they did correct all the lyrics people put on genius lol

curious why they released this at the end of the year when they’ll get snubbed on eoy lists (many of which are already up or being written right now)

it’s the FOLIE A DEUX of the 10s

maura, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 04:03 (five years ago) link

they seemed poised for a critical breakthrough with this one

lol @ maura

today i think 'i couldn't be more in love' is the best song ever.

Looks like there are lots of official annotations here: https://genius.com/artists/The-1975

This is already growing on me, even if I wish there were a couple more upbeat tunes. If I had to describe their current mode, it would be "productively exhausting"

Too many ballads in the middle.

https://pitchfork.com/features/song-by-song/the-1975s-matty-healy-dissects-every-song-on-a-brief-inquiry-into-online-relationships/

There was one moment while making the record that, if you could bottle it, it would be better than any other drug. I was sat in my car, and I had to get this line. I had, “Consultation, degradation, fossil-fueling masturbation/Immigration, liberal kitsch, kneeling on a pitch...” And then I had “excited to be indicted.” I had all these things, but I didn’t have that one bit in between. I needed seven syllables. And I’d just written the Kanye line, and I was thinking, “What else has he famously said?” Then it was like [sings triumphant melody] the syllable spaces of “I moved on her like a bitch” just went in, game show-style, and I was like, “Oh my god! I’ve got it!” And then [my bandmates] were like, “It’s another swear word.” And I was like, “Oh yeah, that’s a bit annoying.” But then I was like, “No, if we’re going to get censored, we’re going to get censored for verbatim quoting the leader of the free world.” That is the song in its essence. How weird is reality?

Of course the natural next step in the story is for someone to link this thread to Healy and have him see what that moment of inspiration has wrought

if your intention here is to slyly needle at and/or resurrect a months-old horrible argument: hey, don't do that

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 19:36 (five years ago) link

my friends and i are going to do our first listen thru the album on thursday with some kind of interesting visuals on mute in the background. (for our first listen thru Life of Pablo we played the animated Watership Down film on mute lol)

my brother suggested Tron. i think something that mirrors the blocky, neon-lit sound of their music is definitely a good idea (anime?)

any suggestions?

hypernormalisation

teen heartthrob Pacey Winger (Will M.), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 19:59 (five years ago) link

tron would've been a good visual for i like it when you sleep, less so for this one

i can't 100 percent guarantee this is a good idea but: try playing the new one with koyaanisqatsi on mute

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 20:17 (five years ago) link

sans soleil would also prob work

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 20:21 (five years ago) link

i still can't get my head around loving this as a whole, though that may well come later on, but my god "i always wanna die (sometimes)"

THX 1138 imo

i have a lot of thoughts about that song that pretty much all require a content warning for suicidal ideation xp

oh excellent suggestion simon

lmao I tweeted something very similar

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 20:34 (five years ago) link

really any 70s sci-fi with a lot of open space will do. Solaris would be dope as well

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 20:34 (five years ago) link

yeah i was mostly thinking of something brighter and less actively digital than tron, solaris is another good one

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 20:35 (five years ago) link

honestly the Clooney/Sodes one might be a better fit

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 20:37 (five years ago) link

prettier people, for starters

Honestly reading through that whole thing led to kind of a rough night for myself and I thought that post would provide some closure, really didn't mean any animosity Brad

i'm imagining that 'southland tales' can be a good fit (but I'm obsessed with that film, so). and in some weird way, '#horror' by tara subkoff as well.

Nourry, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 22:28 (five years ago) link

omg lol southland tales is perfect

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 22:30 (five years ago) link

southland tales is perfect

with our without the 1975, that's always correct.

this must be my dream

I like queer. You like queer, senator? (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 22:39 (five years ago) link

my half-suggestion might be evangelion: death given the montage-like editing & runtime, it fits almost exactly if you append another song afterwards, but obv if you haven't seen the series etc

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 27 November 2018 23:01 (five years ago) link

thank u all for the suggestions !

koyaaniqatsi & hypernormalization both occurred to me but i think i want to steer away from the actively dystopian/overwhelming vibe

my brother also initially suggested thx 1138 alongside tron, i'd never even heard of it til today! seems like a sign

As others have said, there is a lot to take in here. My first thought and only really complaint is that I don't really like what they've done with the intro. The way the second version went into Love Me was a moment and this time it doesn't quite work.

I was never keen on the acoustic ballads that closed ILIWYS as they always felt so out of place. I love that this time round they've really given the album the big ending it deserves. Mine gives me George Michael's Kissing A Fool vibes and I Couldn’t Be In Love More is an even better version of Versace On The Floor. Holy crap at I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes). That chorus is incredible. It's a kind of power ballad meets some Britpop album closer from the late 90s (I feel bad saying this, but I get Mansun vibes from his falsetto). There's so much great stuff here, but I'm coming back to those three songs right now.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 03:38 (five years ago) link

the ballads could have worked to close ILIWYS but they just weren't as strong songs as the most of the album so it was an underwhelming ending. the closing trio on this one are fantastic though, if they want to do ballads then please more like those, or more like the synth ballads from the EPs which are still some of their best songs

ufo, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 04:10 (five years ago) link

Mansun mention otm, get kind of a Little Kix vibe from some of this

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 28 November 2018 19:51 (five years ago) link

I can imagine them covering Forgive Me, almost

imago, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 20:00 (five years ago) link

Has anyone said Her for the movie thing. That might work.

gman59, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 20:19 (five years ago) link

it's a little odd that this album's the real critical breakthrough when the last one was better and a bigger step up, but i guess that lead to more critics taking them seriously this time?

ufo, Thursday, 29 November 2018 06:14 (five years ago) link

^^ this has always been a thing, i think, although i also feel like i'm seeing it a bit more these days: critics, *very* generally speaking, really latching on to a great band approximately one album "late"
