dirt yet…

My favorite RRHoF story involves a stone/cement mason hired to do some work around John Mellencamp's pool, in the early 2000s. The deck around the pool was all smashed up, and the mason asked what had happened. It turns out that when John learned he wasn't going to be inducted in the HoF in his first year of eligibility, he took a jackhammer to the deck in a fit of rage.

They all seem pretty consequential to me (though I'm not familiar with a few of the early guys, or backing bands inducted on their own, like the Blue Caps and Famous Flames).

it's not as if they induct artists of actually no consequence, but considering who they could've inducted and who they haven't inducted, dire straits and ringo starr seem highly questionable, and maybe jackson browne and tom waits should leave the museum and get back in line, out of respect for those they jumped in front of.

by RHOF standards she qualifies: more than enough solo hits, distinctive enough from her full time gig. Influential? Undoubtedly. Whether the influenced distinguish Nicks solo from FM is another question.

I must have looked away during Stevie Nicks's solo career. I like "Edge of Seventeen" and the song she did with Tom Petty. I know nothing else.
My list of people who warrant induction twice would be very small. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Neil Young, Lou Reed, and probably Eric Clapton (for the Yardbirds and Cream, not necessarily for his own albums, although I guess Layla counts as an Eric Clapton record). I've probably forgotten somebody. When Beyonce and Justin Timberlake go in twice, I'll be happily dead.

fwiw, ringo got in with the hall's "Award for Musical Excellence," which according to wikipedia, "honors those musicians, producers and others who have spent their careers out of the spotlight working with major artists on various parts of their recording and live careers." other winners include leon russell, glyn johns, etc. he's not technically in the hall as a solo performer.
