I don't think anyone itt has interviewed him but there are like 20 matty interviews that have been published this week that can give you an idea

i loved interviewing him way back in 2013. he had an infectious enthusiasm for everything that came up in our conversation. he's very smart but not very good at thinking about what he says before he says it lol

man the joy division rip sailed past me somehow ... i think it's one of their more ingenuous lifts because the tone of the song is so different, good example of reinventing the familiar

I'm talking about folks like Brad, in the very first post, mentioning post-punk and I guess meaning joy division, and Alfred mentioning Joy Division as well. It'ss obvious in that quote on the new album, I've just never really noticed it in their music before.

Without having heard the album or any of the tracks released on Youtube yet - I will of course be rectifying this tomorrow - I'm getting the general feeling that (critics aside) reactions are far more cooler and less enthusiastic on this album in comparison to the previous one, and the high critic scores are some kind of Be Here Now-level overcorrection due to them underrating ILIWYS...

Pretty sure I like the last one better.

I'm also beginning to see pissed off comments dotted around the internet from people claiming to be long-time fans who don't seem to be into the idea of the band expanding their fanbase...

Yes, but quite a fair few of those people that loved to hate them - and I was one of them to the point of being such a painful bastard about it - eventually became converts!

However, I'm more referring to those that loved them from the very beginning. For a band to divide opinion as radically as The 1975 did, it must have led to a certain kind of underdog status in the eyes of many who loved the band, or as "underdog" as a band of their size could be. The kind of mass acceptance that is threatening to happen with this record kinda removes that.

In my case, I personally couldn't give a shit about any of that stuff as a recent convert. I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy the new material at the very least.

Well yeah, this is what I've just said - they've always been a big band (and even then I keep forgetting just how well their debut did in the US) but a very divisive one.

In that case, it's reassuring to know that there are fans sticking with them as they pick up new ones.

As for the record itself, I'll make comment on that when I actually hear it.

I did listen to ILIWYS twice today, though.

I agree with what was said above about the last two tracks on ILIWYS, btw. There's nothing wrong with them at all, but the more I listen to that album, the more that 'Paris' feels like the true album closer and 'Nana' and 'She Lays Down' feel more like bonus tracks or an extended P.S.

Also, 'Pressure' from their first LP rules.

"i couldn't be more in love" is the greatest song ever made

I wouldn't go quite that far but it finally clicked for me this morning (I think my 6th listen to the album, at 5am, after a restless night with a nasty sore throat); up until now Surrounded by Heads and Bodies/Mine/I Couldn't Be More in Love had felt a bit disappointing but something about listening to them in the quiet early morning made them stand out in a way that they hadn't before.

I still don't like "Be My Mistake" though; otoh I tend to skip the last two songs on ILIWYS, I think the acoustic ballads are mostly their weakest songs.

Of the songs that weren't out before the album, I Like America & America Likes Me/Inside Your Mind/I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes) are A++++. I would quite like to hear a version of Inside Your Mind with production more like Me, though (more synths, less piano).

I'm actually OK with The Man Who Married a Robot, it's about as good as a Siri-narrated story about an internet troll could be, I guess.
