this season is pretty terrible so far :(

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 October 2018 17:33 (five years ago) link

yessssss it is

rip van wanko, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 17:38 (five years ago) link

agree with that and this

that cajun sketch just made me miss jason sudeikis and maine justice

won't be surprised if both Mckinnon and Cecily Strong leave after this year

akm, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 22:08 (five years ago) link

there's a few talented people trying very hard with terrible material but i haven't found any recent material that's been posted funny. also i think cast members being unable to keep a straight face during sketches is definitely not inherently funny, keep it together and be a pro imo.

omar little, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 22:26 (five years ago) link

and Leslie Jones still can't read the cue cards

flappy bird, Tuesday, 16 October 2018 23:07 (five years ago) link

Yeah like Leslie Jones is a cool person but she's not been particularly strong as a cast member

If they lose Kenan, McKinnon and Strong after this year... good luck

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 00:30 (five years ago) link

Kenan is like Don Pardo at this point, it's hard to imagine the show without him unless he dies

Scam jam, thank you ma’am (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 00:31 (five years ago) link

I was just thinking she’s gotten a lot better.

I also thought last weeks was a pretty decent episode.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 00:46 (five years ago) link

Also I have this belief that Melissa Villasenor is funny but no utilized properly but I have no proof of that

The white dudes except Pete and Kyle kind of blend together like a Tarem Killian king rat

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 01:17 (five years ago) link

and Taram Killem was the funniest one, it's a bummer he was fired two years ago, still have no clue why.

you could say this about any year with a major cast exodus. Heidi Gardner is strong, this is only her second year. not caught up with any players they hired this year.

tim meadows, chris parnell, darrell hammond (although he actually is don pardo now)

flappy bird, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 03:16 (five years ago) link

You *could* say that about any major cast exodus but often there's felt like a bunch of younger players ready to take the mantle

I think the bigger problem is the writer's room, it's terrible this year which makes ppl like Kenan or McKinnon who have a lot of charisma more vital

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 12:37 (five years ago) link

and Aidy! I thought last year was her (and Cecily's) send-off, happy but confused to see them back!

and Taram Killem was the funniest one, it's a bummer he was fired two years ago, still have no clue why.

I thought it was because he went off to direct that movie (not a lorne production iirc) that was gonna make him basically unavailable for an entire season of SNL - and he already had 6 seasons -- most ppl stop at 7 or 8 right? so it figures they'd just cut him loose.

Heidi Gardner is strong, this is only her second year. not caught up with any players they hired this year.

Heidi Gardner is already great, Chris Redd has shown greatness, Ego Nwodim is the only new cast member so far this season and we basically have seen nothing of her but if she's as good on SNL as she has been on e.g. Comedy Bang Bang she'll do super well. Agreed that the writing is brutal tho. Remember when they only thing they couldn't write was an end for a sketch? At least the beginnings and middles were ok :(

vote no on ilxit (Will M.), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 14:53 (five years ago) link

I like Gardner a lot, and Redd has promise...Gardner is tending to shine on the news where you can tell she's kinda up there doing bits that she already had prior to SNL, getting around the writing problem

I guess I'm kinda coming around on Pete Davidson for some reason? Some of his news things are super awkward but they kinda work? I've thought he was pretty much useless and was just around so they had someone who could play teenage dudes in sketches

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 15:08 (five years ago) link

also xpost forgot Aidy, she's always good

the Trump Brothers thing is pretty funny but they are overusing it

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 15:09 (five years ago) link

Alec Baldwin's Trump is definitely one of the worst fucking abominations in the history of comedy

but I guess I feel like we deserve it

but yeah compared to Anthony Atamunuik, it's like yr fucking boss getting blitzed at the office Christmas party

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 15:10 (five years ago) link

i'm still enjoying the trump kids - might be overusing but, critically, i don't think it ever runs overlong, which imo burns me out on update segments more than frequency. i bet by november i'll take that back

I remember when Taran Killam (I had to look it up) was let go (along with Jay Pharaoh) he gave an interview where he sounded confused/sad/disappointed he was let go. didn't know about any movie he directed.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 17:07 (five years ago) link

Anthony Atamunuik

this guy is so fucking good, I wish his show had gotten more love. more love than SNL at least.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 17:10 (five years ago) link

i can't put my finger on what was wrong/off with The President Show, but yeah he was good on it. Maybe ppl are just a little too trumped-out to tune into something called The President Show

it was definitely cold comfort sometimes but otoh I still laugh at that initial clip of him getting excited about driving a truck and then quickly devolving into a super-dark rumination on drowning after crashing it into the bottom of a river

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 17:29 (five years ago) link

Killing Gunther was the movie

apparently he was also in Hamilton at the same time? sounds like dude was just wild busy with non-SNL activities

When asked what happened in this interview--

You sign for seven years, so I had one more year. I had sort of had it in my head I would make this upcoming year my last year, but then heard they weren’t going to pick up my contract. I was never given a reason why, really. I can assume until the cows come home. But I do know I’m directing this movie and I’ll have two months of post-production that would have bled into the SNL production schedule, so we kind of communicated that.

in my mind i remembered this as a lot less "wtf?" and more "oh makes sense," weird.

she isnt. her main #1 go to bit of her stand up is to do racist ass asian voices like it's 1945 or something.

Alec Baldwin's Trump is definitely one of the worst fucking abominations in the history of comedy

it was actually i think a loss when Alec Baldwin abandoned being a solid dramatic leading man w/some comedic chops for turning into a straight-up comedy oaf.

omar little, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 17:36 (five years ago) link

yeah what was Baldwin's last good serious role? was sorta shocked when I watched The Departed last week, forgot he was in it & was good

flappy bird, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 17:40 (five years ago) link

i think The Departed is a pretty great example of his across-the-board talents being used wisely in a supporting role. i don't even want to suggest he's bad at comedy, but it's like how Tom Hanks was an extremely talented natural comedian able to nail pathos and drama when needed, and how it was a loss when he abandoned comedy for dramatic roles (roles in which he is often extremely good, but still...)

omar little, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 17:54 (five years ago) link

yeah I think with Baldwin -- and DeNiro too -- you get the sense they just don't wanna work that hard anymore

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 17:58 (five years ago) link

he was fantastic in 30 Rock. every comedic role/cameo (there are wayyy more of those) he's done since has felt like some variation on Jack Donaghy.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 17:59 (five years ago) link

I suppose Baldwin's career did take a major hit in the '90s, he made some poor choices. The Getaway remake was DOA, the multiplex audiences weren't exactly trampling each other to get into screenings of Heaven's Prisoners...i do remember his role in Malice making some waves but the film itself didn't do anything, it was one of those twisty thrillers trying to sell itself on a single speech from his character (it didn't work as well as Neeson's Taken speech did, let's put it that way.)

omar little, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 18:14 (five years ago) link

turning into a straight-up comedy oaf.

yeah he's gold in 30 Rock but is putting zero effort into SNL these days, and his Mission Impossible character just feels like Donaghy without jokes.

he got furious* when it was reported that Atamaniuk had been asked to audition for SNL as Trump, just so that Michaels had the impression on tape to show Baldwin. obviously he's countered the accusation by no longer doing an actual impression at all, let alone lifting one.

*like, closing his twitter bcz he couldn't stop shrieking abuse furious, and then logging in to his charitable foundation's twitter account to keep shrieking abuse

he even snuck a "Good God!" into Mission Impossible that left me wondering how many times they had to shoot it before he remembered not to say "Lemon" at the end.

idk Jay Pharoah was good at impersonations but wasn't *funny*, imo

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 20:15 (five years ago) link

yeah but he was reaaaally good at impressions

His Stephen A. Smith was fucking legendary imo but I don't know if the people who want a great Stephen A. impression intersects w/ppl who watch SNL

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 17 October 2018 20:38 (five years ago) link

I did not like Will Ferrell, Tracey Morgan or Fred Armisen at all when they were on SNL. I like them 100 xs more in later work.

Yerac, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 20:50 (five years ago) link

I am too lazy to check if I already said this above, but I really dislike Jost and Che as weekend update. some jokes are fine, but they both seem to get off on messing up their deliveries.

Yerac, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 20:51 (five years ago) link

i hate the SNL thing of having some absurd characters spout nonsense (usually not particularly funny tbh, sometimes it gets by a bit bc of the performers) and everyone else's dialogue is just like "what are you saying, that doesn't even make sense" etc. I feel like it's a "thing", though maybe i'm overestimating how frequent it is. like the Driver sketch upthread or the movie talkback one. idk.

agreed - i loathe SNL personally tho but this is a big deterrent for me, very few people can get away with laughing at themselves and actually still be funny - norm for one

Ross, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 21:25 (five years ago) link

golden era SNL casts were always on point and in character, w/rare exceptions. they never cracked up, which is weird because those eras were actually funny...

omar little, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 21:29 (five years ago) link

Jay Pharaoh's Ben Carson impression is the GOAT

omar otm about skits with one character saying something ludicrous and everyone else reacting, that does recur over and over

flappy bird, Thursday, 18 October 2018 03:08 (five years ago) link

i liked the 3 way more after they were on the show, whoops and i meant to say chris parnell and not fred armisen. I have a deep dislike for Che and Jost. Not as much as Mooney though. I do agree with one of the statements above though, some of the other guys blend in together too much that they don't really stand out for me to dislike.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 11:09 (five years ago) link

i got a strange whim to look up all of the "Under Underground Music Festival" skits last night, goddamn they're funny. "play Farmville with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed!" "NBA star Dirk Nowitzki shoots at you with a BB gun in an open field!"

RIP Ass Dan.

evol j, Thursday, 18 October 2018 14:06 (five years ago) link

like the Driver sketch upthread

idk, i think the driver sketch had its own internal logic, which contrasted with the setting of the sketch. and i liked that the response wasn't just "what the fuck is happening," but had villasenor enjoying the hell out of driver's nonsense.
