I'm @critterjams and I RT a lot of good stuff
Twitter & Reddit are both really shitty in general but you can definitely curate it into something good if you follow the right accounts/subs. coincidentally basketball Twitter and basketball Reddit are both awesome

there should be a term for big accounts where 90% of their tweets are them quote tweeting rando haters in their replies? have unfollowed so many otherwise good accounts for this. prob most regrettable is tressie maccotam. most recently celeb chef Kenji Lopez. it's like a mania imo
― flopson, Monday, 17 December 2018 04:12 (five years ago) link
lol yeah I think Al Roker is like that too
― flappy bird, Monday, 17 December 2018 04:15 (five years ago) link
tressiemc is still a good follow! dont think thats a fair description tbh (altho obv thats your prerogative to not read her if the amount she does of this sort is still more than your liking, but idk...)

she does do it a lot
― lag∞n, Monday, 17 December 2018 04:57 (five years ago) link
sometimes you have to call out your haters though!!!!!
― 21st savagery fox (m bison), Monday, 17 December 2018 05:00 (five years ago) link
lord knows i have to do it on ilh every single day
― Clay, Monday, 17 December 2018 05:01 (five years ago) link
i cant come up w a nice reason why these ppl w high follower counts wld do the embedded reply thing instead of just replying like a normal person
― lag∞n, Monday, 17 December 2018 05:02 (five years ago) link
i think josh marshall said he did it to protect himself from going to war w every hater in his mentions, like he has to me more considered when he embed replies cause all his followers see it, but also it pretty much looks like sicking your followers on someone who made u mad online
― lag∞n, Monday, 17 December 2018 05:04 (five years ago) link
i follow 'don't read the replies' so when ppl do this it's like they are forcing the replies into my face

i like her and she's obv really good at twitter (to a v unusual degree for an academic, most of whom are super corny tweeters of Office gif replies) but nah i just checked her feed and she did it 6x in the last 24 hours lol. also imo it's self-care to periodically unfollow high-frequency accounts no matter how quality they are. it like, fucks with your brain to read so many tweets by the same person

bcz if 9 ppl an hour ask you the same question, you can quote-reply one of them and forestall some of the future repeat questions
or if you love the attention, you can be bombarded with questions about your answer
comme ci, comme ca

right now shes in a embedded tweet fight about how she doesnt like millennials texting to tell u theyre there instead of ringing the doorbell which is admittedly kinda funny
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 19:22 (five years ago) link
I have a doorbell. Ring it. https://t.co/eJPTgmxjbm— The Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom (@tressiemcphd) December 19, 2018
twitter hardmanning is the stupidest hardmanning
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 20:47 (five years ago) link
oh lol it is clearly not hardmanning in context of literally discussing doorbell ringing but sure resembles hardmanning out of context
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 20:48 (five years ago) link
i can see the appeal of setting your followers on some feeb. like imagine for a second that ilx was all conducted on twitter, and you had a massive following, you might be tempted to quote tweet whoever your bête noir is when they reply to you with some nonsense.
it just seems like if you have that kind of platform and reach... maybe use it for something less petty?

yeah i like her too, shes a good follow, i even mostly enjoy rubbernecking her embed beefs lol
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 22:14 (five years ago) link
yeah ok scanning her twitter and it's so many embedded beefs, a few is one thing but this just looks pathetic and yes, petty. people on twitter like this are so tedious
― flappy bird, Thursday, 20 December 2018 00:34 (five years ago) link
my personal preference is that if academics are going to argue all the time on twitter, which I am all for, I’d appreciate if they argued with people who were worth their time, because it might actually lead to some interesting discussion. but that is not how you amass followers and likes and rts and I’m sure they understand that
― k3vin k., Thursday, 20 December 2018 05:28 (five years ago) link
there are plenty of otherwise interesting accounts Ive just decided to unfollow because I didn’t really feel like I was learning anything other than how to make fun of dumb people

its so disturbing to look at the replies to some popular tweet and its 75% reaction gifs

i deleted the app from my phone on new year’s. it was just too much negative energy, made even people i’d otherwise like seem small and petty, overconfident in dumb moralisms. and the memes and gifs and takes are all bad

tbh wish I had the courage to delete my account and not just the app on my phone :/
― marcos, Saturday, 5 January 2019 00:23 (five years ago) link
do what I did - set the age on your profile to <13. you'll then have to upload a scan of your passport to unlock your account
this is too much of a faff so I've just left my account locked
― twitter is bad not good (||||||||), Saturday, 5 January 2019 00:43 (five years ago) link
plus you have to go to the trouble of obtaining a fake passport for a child in your own name, which takes fucking forever these days
― Karl Malone, Saturday, 5 January 2019 01:03 (five years ago) link
When you deactivate your account there's a month before it's properly deactivated & deleted forever. Logging in means you're back up and you have to wait another month if you want it gone. Done it many times and never made it to the end of a month.

Please do continue sharing and reminding people in the thread that empathy is important. This isn't about whether screen readers/twitter should be fixed. It's about what the experience of people is really like today and that by using characters like these you're harming people.— Kent C. Dodds (@kentcdodds) January 9, 2019
morality is getting too hard
