no more netflix on switch after January 19

"Unfortunately, Nintendo will suspend all video streaming services on Wii - including the Netflix Channel - after January 30, 2019"
https://devices.netflix.com/en/game-consoles/wii/

that would mean no more youtube, either, i guess?

Karl Malone, Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:14 (five years ago) link

you mean on wii?

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:23 (five years ago) link

er...yeah. man, i'm not exactly firing on all cylinders today!

honestly sometimes i forget that the wii still exists

Karl Malone, Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:25 (five years ago) link

Ubisoft hasn’t! The new Just Dance came out for it.

i was really into the wii for about a year. then i tried to mod it so i could have every game of all time FOR FREE, and it worked! for about a month. then it stopped working, i tried to fix it and i bricked it. then wii died in my heart.

Karl Malone, Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:35 (five years ago) link

switch doesnt even have netflix since theyre playing chicken with nintendo over who pays for making the app

ciderpress, Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:36 (five years ago) link

Neither of them really has a reason to blink either. There’s no way the few dozen people complaining about it in enthusiast forums are enough of a PR hit to force Nintendo’s hands, and there’s no way the size of the opportunity is enough to force Netflix’s.

how expensive can it be to make the app

||||||||, Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:45 (five years ago) link

Maybe with YouTube arriving (presumably also without any incentive payments from Nintendo) that might put more pressure on Netflix.

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Sunday, 11 November 2018 18:45 (five years ago) link

Software development can be pretty much arbitrarily expensive, and at Netflix’s scale (ugh) it’s probably automatically millions of dollars to hit a new platform. Things like shitty smart TVs are definitely paying Netflix to be on their platform bc without Netflix they’re dramatically less attractive. Netflix isn’t gonna sell any incremental Switches and Nintendo would rather hoard cash than spend it on anything with unclear value to its bottom line.

I do not desire switch netflix

we were at a dr office today that had a wii setup and I played Mario galaxy on it and now I want to play more but I don’t have a wii or a Wii U. I could borrow my moms wii (not U) or theoretically buy a U but I’d rather just wait until they’re rereleased on the switch is there any chance that happens and if not (or not any time soon) what’s the best way to play it?

Mordy, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 15:39 (five years ago) link

fully expect to get a SMG1 + 2 bundle on switch

||||||||, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 15:41 (five years ago) link

I play old mario galaxy on Dolphin on my PC. You can crank up the resolution, AA etc and it looks glorious. The wii remotes connect via Bluetooth and I bought a USB wii bar so I didn't need an old wii around. You can use an xbox controller if you don't want the faff but with galaxy the remotes are u&k.

closed beta (NotEnough), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 15:43 (five years ago) link

I'm sure it'll happen in the next several years but who knows exactly when. there's a ton of backlog for them to bring over and they haven't tipped their hand on what they're gonna do with the GameCube & Wii gens yet, those games aren't in HD so it's not quite as direct a port as the Wii U stuff they've been bringing over

in the meantime there's dolphin if you have a decent pc

ciderpress, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 15:47 (five years ago) link

kinda hoping to get a black friday switch but also realize that anywhere with a black friday switch, i am gonna get beat to the punch because i do not wake up at 6am

you mean the one with free mario kart?

ciderpress, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 17:38 (five years ago) link

that'll probably be available online, possibly before BF

Nhex, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 17:40 (five years ago) link

saw one here in canada at a drugstore where it's the regular price, but it comes with a $125 gift certificate. apparently sometimes they'll apply the gift certif right there but even if not i am there often enough to use it all up

the UI for the NES emulator is really nice... but the games... have not aged well. roll on the SNES selection though

||||||||, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 18:12 (five years ago) link

Mario 3 is still awesome

The rest, ehhh

I wish you could get rid of the “press plus press minus” sign on the emulator

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 21:54 (five years ago) link

mario 3 is better in the all stars / GBA versions, with the updated graphics. although the core gameplay is obviously still solid

does the Switch version of Gradius still have massive slowdown?

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 14 November 2018 22:24 (five years ago) link

xp hope you all enjoy YouTube on Switch. That's my day job (well, people too etc...).

fajita seas, Thursday, 15 November 2018 00:02 (five years ago) link

ooh, did you have execs stonewalling for a Nintendo check? Do you know how that played out?

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 November 2018 01:56 (five years ago) link

xp I definitely don't know anything about business agreements.

But I would love to tell you the story of an early 2000's consumer smartphone that I worked on that literally built a smartphone + Game Boy product that Nintendo scuttled because they didn't want downloadable games. Too bad, was pretty slick.

fajita seas, Thursday, 15 November 2018 02:38 (five years ago) link

lol of course they didn’t.

oh hey if you download the Famicom app from the Japanese eshop you can play the Japanese versions of NES games with whatever account you bought the online with. not that much use yet, but e.g. you can play Famicom Disk System games like Metroid & Zelda with the extra sound channel. neat!

8 year old son wants a Switch for Christmas.

10 year old daughter has now decided she wants one too.

What will we need to avoid massive arguments?

Assume one Switch each would cover it? No extra controllers or anything needed?

And only one copy of each game if we get physical copies? (Nintendo site seems a bit unclear on that one)

Yeah you'll be fine.

No extra controllers or anything needed?

Depends whether you want to join in when they're playing mariokart?

And only one copy of each game if we get physical copies?

Yep, savegames are tied to user accounts on the console so one game will cover as many users as you need.

JimD, Friday, 16 November 2018 12:10 (five years ago) link

Cheers

Seem to be a couple of early BF deals around - £299 gets you the console plus Mario Kart + Just Dance.

As it's still selling shitloads I assume there won't be many better but will probably hang on just in case.

groovypanda, Friday, 16 November 2018 12:35 (five years ago) link

Ha hold on, I misread "Assume one Switch each would cover it?" as "Assume one Switch would cover it?".

JimD, Friday, 16 November 2018 12:41 (five years ago) link

We're thinking one Switch each otherwise they'd be arguing over it when not connected to the TV (only have one TV in house and no wish to get any more).

groovypanda, Friday, 16 November 2018 13:59 (five years ago) link

yeah i might wait on doing the one per kid thing if you think they'll be able to get along sharing / playing 2 player games. couch multiplayer is half the draw of Nintendo systems anyway

ciderpress, Friday, 16 November 2018 14:02 (five years ago) link

i guess it depends on what games they want it for

ciderpress, Friday, 16 November 2018 14:03 (five years ago) link

One switch each seems unnecessary, you can still play multiplayer games even when it's not connected to the tv.

silverfish, Friday, 16 November 2018 14:37 (five years ago) link

If they both want to play long-ass solo games at the same time (e.g. Zelda) I'd resign yourself to getting one each

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 16 November 2018 14:44 (five years ago) link

This is an area where the parental controls end up doing more harm than good. There's a daily screen time limiter in there which would be perfect for this kind of situation if it allowed you to set limits per user, but gah, it's per console only. So instead of "sorry betty, looks like that's your 90 minutes up for today, time for fred to have his turn" you end up with "DAD! FRED USED UP ALL THREE HOURS AND NOW I CAN'T PLAY AT ALL!".

JimD, Friday, 16 November 2018 14:53 (five years ago) link

(I mean obviously the former is still enforcable manually but sheesh, parenting).

JimD, Friday, 16 November 2018 14:54 (five years ago) link

How does that work with Mario Kart? One joy con each or something and the screen stood up?

groovypanda, Friday, 16 November 2018 15:02 (five years ago) link

yes

ciderpress, Friday, 16 November 2018 15:22 (five years ago) link

Do games generally get a black friday price cut? Time for Zelda

badg, Friday, 16 November 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

you could probably find like a 15-20% discount at retail, don't think there's anything official planned

ciderpress, Friday, 16 November 2018 16:57 (five years ago) link

i bought a switch like a month ago and my wife has now asked me two separate times if it's my phone that's in between the joycon controllers

na (NA), Friday, 16 November 2018 17:00 (five years ago) link

Nintendo should make a phone tbh

I have measured out my life in coffee shop loyalty cards (silby), Friday, 16 November 2018 17:20 (five years ago) link

Didn't Danger work on a Nintendo/phone hybrid?
