luna blaster is fun too but it sucks ass if your team isn't controlling the map

I am extremely terrible with the blaster. I am mostly an N-ZAP fan.

ok I've set my alarm to get up for the smash direct, I've been training my whole life for this (to wake up slightly early to watch a marketing video)

Nintendo directs have to be one of the most ingenious marketing plans ever devised
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 16:57 (five years ago) link
surprised people aren't already sick of them tbh. it definitely doesn't work as well for Microsoft and Sony
― Nhex, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 17:55 (five years ago) link
microsoft and sony haven't really tried it, the key is to have them spaced regularly year round rather than just unloading everything at E3
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 18:08 (five years ago) link
also not telling people when they are until the day before is an important ingredient even though (because?) it causes people to go completely insane
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 31 October 2018 18:10 (five years ago) link
yeah the frothing madness that sets in among enthusiasts waiting for Directs is pretty key to the experience and probably helps with getting attention on them from the people not waiting as closely. The spacing means that a lot of the Nintendo Directs are the first announcement for one or more first-party games that are plausibly coming out within months or a year. Like, Nintendo could've said "there's going to be a Luigi's Mansion 3" 18+ months ago when it presumably went into production and then said nothing, but instead the first look at the game in the Nintendo Direct was unanticipated, had gameplay in it, and had a plausible release window. (Well, year.) And they generate tons of coverage even without flying the games press to some hotel to play the games because they're dense with trailers and details and things to goof about.

I need help with something to buy!
I've finished BOTW, almost finished Inside and Super Mario Odyssey, got bored with Shovel Knight, and too-stuck-to-progress on Celeste and Hollow Knight.
What's this Diablo thing? Am contemplating Donkey Kong or Skyrim.
― Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 5 November 2018 00:01 (five years ago) link
do you have a sense of what types of games you'd like? 2d platformers? adventure games? RPGs? shooters? etc
DKC tropical freeze is very good imo, it's basically just a modernization of the SNES DKC formula so if you liked those you'll like this and vice versa. very lush, overproduced 2d platforming.
i havent played skyrim since 2012 or so, so no idea how its held up. i have a couple friends who missed it the first time around and are playing it now due to wanting another large world game after BotW, would be a little weird to go in that direction though i think.

Prolly old tomatoes for most ppl but if u haven't played hyper light drifter it's a good un
― esby, Monday, 5 November 2018 00:28 (five years ago) link
Thanks HLD looks good!
xpost Basically I want a big expensive-ass-looking game that's fun to play and look at but not punishingly difficult to play. I was thinking Skyrim might be good after BOTW, but you don't think so?
Sort of tempted to get a PS4 for RDR2 and Spider Man but that's a lot of $$$ and there's something so charmless about a PS after spending time with a Switch.
Also sort of tempted to buy a Wii U and get all the Marios and Zeldas. I mean, I'm sure they'll come out for the Switch eventually, but it could be a while.
― Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 5 November 2018 01:06 (five years ago) link
the marios and zeldas will definitely all show up eventually
― ciderpress, Monday, 5 November 2018 01:14 (five years ago) link
xpost Have you played Guacamelee? That looks fun.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 5 November 2018 01:15 (five years ago) link
skyrim would fit that first part i suppose, just know its a very different game from BotW, 'large map' and 'fantasy setting' are really the only things they have in common
donkey kong is more on the difficult side like those other platformers you listed as being stuck on, though maybe not quite that hard
― ciderpress, Monday, 5 November 2018 01:17 (five years ago) link

I'm just playing through Super Mario 3 on the Switch NES emulator. It's amazing, obviously, but how TF did people get through this game without save points?
(I mean, apart from the obvious answer - long boring childhoods with a *lot* of spare time.)

excited to have youtube recommend hundreds of three-hour-long rants from alt-right dipshits on yet another device, thx nintendo

xp the warp whistle, dude! Also, I would not be at all surprised to hear that a lot of people would leave the NES on/on pause and turn off the TV.
I for one am happy to be able to watch Contrapoints on my Switch now.
― a film with a little more emotional balls (zchyrs), Friday, 9 November 2018 13:00 (five years ago) link
Haven't found the whistle! I just wanted to run through all the levels without warping. I played this when I was a kid, but I never had a NES, so I never had time to get past World 2 or so.
Just that some of the later levels are *so* frustrating, I can't imagine having the time/skills/patience/psychopathy to finish the game, let alone if you have to start every level from scratch - there don't seem to be checkpoints?
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 9 November 2018 14:39 (five years ago) link
games back then would have been like an hour long if they weren't difficult enough to trip you up regularly, it was content through challenge rather than content through content
― ciderpress, Friday, 9 November 2018 15:13 (five years ago) link
beating the game was the end goal of days/weeks of practice
