this is such a perfect bombastic closer

that's the one where i thought X&Y! so mid-00s tv soundtrack-ish, my fucking heart

austinb, Monday, 26 November 2018 07:00 (five years ago) link

it also reminds me of Shouso Strip

finished the album and it really rules, not sure how it compares with ILWYS yet but certainly on a similar level. only thing is i never want to listen to "the man who married a robot" again lol

ufo, Monday, 26 November 2018 07:01 (five years ago) link

ugghhh I need to hear this

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 07:13 (five years ago) link

"i always wanna die sometimes" is one of those songs where you want the chorus to go a certain place and then it does and fireworks start shooting off in your head

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 November 2018 07:34 (five years ago) link

where is everyone listening to this? i thought it wasn't out until the 30th?

josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 26 November 2018 07:35 (five years ago) link

it also sounds really british to me which i think is cool

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 November 2018 07:37 (five years ago) link

it leaked so nowhere that's legal

ufo, Monday, 26 November 2018 07:46 (five years ago) link

"i like america & america likes me" destroyed me.

Nourry, Monday, 26 November 2018 09:55 (five years ago) link

where is this

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 26 November 2018 10:16 (five years ago) link

God it would be just horrible if this turned up in my inbox

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 10:27 (five years ago) link

"i always wanna die sometimes" is the most beautiful and sad and real song ever?

Nourry, Monday, 26 November 2018 10:31 (five years ago) link

wonder if I'd like this more than the last one

n.b. i liked the last one mostly as it was so mad and sprawling

imago, Monday, 26 November 2018 10:34 (five years ago) link

this one's madder and even broader in sound, though it doesn't really have the same sort of arc to it that ILWYS did

ufo, Monday, 26 November 2018 10:47 (five years ago) link

"let's write every type of ballad we can think of", the album

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 12:27 (five years ago) link

they just did a great cover of "thank u, next" on the radio 1 live lounge but it was very weird to hear someone else sing ariana's very personal lyrics

ufo, Monday, 26 November 2018 12:29 (five years ago) link

the brand is strong

I'm honestly not sure how to feel about the suicidal ideation power ballad

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 12:35 (five years ago) link

Okay listening to this now and uh..... holy shit @ "Petrichor".

Tim F, Monday, 26 November 2018 12:51 (five years ago) link

it's a good Radiohead track!

I like queer. You like queer, senator? (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 November 2018 12:55 (five years ago) link

this band's sequencing choices continue to absolutely baffle me, but that's an easy fix

Keep Desus & Mero out of this

The Poppy Bush AutoZone (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 26 November 2018 13:11 (five years ago) link

I know it's corny as shit, but I feel like crying so much during 'the man who married a robot'.

Nourry, Monday, 26 November 2018 13:14 (five years ago) link

ftr I have never watched Desus & Mero?

"Mine" seems to be pretty handily the best of the many ballads

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 13:18 (five years ago) link

the sequencing was pretty perfect on ILIWYS but it's a lot messier here

ufo, Monday, 26 November 2018 13:20 (five years ago) link

tbf tho I think this is a much trickier batch of songs to sequence

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 13:34 (five years ago) link

i really should spend more time with the parts of this album that aren't "i always wanna die (sometimes)"

first artist to mind when "Be My Mistake" chimes in: Ryan Adams

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 15:55 (five years ago) link

the first few times i listened to this i was kinda taken aback by how... soft the album is outside of the songs already released (+ i always wanna die). but it’s musically accomplished in a way i still didn’t expect from them for some reason.

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 November 2018 16:00 (five years ago) link

wtf how can I hear this

I'm hoping I wind up responding to this one like I did the last one but I'm having....some problems with it. I'll keep those to myself for a bit so we can all bask in glee

that Grande cover IS amazing

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 18:32 (five years ago) link

I've the same cavils, Simon.

I like queer. You like queer, senator? (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 November 2018 18:52 (five years ago) link

i'm still wrapping my head around it but: at the moment the range bugs me a little, it's almost too varied and very difficult to settle into. "be my mistake" is a very lovely song, i prefer it to the previous spare acoustic 1975 tracks a la "she lays down," but uh i have to tune out the lyrics a little

however "inside your mind" to the end is a remarkable run of songs

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 26 November 2018 18:58 (five years ago) link

weirdly "tootime" is now one of my absolute favorite 1975 songs

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 26 November 2018 18:59 (five years ago) link

the stylistic range is admirable, just wish there was a little more tempo/dynamic range. maybe they're saving it for Gravity's Rainbow or whatever the followup is going to be called

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 19:08 (five years ago) link

i found it a pretty bewildering album at first... i think there's something meta about the way the album is structured, there's a lot of sparseness in between big dopamine spikes and they perhaps naturally put out the latter songs as singles. the middle section -- from be my mistake to inside your mind -- feels a little soft i think but the album closes really strongly.

it sorta orients itself in your brain over time & i think the album makes sense in light of matty's comments about it being his "sincere" album... frankly it doesn't rly come thru to me lyrically ("sincerity is scary" is still pretty acidic) but it does to me insofar as the big thing w/ this album compared to their others is that there's such a strong emphasis on his vocals. there's lots of interplay b/w vocal manipulation (most of which is really cool to hear) and then something like "mine" which really centers him as a vocalist in a very traditionalist sense.

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 November 2018 19:18 (five years ago) link

imo "be my mistake" -> "sincerity" & even more so "inside your mind" -> "it's not living" are perfect juxtapositions

lowercase (eric), Monday, 26 November 2018 19:22 (five years ago) link

idk these guys have always coded as bros with an unusually deep grasp of the limitations of rock instruments, therefore they use their programmed instruments as prisms through which Healy refracts his asshole tendencies. I can understand why they disgust a lot of listeners, especially female listeners.

these two points do not quite live in harmony!

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 November 2018 19:29 (five years ago) link

matty doesn't really come off like an asshole on this record to me, "sincerity is scary" is acidic sure but more equivocal and self-critical than was even implied in "change of heart" (he spends almost the entire first verse giving himself shit over his own lyrics and heroin addiction). the worst he comes off is "be my mistake" which sure is a gentle acoustic ballad about cheating, and even then i just can't really deal with the "hair/feet" line my goodness

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 26 November 2018 19:38 (five years ago) link
