Kate is def in that Key & Peele vein of people who just have completely mastered this as an artform and craft, which I guess doesn't mean they necessarily has the personal touch of a Wiig or a Farrell or whoever

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 18 October 2018 19:27 (five years ago) link

I feel like I would've liked Farrell more in SNL if he hadn't had that terrible recurring cheerleader character.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 19:29 (five years ago) link

It’s a complete misconception to play Trump as a louder version of his IRL persona, the joke would be to play him as totally competent and soft spoken and thoughtful behind the scenes.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 18 October 2018 19:56 (five years ago) link

mckinnon also seems to have graduated to a stage where she doesn't need to be in that many sketches any more and probalby makes a shit ton of money anyway, while it seems like MIkey Day is in every single thing and kind of continually sucks

akm, Thursday, 18 October 2018 20:08 (five years ago) link

there's a guy named MLKey Day?

President Keyes, Thursday, 18 October 2018 20:09 (five years ago) link

is it consensus that Heidi Gardner is the next big star once McKinnon leaves?

alpine static, Thursday, 18 October 2018 20:17 (five years ago) link

seems to me that she should be

alpine static, Thursday, 18 October 2018 20:17 (five years ago) link

McKinnon’s HRC was great. All the Trump people she’s played - terrible

flappy bird, Thursday, 18 October 2018 20:19 (five years ago) link

Or maybe alex moffat will do something so that people will remember his name ( I just had to look his name up and it didn't even sound familiar).

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 20:20 (five years ago) link

Who?

flappy bird, Thursday, 18 October 2018 20:22 (five years ago) link

Beck Bennett has a weird body

there's a guy named Luke Null that it seems like has never been in a sketch, I just noticed him when they had their Moms on at the end of the show

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 18 October 2018 20:28 (five years ago) link

he's already gone lol no longer in the credits

haha wow xp

the dutiful and the banned (rip van wanko), Thursday, 18 October 2018 20:38 (five years ago) link

yeah I know, I just had no clue what his name was. Total void, besides him playing eric.

Yerac, Thursday, 18 October 2018 20:39 (five years ago) link

this is alex moffat's third season on the show. the only thing i really remember him doing, bar parts in sketches where he has few lines, is a character on weekend update called "guy who just bought a boat"

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 18 October 2018 20:43 (five years ago) link

jesus that late for class sketch....

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 18 October 2018 20:46 (five years ago) link

Oh I remember that guy (Luke Null). He gave me a 21 Jump St. Penhall vibe.

Luke (null)

voodoo chili, Thursday, 18 October 2018 21:08 (five years ago) link

man when you watch Hartman in that Reagan sketch, his timing is so good and his characterization is really on point. the current cast is just lethargic.

omar little, Thursday, 18 October 2018 21:11 (five years ago) link

Current cast and skits are like they rehearsed for something up until the last minute, then everyone lost the scripts and they had to cobble together a show overnight.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 18 October 2018 22:06 (five years ago) link

Basically the SNL equivalent of zombie Simpsons.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 18 October 2018 22:07 (five years ago) link

It's kind of bizarre, since improv comedy has become such an industry-- that SNL continues to pull these non-entities from such a big pool. Like, maybe these guys audition well and just fail to shine in the written sketch format?

President Keyes, Friday, 19 October 2018 13:21 (five years ago) link

There was an interview with Nick Kroll I just saw, where he says that yes, he did at one point audition for SNL, and fellow comedians who didn't make the cut that year included Ellie Kemper and Jordan Peele. So clearly SNL attracts top talent, but that top talent for whatever reason does not always make it to the cast. I wouldn't be shocked if they sometimes come across a really talented person and don't pick them for that reason, worrying that they won't stick around.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 19 October 2018 14:19 (five years ago) link

I kinda doubt they're worried about that tbh

I do think a lot about the fact that Key & Peele got their start as third-stringers on MadTV. auditioning for a sketch comedy show must be a lot like scouting baseball or football, where at best you get it half right and at worst all-time greats like Albert Pujols and Tom Brady get picked in the 13th round

frogbs, Friday, 19 October 2018 14:23 (five years ago) link

I don't think the show is failing to find talent, they're just not giving the talent much to work with. I feel like I could go on forever listing cast members who seemed anywhere from bad to slightly above average when they were on the show but who have absolutely flourished elsewhere: Hader, Will Forte, Sudeikis, Armisen, Chris Parnell, Poehler, Tracy Morgan, Maya Rudolph, Wiig, etc.

evol j, Friday, 19 October 2018 14:30 (five years ago) link

idk some of those people were better than slightly above average on SNL

President Keyes, Friday, 19 October 2018 14:37 (five years ago) link

yeah i mean they went on to "greater things" i guess bc they leveraged their strengths out of snl but imo the wiig/hader/forte/sudeikis years were some of the most watchable years in this show's history. what i wouldn't give to have forte back :(

vote no on ilxit (Will M.), Friday, 19 October 2018 14:43 (five years ago) link

evol's list is insane. poehler wiig rudolph average?? i think he has a point with sudeikis and morgan. hader was brilliant on snl. armisen went on to portlandia yechh

the dutiful and the banned (rip van wanko), Friday, 19 October 2018 14:49 (five years ago) link

yea wasn't Hader leaving SNL seen as a big mistake at the time

what exactly has he done besides that weird movie with LeBron?

that's a very weird way to describe Trainwreck

the roots of the problem with this show are very clearly spelled out by Harry Shearer in his critique of Lorne Michaels. Everything comes down to Michael's idiotic insistence on poor working conditions and his own "rules" for what he thinks works

haha i got a little carried away listing names and forgot my original premise. Wiig was definitely one of the best, if not the best, cast member of the past decade. Rudolph was really good too. I honestly don't remember much of anything from Amy Poehler though maybe it's just that I only think of her as Leslie Knope now.

john goodman, jim carrey and paul reubens (amongst others) auditioned for snl and weren't cast

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Friday, 19 October 2018 18:44 (five years ago) link

I like Shearer's story about how Lorne hired him as a player but told the cast he was just a writer, causing everyone to get annoyed that he kept casting himself in his sketches

President Keyes, Friday, 19 October 2018 18:45 (five years ago) link

Carrey's humor more suited to Mad TV (for what that's worth)

the dutiful and the banned (rip van wanko), Friday, 19 October 2018 18:55 (five years ago) link

in living color you mean?

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Friday, 19 October 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link

Shearer points out all sorts of stupid things that hamper the show - why allow only a couple of days to rehearse anything? why insist on doing it live if improv is forbidden? why force everyone to compete for exposure? etc

Οὖτις, Friday, 19 October 2018 18:58 (five years ago) link

oh yeah ILC xp

the dutiful and the banned (rip van wanko), Friday, 19 October 2018 19:01 (five years ago) link

first year salary at SNL is reportedly $2500/wk, for the 22(?) week run, which is basically subsistence living in NYC. gotta be tons of perks but with Lorne's net worth over $300M that seems cheap imo

the dutiful and the banned (rip van wanko), Friday, 19 October 2018 19:04 (five years ago) link

i mean lorne's a total piece of shit right? i thought that was his "thing"
