My order arrived! Perhaps things are clicking along OK after all?

I know this is hugely First World Problems but I got a birch box subscription for my birthday and due to having two kids and a load of other stress I haven't had a chance to try out hardly any of it! I just want to put on a sheet mask and listen to the Mitski album which I also got months ago but can't listen to with child around because it has a swear in it.

anyone getting a beauty advent calendar?

I've been using The Ordinary retinoids but I really have to monitor it. It makes around my mouth so dry.

Yerac, Friday, 21 December 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

As soon as winter happened last month I had to quit using active ingredients including the ordinary stuff bc my skin decided it was eczema time. Everything is ok now though but I’m still wary.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 22 December 2018 01:25 (five years ago) link

That’s interesting that retinoids make your mouth dry!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 22 December 2018 01:25 (five years ago) link

Oh hi I turned 45 today and my cheeks are melting into my nevk! Not very wrinkly, though. Thanks to decades of breakouts I’ve used retinols for decades!

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Saturday, 22 December 2018 03:01 (five years ago) link

xpost, it's the corners of mouth for maybe a half inch out that are crazy dry.

Yerac, Saturday, 22 December 2018 03:03 (five years ago) link

i have a spot on the right of my chin that gets super dry when i use retinoids before my period. it seemed weird until i figured it out and now it's how i know the train is coming lol

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Saturday, 22 December 2018 17:10 (five years ago) link

omg skin, always changing!
Ah maybe it’s retinoids that have done that to the corners of my mouth too. After not using them for over a month I’ve had no issues in that area, hm, will steer clear of mouth corners in future...

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 22 December 2018 20:43 (five years ago) link

I have issue around the corners of my mouth because I tend to drink a lot of high acid wine and eat spicy/high acid food. And I am also allergic to most lipsticks. But this was a different type of dryness and I know for sure it was the retinoids.

Yerac, Saturday, 22 December 2018 21:20 (five years ago) link

I have no idea what’s going on but since i left the states my skin has been a mess. I’ve veen pretty lucky up until now but it was so bad I went to a private doc to get a prescription for Differin. I really really hope it works because I hate this!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Saturday, 22 December 2018 21:25 (five years ago) link

You are in the UK? It might be the water or just from traveling. I think London has really hard water, it always makes my hair crazy. Where I am in SA, my hair falls out/breaks so much more because the water is so minerally

Yerac, Saturday, 22 December 2018 21:29 (five years ago) link

I was wondering if it was the water! It’s so weird but I’ve never had this many problems before. Hopefully this will sort it out.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Saturday, 22 December 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

My hair looked great while I was in Italy for 2 weeks in October. I think I only needed to wash it twice the whole time I was there.

I’ve been using Huxley sleep mask, a Strategist rec, but I’m not sure it’s doing the amazing things I’d read about. It’s supposed to be super hydrating and help reduce redness/blotchiness.

just1n3, Sunday, 23 December 2018 02:34 (five years ago) link

my hair also looked way better in Italy. it's the soft water; our uk water is dead hard

tokyo rosemary, Monday, 21 January 2019 19:27 (five years ago) link

that's sad. my partner just bought some of that "the ordinary" stuff yesterday

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 21 January 2019 19:27 (five years ago) link

I just looked at his Instagram and he was posting some very weird stuff in the last couple days. I didn’t follow the whole story very closely but, yes, it seems really not that surprising but very sad. He was 40.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 21 January 2019 19:30 (five years ago) link

wow, that's incredibly sad and shocking. such a troubled last year he had.

he had been posting weird stuff forever!

the late great, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 20:17 (five years ago) link

a lot of his recent posts are directed at trump?

maura, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:38 (five years ago) link

from what I can determine re that: Brandon was mentally unstable for a while and had posted a lot of wild conspiracy theory stuff to instagram. A lot of his followers on insta were conspiracy theorists who added fuel to the fire by validating his delusions. His delusions became grander and he started to think, because he had a lot of followers (within a v niche group), that what he was doing was politically important and was connected, somehow, to broader destabilising movements and to Trump. He was also taking a lot of prescribed drugs and unprescribed ones (including alcohol). I'd guess that his death was as a result of a drugs and alcohol overdose but that may be wrong, of course.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:51 (five years ago) link

Perhaps it's not right to speculate. I do feel bad that I read those detailed exposés of the unraveling of the situation with some glee, given what ultimately happened.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:56 (five years ago) link

i don't know if it's right or not but as soon as i saw the headline i knew it was him

the late great, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:58 (five years ago) link

the thing I missed out in that summary was that Deciem had grown by being anti-establishment but the establishment was the beauty industry. Somehow in gaining so many followers so quickly his delusions took over and his desire to expose the established skincare companies became akin to broader political aims, in his mind. It's really a huge shame.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 02:12 (five years ago) link

which, essentially, you can boil down to *cocaine is a hell of a drug*

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 02:13 (five years ago) link

I think I should start using a daily SPF moisturizer for my face, yes? here is my criteria:

* I have normal skin, it is not particularly oily or dry, it will be maintenance and not restorative so I don't need something like intense therapy extreme moisture to repair super dry skin
* it must be fragrance free bcz I hate smelling like things
* I want it to be as smooth weightless invisible as possible
* ideally it would be a mid-range brand like something from a drugstore or even Kiehl's or Jack Black, like I'd like to spend $10-30 on this? But certainly not more
* how much SPF?? I'm under the impression lower SPF = smoother lighter more weightless product but I have also read that you need a minimum of SPF 30 or there's really no point

Brands I am considering are Kiehl's, Neutrogena, La Roche-Posay, uhhhh I really have no idea what I'm doing. The problem is that these are all so expensive and I can't find trial sizes and I'm so reluctant to spending $20 so I can try something and then hate it

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:08 (five years ago) link

welcome to the world of skincare :-/

i use EltaMD UV Daily Facial Sunscreen Broad-Spectrum SPF 40, 1. 7 oz <-- just google those words. it's under $30, fragrance free, recommended by my dermatologist and doesn't sting.
idk if that is what you are looking for but that's what i use and it fits your requirements without making you go to a store if you don't want to. maybe you like going to the store, i find it easier to just order it.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:18 (five years ago) link

or is this like trying to use 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner and I really just need to get a quality moisturizer PLUS a quality sunscreen??? agahoighdklhga

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:20 (five years ago) link

I guess my goal is, like, keep my skin looking decent for as long as possible, while it's still in OK condition. The more I read about SPF -- it's worthless in a moisturizer and must be a separate product, you have to apply an insane amount for it to work, you must reapply every 2 hours, etc -- just makes me, like, why bother if I'm indoors pretty much all day?

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:26 (five years ago) link

I still need to try that Biore water essence spf 50 that they only sell in japan (but can be found on amazon). I am very, very bad about wearing spf everyday because I hate the weight of it. I did really like Peter Thomas Roth sheer spf but it's pricey.

Yerac, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:31 (five years ago) link

Stevie try a Korean brand (and use a separate spf and moisturizer - the coverage is unreliable when it’s apllied in a moisturizer) like CosRx or Biore (you can find them on amazon). Alternatively, go to a Sephora and ask for samples.

just1n3, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:33 (five years ago) link

we all have the same goal!
i use cerave regular moisturizer (that i get at target or wherever) and that abovementioned sunscreen
you kinda have to figure out what works for you. it takes a little effort.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:33 (five years ago) link

Forget the 2 hr thing - no one is doing that unless they’re at the beach

Yerac you’ll like the biore - like the cosrx, it’s ectre light and non greasy

just1n3, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link

Ectre? I don’t know what I was trying to type there

just1n3, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:37 (five years ago) link

I don't know CosRx. I will check it out!

Yerac, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

has anyone tried the Neutrogena Hydro Boost?

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:46 (five years ago) link

also I am so baffled by how aggressively odd skincare/moisturizer branding is, like deliberately awkward grammar and made up words and weird-ass bottles and and and

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:48 (five years ago) link

Truvée Journique The Glistening Black Watermilk Gellé Salve

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:53 (five years ago) link

I use Avene Hydrance Optimale, the 'light' versionversion. It's spf20 and fine as a non-heavy base for makeup

kinder, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 23:54 (five years ago) link

I've tried the Hydro Boost sunscreen and liked the texture very much, but I react too much to chemical sunscreens so it broke me out like mad. I had to go back to TiZO2 and Coola mineral sunscreens.

Jaq, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 23:58 (five years ago) link

stevie you could have a look at which oils are natural sunscreen's - for e.g. wheatgerm oil is naturally spf 20 - however I don't know if that oil is shiny or quite matt (some are one and some the other) - i think that maybe only works if you are only using an oil though.

Khiels ultra facial moisturiser with spf (15, i think) is good but iirc, someone upthread thought it was only suitable for certain climates/humidities etc. It's squalane based, which i like.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 00:13 (five years ago) link

I'll never learn how to spell Kiehl's.
