oh hey if you download the Famicom app from the Japanese eshop you can play the Japanese versions of NES games with whatever account you bought the online with. not that much use yet, but e.g. you can play Famicom Disk System games like Metroid & Zelda with the extra sound channel. neat!

8 year old son wants a Switch for Christmas.

10 year old daughter has now decided she wants one too.

What will we need to avoid massive arguments?

Assume one Switch each would cover it? No extra controllers or anything needed?

And only one copy of each game if we get physical copies? (Nintendo site seems a bit unclear on that one)

groovypanda, Friday, 16 November 2018 09:58 (five years ago) link

But I would love to tell you the story of an early 2000's consumer smartphone that I worked on that literally built a smartphone + Game Boy product that Nintendo scuttled because they didn't want downloadable games. Too bad, was pretty slick.

i'm listening...

Yeah you'll be fine.

No extra controllers or anything needed?

Depends whether you want to join in when they're playing mariokart?

And only one copy of each game if we get physical copies?

Yep, savegames are tied to user accounts on the console so one game will cover as many users as you need.

JimD, Friday, 16 November 2018 12:10 (five years ago) link

Cheers

Seem to be a couple of early BF deals around - £299 gets you the console plus Mario Kart + Just Dance.

As it's still selling shitloads I assume there won't be many better but will probably hang on just in case.

groovypanda, Friday, 16 November 2018 12:35 (five years ago) link

Ha hold on, I misread "Assume one Switch each would cover it?" as "Assume one Switch would cover it?".

JimD, Friday, 16 November 2018 12:41 (five years ago) link

We're thinking one Switch each otherwise they'd be arguing over it when not connected to the TV (only have one TV in house and no wish to get any more).

groovypanda, Friday, 16 November 2018 13:59 (five years ago) link

yeah i might wait on doing the one per kid thing if you think they'll be able to get along sharing / playing 2 player games. couch multiplayer is half the draw of Nintendo systems anyway

ciderpress, Friday, 16 November 2018 14:02 (five years ago) link

i guess it depends on what games they want it for

ciderpress, Friday, 16 November 2018 14:03 (five years ago) link

One switch each seems unnecessary, you can still play multiplayer games even when it's not connected to the tv.

silverfish, Friday, 16 November 2018 14:37 (five years ago) link

If they both want to play long-ass solo games at the same time (e.g. Zelda) I'd resign yourself to getting one each

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 16 November 2018 14:44 (five years ago) link

This is an area where the parental controls end up doing more harm than good. There's a daily screen time limiter in there which would be perfect for this kind of situation if it allowed you to set limits per user, but gah, it's per console only. So instead of "sorry betty, looks like that's your 90 minutes up for today, time for fred to have his turn" you end up with "DAD! FRED USED UP ALL THREE HOURS AND NOW I CAN'T PLAY AT ALL!".

JimD, Friday, 16 November 2018 14:53 (five years ago) link

(I mean obviously the former is still enforcable manually but sheesh, parenting).

JimD, Friday, 16 November 2018 14:54 (five years ago) link

How does that work with Mario Kart? One joy con each or something and the screen stood up?

groovypanda, Friday, 16 November 2018 15:02 (five years ago) link

yes

ciderpress, Friday, 16 November 2018 15:22 (five years ago) link

Do games generally get a black friday price cut? Time for Zelda

badg, Friday, 16 November 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

you could probably find like a 15-20% discount at retail, don't think there's anything official planned

ciderpress, Friday, 16 November 2018 16:57 (five years ago) link

i bought a switch like a month ago and my wife has now asked me two separate times if it's my phone that's in between the joycon controllers

na (NA), Friday, 16 November 2018 17:00 (five years ago) link

Nintendo should make a phone tbh

Didn't Danger work on a Nintendo/phone hybrid?

DJI, Friday, 16 November 2018 17:45 (five years ago) link

Bayonetta 2 is on sale for $40 on BF... it's never gone below that, right? Shame.

Nhex, Friday, 16 November 2018 18:57 (five years ago) link

Nintendo-published games rarely go more than 30% off yeah.

ciderpress, Friday, 16 November 2018 19:08 (five years ago) link

Guess I'll finally bite then

Nhex, Friday, 16 November 2018 21:58 (five years ago) link

its tempting but ive got too much to play already

ciderpress, Friday, 16 November 2018 22:03 (five years ago) link

Didn't Danger work on a Nintendo/phone hybrid?

Yes indeed. It was the Danger Hiptop / T-Mobile Sidekick extended so it could play Gameboy games. Glad someone remembers! I loved working on the Hiptop.

My last job was working for Joe with a bunch of Danger folks.

Amazon seem to have knocked £30 off the price of the Switch

Does anyone know if save files from the new Pokémon are transferable between systems? I know it supports separate save files for different user profiles on the same system, which is a start, but Splatoon 2 doesn’t support save transfers and I don’t want to risk my partner not being able to transfer her save on this too when she’s finally able to get a Switch or her own.

You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Tuesday, 20 November 2018 03:11 (five years ago) link

there's no way to transfer saves between systems currently, other than a full system transfer which is not what you want in this case

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 04:06 (five years ago) link

Are you sure? I've never done it but seems this does the tricK? https://www.imore.com/how-use-nintendo-switch-online-move-game-saves-new-nintendo-switch

rocket league down to $12, i should probably get it right

na (NA), Tuesday, 20 November 2018 16:16 (five years ago) link

Wait really? on Switch?

That sounds more like a PC steam sale price

na (NA), Tuesday, 20 November 2018 16:36 (five years ago) link

it's a $20 game normally

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 17:49 (five years ago) link

Ugh :( Thanks for the link, abcfsk- that's the feature I was hoping was enabled, but wasn't able to search for without the exact terminology without getting a million results for a Pokemon save data editor. And it looks like for some goddamned reason it isn't supported: https://nintendosoup.com/pokemon-lets-go-pikachu-eevee-wont-support-cloud-saves/

I got a new job and want to reward myself with a game. Should I get

Tropical Freeze
Civ 6
Elder Scrolls
Dead Souls

I know they're nothing like each other and none of you have met me before, but PLEASE MAKE THIS DECISION FOR ME

Leaning toward DKTF

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 18:44 (five years ago) link

don't get civ 6

you will stay up all night, "one more turn", and lose the job

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 18:54 (five years ago) link

― ciderpress, Tuesday, November 20, 2018 12:49 PM (one hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Ah, thought it was more like $40

Evan, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

get TF it's great and if you're leaning towards it already you can't go wrong i'd rate them

TF > Civ 6 > DS > ES

which ES is it tho? Skyrim or Online?

Mordy, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 19:10 (five years ago) link

I haven't played Dead Souls but it's pretty similar, difficulty-wise, to Hollow Knight, no?

rob, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 19:26 (five years ago) link

yeah they don't let you do cloud saves for games where you can savescum perfect gear to use online and i guess Pokemon online battles qualifies as that which sucks because i doubt 90% of people even play it online

ciderpress, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 19:28 (five years ago) link

oh no I hadn't realized Civ 6 was out on switch now

Want to give a shoutout to Road Redemption, the best Road Rash clone I’ve ever played which is now available on the eShop. Load times are enraging and I’ve never managed to get past the rooftop levels, but the game is insidiously compelling.

The Troops™ (jamescobo), Wednesday, 21 November 2018 06:32 (five years ago) link

oh man. i haven't heard of road redemption, but i used to looooooooove road rash.

What are the best memory cards to get for the Switch - something like Samsung EVO+ ?

groovypanda, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 09:30 (five years ago) link

Also is 64GB going to cut it or is it better to opt for 128GB?

Can't see the kids downloading many games and assume most of those classic NES games take up very little space.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 09:49 (five years ago) link

Ended up buying both Kong and Souls! COOL. They're being delivered later today.

I forgot I have Civ 5 on my Mac, and never really dug it, so I'm guessing Civ 6 won't change all that, I think...

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 13:25 (five years ago) link

xp sure, amazon has 128gb ones for 20 bucks currently which is a good deal. just avoid offbrands or unreputable sellers for microsd cards as there's a lot of fakes out there

ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 16:08 (five years ago) link

64 is fine if you're mostly buying indie or smaller games digitally, 128 if you're buying a bunch of bigger stuff like zelda xenoblade smash bros which tend to be more in the 12-16gb range each

ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 November 2018 16:11 (five years ago) link

Got a Switch + Mario Kart + Pokemon for £299 yesterday.

Don't seem to be so many deals around today
