I'm hoping I wind up responding to this one like I did the last one but I'm having....some problems with it. I'll keep those to myself for a bit so we can all bask in glee

that Grande cover IS amazing

I've the same cavils, Simon.

i'm still wrapping my head around it but: at the moment the range bugs me a little, it's almost too varied and very difficult to settle into. "be my mistake" is a very lovely song, i prefer it to the previous spare acoustic 1975 tracks a la "she lays down," but uh i have to tune out the lyrics a little

however "inside your mind" to the end is a remarkable run of songs

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 26 November 2018 18:58 (five years ago) link

weirdly "tootime" is now one of my absolute favorite 1975 songs

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 26 November 2018 18:59 (five years ago) link

the stylistic range is admirable, just wish there was a little more tempo/dynamic range. maybe they're saving it for Gravity's Rainbow or whatever the followup is going to be called

resident hack (Simon H.), Monday, 26 November 2018 19:08 (five years ago) link

i found it a pretty bewildering album at first... i think there's something meta about the way the album is structured, there's a lot of sparseness in between big dopamine spikes and they perhaps naturally put out the latter songs as singles. the middle section -- from be my mistake to inside your mind -- feels a little soft i think but the album closes really strongly.

it sorta orients itself in your brain over time & i think the album makes sense in light of matty's comments about it being his "sincere" album... frankly it doesn't rly come thru to me lyrically ("sincerity is scary" is still pretty acidic) but it does to me insofar as the big thing w/ this album compared to their others is that there's such a strong emphasis on his vocals. there's lots of interplay b/w vocal manipulation (most of which is really cool to hear) and then something like "mine" which really centers him as a vocalist in a very traditionalist sense.

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 November 2018 19:18 (five years ago) link

imo "be my mistake" -> "sincerity" & even more so "inside your mind" -> "it's not living" are perfect juxtapositions

lowercase (eric), Monday, 26 November 2018 19:22 (five years ago) link

idk these guys have always coded as bros with an unusually deep grasp of the limitations of rock instruments, therefore they use their programmed instruments as prisms through which Healy refracts his asshole tendencies. I can understand why they disgust a lot of listeners, especially female listeners.

these two points do not quite live in harmony!

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 November 2018 19:29 (five years ago) link

matty doesn't really come off like an asshole on this record to me, "sincerity is scary" is acidic sure but more equivocal and self-critical than was even implied in "change of heart" (he spends almost the entire first verse giving himself shit over his own lyrics and heroin addiction). the worst he comes off is "be my mistake" which sure is a gentle acoustic ballad about cheating, and even then i just can't really deal with the "hair/feet" line my goodness

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 26 November 2018 19:38 (five years ago) link

wtf how can I hear this

“Give Yourself a Try” is a reference to “Disorder” by Joy Division. We’re from the same town as Joy Division. I’m from the same road. Being in Macclesfield, [England] you can’t escape the weight of Joy Division, especially if you’re a band.

suspected this was the case

There's a bit of Feist's "The Park" energy to a few of the ballads on this album, especially "Be My Mistake"

monotony, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 00:02 (five years ago) link

i think my favourite moment on first listen was probably the key change in "I Couldn’t Be More in Love"

monotony, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 00:04 (five years ago) link

after some more listens i don't think it's quite as great as iliwys. the many highs are just as great as their previous bests but it's a little more inconsistent and doesn't play to their strengths of writing incredible pop songs quite as much.

quite a few of the tracks have the same problem they often had on their debut - no bridge or anything equivalent to really elevate them. i really like "give yourself a try" but it doesn't really go anywhere - a bridge or solo or even just some sort of dynamic shift towards the end would significantly improve it. "inside your mind" and "be my mistake" aren't bad but also don't go anywhere and "surrounded by heads and bodies" is kinda pretty but feels fairly half-formed as a song.

and then "the man who married a robot" is just embarrassing and i have no idea what to make of "i like america", it's sorta cool but also doesn't really have anything to grab onto?

ufo, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 00:57 (five years ago) link

imo "i like america" is one of the best things here

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 01:12 (five years ago) link

sounds like the album's exploding

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 01:12 (five years ago) link

curious why they released this at the end of the year when they’ll get snubbed on eoy lists (many of which are already up or being written right now)

flopson, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 01:15 (five years ago) link

"i like america" is just a little monotonous to me? i like the sound of it but then it's just the same melodic fragment over and over

ufo, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 01:18 (five years ago) link

also i kinda like the static quality of "inside your mind," sounds kinda like it's just throbbing in the empty echoing arena of someone's... mind

xxp working on it up till p recently / wanting to establish an album-Era w the rollout

"Inside Your Mind," "How to Draw/Petrichor" and "It's Not Living (If It's Not with You)" seem like the unalloyed triumphs so far -- perfect meldings of, ah, sound and vision.

I like queer. You like queer, senator? (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 01:24 (five years ago) link

i'd still consider "love it if we made it" a perfect melding thereof (& don't rly get how it's a mess musically) but it feels awkward right after "petrichor", feels like it shld draw out from a roomier space mb? idk it's one of the less obvious sequencing decisions to me

honestly i'd think it'd go great btwn tracks 1&3 but also am trying not to think like that

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 01:39 (five years ago) link

i get not being the most impressed w "inside your mind" melodically but i think of the end ringing into the guitar coiling up at the beginning of "it's not living" as part of the former song's movement

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 01:43 (five years ago) link

lyrics aside "be my mistake" floats so movement isn't a big concern for me there

This is already growing on me, even if I wish there were a couple more upbeat tunes. If I had to describe their current mode, it would be "productively exhausting"

https://pitchfork.com/features/song-by-song/the-1975s-matty-healy-dissects-every-song-on-a-brief-inquiry-into-online-relationships/

There was one moment while making the record that, if you could bottle it, it would be better than any other drug. I was sat in my car, and I had to get this line. I had, “Consultation, degradation, fossil-fueling masturbation/Immigration, liberal kitsch, kneeling on a pitch...” And then I had “excited to be indicted.” I had all these things, but I didn’t have that one bit in between. I needed seven syllables. And I’d just written the Kanye line, and I was thinking, “What else has he famously said?” Then it was like [sings triumphant melody] the syllable spaces of “I moved on her like a bitch” just went in, game show-style, and I was like, “Oh my god! I’ve got it!” And then [my bandmates] were like, “It’s another swear word.” And I was like, “Oh yeah, that’s a bit annoying.” But then I was like, “No, if we’re going to get censored, we’re going to get censored for verbatim quoting the leader of the free world.” That is the song in its essence. How weird is reality?

Of course the natural next step in the story is for someone to link this thread to Healy and have him see what that moment of inspiration has wrought

my friends and i are going to do our first listen thru the album on thursday with some kind of interesting visuals on mute in the background. (for our first listen thru Life of Pablo we played the animated Watership Down film on mute lol)

my brother suggested Tron. i think something that mirrors the blocky, neon-lit sound of their music is definitely a good idea (anime?)

any suggestions?

i can't 100 percent guarantee this is a good idea but: try playing the new one with koyaanisqatsi on mute
