Also I have decided that all the songs on this album that purportedly are about cheating ("TootimeX3", "Be My Mistake") are actually about heroin.

thank u, the 1975.

Wow, if I didn't read that (weirdly short/incomplete?) Pitchfork review I don't think I would have picked up on the now blatantly obvious Joy Division nod in "Give Yourself a Try." Certainly when we devised that huge list of comparisons that came up discussing the last record I doubt any of us expected to see Joy Division added to the litany.

which i wrote bc the bass line in "sex" reminded me of post-punk

xp

What if they pull a Sufjan and never release Notes on a Conditional Form or whatever it's supposed to be called

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 29 November 2018 19:53 (five years ago) link

i v v v much hope they release it because i've been realizing how much a brief inquiry is blasted with daylight, and i really want to hear nighttime side

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 November 2018 19:59 (five years ago) link

*looks both ways and speaks in a low whisper* i chatted w matty a few weeks ago and he was pretty adamant that the album will be coming out when they say... i had asked him about roy hargrove and he said roy played on a song that will be on the next album, but i also got the sense that the album making process is very fluid and i wouldn't put a ton of stock in the way he's described that album in the press so far

J0rdan S., Thursday, 29 November 2018 20:32 (five years ago) link

oh yeah i don't actually expect to get the night bus 1975 record i want

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 November 2018 20:34 (five years ago) link

i'm thrilled hargrove is on another 1975 song, that rules

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 November 2018 20:38 (five years ago) link

he mentioned on twitter that track is "Frail State of Mind"

ufo, Thursday, 29 November 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

i gotta ask: how is Matty as an interview?

alpine static, Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

I don't think anyone itt has interviewed him but there are like 20 matty interviews that have been published this week that can give you an idea

k3vin k., Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:15 (five years ago) link

oh I obviously don't read ignore me please

k3vin k., Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:15 (five years ago) link

i loved interviewing him way back in 2013. he had an infectious enthusiasm for everything that came up in our conversation. he's very smart but not very good at thinking about what he says before he says it lol

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:15 (five years ago) link

man the joy division rip sailed past me somehow ... i think it's one of their more ingenuous lifts because the tone of the song is so different, good example of reinventing the familiar

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:09 (five years ago) link

pretty funny to be the one who's like 'pshh this is a blue nile bite' / 'holy shit that was joy division'

ilx is a special place

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:10 (five years ago) link

I thought Joy Division but also late '00s TV on the Radio.

you all are talking about the first album right? because I don't hear that at all on the second album.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:31 (five years ago) link

im talking about this new album which literally takes a riff from "Disorder" for "Give Yourself a Try"

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:32 (five years ago) link

No, I know, (though I think you mean Disorder?). I'm talking about folks like Brad, in the very first post, mentioning post-punk and I guess meaning joy division, and Alfred mentioning Joy Division as well. It'ss obvious in that quote on the new album, I've just never really noticed it in their music before.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:38 (five years ago) link

haha, that is so weird, I could have sworn you said She's Lost Control. But yeah, Disorder.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:39 (five years ago) link

you all are talking about the first album right? because I don't hear that at all on the second album.

― Josh in Chicago,

"Give Yoruself a Try." I referred to the drum machine and screech guitar in the first thirty seconds or so. I thought of "Dancing Choose."

I like queer. You like queer, senator? (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:39 (five years ago) link

the post-punk thing re: the first album was almost certainly referring to "Sex"

ufo, Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:42 (five years ago) link

yep, and pretty much only “sex”

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:46 (five years ago) link

but it’s there! imo. lol

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:46 (five years ago) link

it's a little odd that this album's the real critical breakthrough when the last one was better and a bigger step up, but i guess that lead to more critics taking them seriously this time?

― ufo, Thursday, November 29, 2018 6:14 AM (sixteen hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Without having heard the album or any of the tracks released on Youtube yet - I will of course be rectifying this tomorrow - I'm getting the general feeling that (critics aside) reactions are far more cooler and less enthusiastic on this album in comparison to the previous one, and the high critic scores are some kind of Be Here Now-level overcorrection due to them underrating ILIWYS...

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:50 (five years ago) link

Pretty sure I like the last one better.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:55 (five years ago) link

it's still excellent, just a little more inconsistent than the last one. hardly a Be Here Now situation

ufo, Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:55 (five years ago) link

I'm also beginning to see pissed off comments dotted around the internet from people claiming to be long-time fans who don't seem to be into the idea of the band expanding their fanbase...

I dunno, it feels weirdly like "the backlash starts here" in a way...

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:57 (five years ago) link

i don't think "the backlash starts here" really applies to a band that people have really really loved to hate right from the start

ufo, Thursday, 29 November 2018 22:58 (five years ago) link

The backlash starts here... with Turrican. To the barricades!

Monica Kindle (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 November 2018 23:00 (five years ago) link

I doubt there will be a backlash, the album's close enough to the last one that I can't imagine they lose a single fan.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 29 November 2018 23:01 (five years ago) link

a hidden Healy influence, I'd say

I like queer. You like queer, senator? (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 29 November 2018 23:05 (five years ago) link

Yes, but quite a fair few of those people that loved to hate them - and I was one of them to the point of being such a painful bastard about it - eventually became converts!

However, I'm more referring to those that loved them from the very beginning. For a band to divide opinion as radically as The 1975 did, it must have led to a certain kind of underdog status in the eyes of many who loved the band, or as "underdog" as a band of their size could be. The kind of mass acceptance that is threatening to happen with this record kinda removes that.

(xxpost)

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 29 November 2018 23:05 (five years ago) link

they’ve always been a huge band, they’ve been selling out shows since even before the debut. so i have no idea what you’re on about

if fans are pissed about critics finally picking up on them... who cares? why are we even talking about these strawpeople

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 November 2018 23:11 (five years ago) link

In my case, I personally couldn't give a shit about any of that stuff as a recent convert. I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy the new material at the very least.

(x-post)

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 29 November 2018 23:12 (five years ago) link

most of the fans i know who have been in the tank since the eps are delighted with this record and happy for the band for finally getting critical recognition
