splatoon is so simple but also frustrating. Rocket League seems like a winner. My 3 year old loves to truck around in open practice mode.

nxd, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 14:50 (five years ago) link

Holy crap the luncheon level on SMO is frustrating

But great obviouslty

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 22:55 (five years ago) link

Most folks playing multiplayer Splatoon are at the level of your 8yo tbf - it’s fun!

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 22:57 (five years ago) link

Me and my kids thought we'd gotten pretty good at Mario Tennis (finished adventure mode, etc.) until we went online last week and got completely destroyed. Oof.

DJI, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 23:25 (five years ago) link

yeah that game is cutthroat online, was too much for me

ciderpress, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 00:33 (five years ago) link

Thanks to having 4 player teams and crazy weapon options, Splatoon never feels punitive. Any loss can be dealt with by choosing a different weapon or joining a better team. My kid likes finding glitches that let her jump on top of un-inkable space

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 03:21 (five years ago) link

valkyria chronicles 1 just appeared on the eshop for 20 bucks, that's going directly into my $20-and-under recommendations list

ciderpress, Thursday, 18 October 2018 03:42 (five years ago) link

I got the Hori d-pad joycon and recommend the hell out of it. Too bad it’s missing HD Rumble but if you play 2d stuff it’s a worthwhile trade off.

Also fuck I love Dead Cells.

The Troops™ (jamescobo), Sunday, 21 October 2018 02:24 (five years ago) link

are we all gonna be gettin' Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Maybe a good game to try to get some ILG online play going for when it comes out?

Only 6 and a half weeks!

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Monday, 22 October 2018 23:20 (five years ago) link

yeah i still haven't started up my online service subscription but that'll be when i do it

hope the smash online play is decent, never a sure thing with fighting games especially on a system where almost everyone is on wifi

ciderpress, Monday, 22 October 2018 23:26 (five years ago) link

Smash will always be better on the couch but my sister and I will both have this one so probably (hopefully) we'll at least play against each other somewhat regularly

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Monday, 22 October 2018 23:35 (five years ago) link

i'm hoping character unlocking is quick enough that i can have them all ready to go before the holidays when my old high school smash buds are in town

ciderpress, Monday, 22 October 2018 23:38 (five years ago) link

aww <3

was also tempted by the new mario party for the same reason but i think mario party 2 was really just lightning in a bottle none of the other old ones ever got played much

ciderpress, Monday, 22 October 2018 23:41 (five years ago) link

The new one is bad tbqph

fgti is for (flamboyant goon tie included), Tuesday, 23 October 2018 03:11 (five years ago) link

really? the reviews were pretty solid

Nhex, Tuesday, 23 October 2018 06:32 (five years ago) link

i liked it, but it's a bit short as it's 20 turns max

super stoked for smash bros

nxd, Tuesday, 23 October 2018 08:22 (five years ago) link

its shortish due to the turn limit, but turns out thats exactly right for groups of usually non game players. we had a great time with it particular the hilarious rhythm game concert spin off bit.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Tuesday, 23 October 2018 08:47 (five years ago) link

playing mario party, cpt toad & inside atm, the plan is smash bros for all of december then hopefully untitled goose game early 2019 :)

nxd, Tuesday, 23 October 2018 09:15 (five years ago) link

wrt Super Mario Party, there are very few play boards and the dice rolling mechanism is slowed down enough to make turns feel like they're lasting twice as long as previous Mario Partys I've played (all N64, never played any since). The concert game is amazing though

Inside is on sale, and VERY GOOD, as mentioned above

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 26 October 2018 12:58 (five years ago) link

Yoku’s Island Express is on sale rn and it is extremely fun

Tune in 11/1 for roughly 40 minutes of new information in the final Super #SmashBrosUltimate #NintendoDirect before the game’s release, hosted by Director Masahiro Sakurai! The Direct will be followed by a post-show Nintendo Treehouse: Live presentation. https://t.co/Y00RdNrBth pic.twitter.com/JSuSUtGk6e

presumably revealing the rest of the roster + the story mode or whatever

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 14:05 (five years ago) link

Yeah and online modes. Stoked for the madness.

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 14:45 (five years ago) link

also the treehouse presentation afterwards will be showing other games incl. Yoshi

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 14:54 (five years ago) link

Is this going to be another 20 minutes just listing Smash characters?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 15:11 (five years ago) link

No it’s going to be another 40 minutes listing Smash characters

Box Theory vs Grinch Theory, it all ends here

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 15:24 (five years ago) link

I’m so incredibly cursed by my desire for this game

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 17:20 (five years ago) link

it's going to take like a month just to audition every character to figure out who's in my crew this time, the roster is approaching dota/LoL size

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:18 (five years ago) link

if you play the squad strike mode you can have a team of all fire emblems

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:20 (five years ago) link

it's most just the boring sword dudes though

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:26 (five years ago) link

splatoon is so simple but also frustrating.

after 2 weeks splatoon has taken over my life and is fantastic

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:33 (five years ago) link

it's so good, i burned out for a while but would like to revisit at some point and actually try the 1p campaign and dlc campaign

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:35 (five years ago) link

it took like 20 hours of play before the gyro controls & squid movement really clicked for me but after that i felt like a god

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:37 (five years ago) link

there's also like...10 new maps and 20 new weapon sets since i last played, yikes

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:38 (five years ago) link

need to poll primary/secondary/special sets

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:40 (five years ago) link

it's crazy how just flipping one of these can end a hot streak and make you shit all over again

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:40 (five years ago) link

regular blaster 4 life imo

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:49 (five years ago) link

luna blaster is fun too but it sucks ass if your team isn't controlling the map

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:49 (five years ago) link

I am extremely terrible with the blaster. I am mostly an N-ZAP fan.

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:57 (five years ago) link

im good with the nzap and splattershot too but they're not as exciting as popping people

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:14 (five years ago) link

ok I've set my alarm to get up for the smash direct, I've been training my whole life for this (to wake up slightly early to watch a marketing video)

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:48 (five years ago) link

Nintendo directs have to be one of the most ingenious marketing plans ever devised

ciderpress, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:57 (five years ago) link

surprised people aren't already sick of them tbh. it definitely doesn't work as well for Microsoft and Sony

Nhex, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 17:55 (five years ago) link

microsoft and sony haven't really tried it, the key is to have them spaced regularly year round rather than just unloading everything at E3

ciderpress, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 18:08 (five years ago) link

also not telling people when they are until the day before is an important ingredient even though (because?) it causes people to go completely insane

ciderpress, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 18:10 (five years ago) link

yeah the frothing madness that sets in among enthusiasts waiting for Directs is pretty key to the experience and probably helps with getting attention on them from the people not waiting as closely. The spacing means that a lot of the Nintendo Directs are the first announcement for one or more first-party games that are plausibly coming out within months or a year. Like, Nintendo could've said "there's going to be a Luigi's Mansion 3" 18+ months ago when it presumably went into production and then said nothing, but instead the first look at the game in the Nintendo Direct was unanticipated, had gameplay in it, and had a plausible release window. (Well, year.) And they generate tons of coverage even without flying the games press to some hotel to play the games because they're dense with trailers and details and things to goof about.
