It's particularly nice to hear Patrick shouting again -- on the basis of this year's disappointingly subdued Self-Defense Family record, I was afraid his voice might be shot.

i feel like i'm the only person who has noticed how many bangers are on this year's dashboard confessional album

Mordy, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

it's got a few good songs but is really disjointed idk

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 21:11 (five years ago) link

it's front half heavy but so many good singalongs

Mordy, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 21:13 (five years ago) link

I have to admit that despite (because of?) their intensely one-note grey po-faced approach I've probably listened to the Pianos Become the Teeth album the most of any emo-sector record this year. a lot of stuff didn't connect for one reason or another, I didn't even really get into the Vespucci after all, mainly because Farren bores me as a lyricist/frontperson too much of the time

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 21:20 (five years ago) link

my emo cru-and-adjacent faves this year in no particular order

PbtT

Slow Mass
Foxing
Super Unison

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 21:29 (five years ago) link

i rate foxing and awakebutstillinbed v highly. gonna add boygenius, the dashboard and snail mail.

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 22:08 (five years ago) link

i did forget something which is fiddlehead!!!! put that above john nolan

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 23:50 (five years ago) link

i also forgot coheed, which: the album ended up being kind of monotonous but the individual songs are soooooo good

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 14 November 2018 13:12 (five years ago) link

yeah I listen to my edited version a lot but I had to slash a solid half-hour to make the pacing acceptable

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 14 November 2018 14:15 (five years ago) link

is the new saves the day good!!!!

It grew on me so much. Catch You is one of my most listened-to tracks this year.

I saw DC last night at the first London show in over ten years. I was freaking out for a week in advance and continue to freak out. I saw them once at Glastonbury in 2006 but that wasn't the same kind of experience at all...of all the emo sing-alongs, this was the most wildly exalting. He also played a new song he'd just written which sounded way more like old Dashboard and was pretty great.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link

These emo year-end lists are great! I'll think of mine this weekend and listen to everything I missed

has Turnover been mentioned here? I'm digging it (though they are not new). The intro to this track reminds me of SY's "Brave Men Run" then later I hear GYBE! and The Promise Ring lol. This track is kinda spacey/indie but they are more properly emobarrassing on the LP 'Magnolia' which I keep coming back to

rip van wanko, Friday, 30 November 2018 20:12 (five years ago) link

i love turnover! i never managed get into the most recent record but i liked magnolia and straight-up loved about half of peripheral vision

New Astronoid single is very cute!

That other East Midlands city has developed a really good queerpunk scene, and Kermes definitely need to be on this thread:

They absolutely slay live, seriously go see them if you get a chance.

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:18 (five years ago) link

That's great. Nothing says queerpunk like naming your song after a Maggie Nelson book, lol

imago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:40 (five years ago) link

great song

this year more than ever before, i think, it's clear just how many great records get forgotten or lost in the year-end shuffle

That Culture Abuse is weird. I don't know anything about them but it sounds like a bunch of hardcore dudes gave up hardcore to make a weezer record but forgot to change their bandname. That all sounds like a dis, but it's good dumb fun.

sounds like the drug church record lol, gonna check it out

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 December 2018 15:54 (five years ago) link

it's so not hardcore/punk in the way the the drug church record is. The "hardcore dudes" I'm imagining is mostly just something about his demeanor/delivery, def not the music. Like there's just a vibe I get that reminds me of like H20's softer moments, or like Weston or something.

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 December 2018 15:48 (five years ago) link

well, those two laura stevenson songs are two of her very best, i’m very excited for a whole album to sound like them
