My boss has a two-letter Twitter handle. He tries not to get too smug about it.

People with short Twitter names get loads of junk and misdirected @ mentions so it's not such a great thing

i actually don’t get that very much anymore

I'm pretty happy passing along art pics and funny non sequiturs, the rest I can leave. I try to not retweet political stuff anymore.

i just deactivated my account. the site really caters to the bad, dumb bit of my brain and just feeds me rage. it's the first social media thing i ever ended up actively hooked on and I'm going to try and read during the times i would have reached for my phone

Good for you. I actually deleted Twitter from my phone yesterday morning for similar reasons. I'm looking at it as a hiatus rather than a permanent break, but I need to get out of the habit. I'm using Nuzzle to catch up with all the articles that people are tweeting about, without actually seeing the tweets.

I accidentally locked myself out of my twitter account and can't be bothered going through the rigmarole of getting back into it so that's one way to kick it

Twitter & Reddit are both really shitty in general but you can definitely curate it into something good if you follow the right accounts/subs. coincidentally basketball Twitter and basketball Reddit are both awesome

there should be a term for big accounts where 90% of their tweets are them quote tweeting rando haters in their replies? have unfollowed so many otherwise good accounts for this. prob most regrettable is tressie maccotam. most recently celeb chef Kenji Lopez. it's like a mania imo

i think josh marshall said he did it to protect himself from going to war w every hater in his mentions, like he has to me more considered when he embed replies cause all his followers see it, but also it pretty much looks like sicking your followers on someone who made u mad online

i follow 'don't read the replies' so when ppl do this it's like they are forcing the replies into my face

i like her and she's obv really good at twitter (to a v unusual degree for an academic, most of whom are super corny tweeters of Office gif replies) but nah i just checked her feed and she did it 6x in the last 24 hours lol. also imo it's self-care to periodically unfollow high-frequency accounts no matter how quality they are. it like, fucks with your brain to read so many tweets by the same person

bcz if 9 ppl an hour ask you the same question, you can quote-reply one of them and forestall some of the future repeat questions

or if you love the attention, you can be bombarded with questions about your answer

oh lol it is clearly not hardmanning in context of literally discussing doorbell ringing but sure resembles hardmanning out of context

i can see the appeal of setting your followers on some feeb. like imagine for a second that ilx was all conducted on twitter, and you had a massive following, you might be tempted to quote tweet whoever your bête noir is when they reply to you with some nonsense.

it just seems like if you have that kind of platform and reach... maybe use it for something less petty?

my personal preference is that if academics are going to argue all the time on twitter, which I am all for, I’d appreciate if they argued with people who were worth their time, because it might actually lead to some interesting discussion. but that is not how you amass followers and likes and rts and I’m sure they understand that

there are plenty of otherwise interesting accounts Ive just decided to unfollow because I didn’t really feel like I was learning anything other than how to make fun of dumb people

it was fun for a minute but it's long been dead.

i deleted the app from my phone on new year’s. it was just too much negative energy, made even people i’d otherwise like seem small and petty, overconfident in dumb moralisms. and the memes and gifs and takes are all bad
