On that front, I'd say the most noticeable difference in my forties (and really for the last several years of my thirties) is that I used to have some degree of demonstrable niche appeal but of late I don't pick up on any signs of putative interest frivolously-prurient interest from anyone at all ever, period.

(Thought I'd cap off that sentence with a sampling of the word salad so favored by the yoot of today.)

on the behalf of thrift shoppers and vintage clothing wearers, old clothes do not equal old person :)

― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, November 29, 2018 11:13 AM (forty-two minutes ago)

quite true! so now, as a 44 yr old thrift shopper and vintage clothing wearer, when I shop for new clothes, not only am I looking at things that resemble new clothes I bought in the 80s (frou-frou fussy & puffy sleeves are a thing again) but also clothes I thrifted in the 80s/early 90s from prior decades ... there is a lot of cognitive dissonance involved (see also record shopping ... this should be a $3 record because that is how much it was priced at in the dollar bin in 1991) ... though I did recently buy a new dress that is more or less a reproduction of a vintage 50s dress I had thrifted around 1991 but I got rid of a few years back because it was a size 10, and I am very much not a size 10 anymore.

I am happy that this thread turned flirty. I feel like old ilx had a lot of weird crushes/hookups. thx quincie.

Yerac, Thursday, 29 November 2018 20:07 (five years ago) link

new ilx might have the same, just people are more secretive about it because other ilxors can get creepy about stuff

sarahell, Thursday, 29 November 2018 20:09 (five years ago) link

xp yup i totally empathize

My boss -- some years younger than me -- was amazed to learn that the band T-shirt I'm wearing today is from 1992, marvelling about the quality. (It is interesting to see which shirts have held up over the years -- and said shirt was a Ned's Atomic Dustbin one, so hey, it keeps up my good name.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 29 November 2018 20:19 (five years ago) link

there will always be earnest 20 something straight cis-dudes on ilx ... there will be more treeships

sarahell, Thursday, 29 November 2018 20:22 (five years ago) link

P sure LJ is unaccountably still in his late teens or something.

he is 31 iirc ... when he was in his 20s i think he proposed marriage to me on ilx? ... glad he has matured

lol wut?!

this thread got crazy

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 29 November 2018 20:31 (five years ago) link

being a cis-woman on a board dominated by straight men is inherently awkward

indeed

esp if you are single or not obviously unavailable

sarahell, Thursday, 29 November 2018 20:36 (five years ago) link

40 is pretty good, have made measurable strides recently in emotional maturity and self-compassion. yay meditation and therapy. lucky not to have had any health problems yet. single and feel weird about it (not coming here to pick anyone up tho)

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Thursday, 29 November 2018 23:05 (five years ago) link

i'm over 50

Me too. Where's our thread?

Probably everyone's too tired to make one.

Ned Trifle X, Thursday, 29 November 2018 23:15 (five years ago) link

Is there an over 60 thread? Would offer my Medicare Open Enrollment expertise. Which is actually a thing I have. Ask me anything.

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Thursday, 27 June 2019 20:23 (four years ago) link

I ran into a friend I hadn't seen in a while yesterday, who was surprised when he figured out that I was over 40. "You are perpetually in your mid-30's to me," he said. That was sweet.

Herman Woke (cryptosicko), Thursday, 27 June 2019 20:25 (four years ago) link

way ahead of you puny children

mark s, Thursday, 27 June 2019 20:25 (four years ago) link

is it just me, or when you look at pictures of people you knew in highschool, college, in your 20s, they all look a lot older, meanwhile you feel like you don't look much different than you did 15 years ago?

sarahell, Thursday, 27 June 2019 20:27 (four years ago) link

we are the Blest

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 27 June 2019 20:29 (four years ago) link

maybe it's also a product of not having children? ... it does weird me out to see guys (not women, though, just guys) that I had "flirtations" with when I was younger ... seeing pictures of them with their kids. ... it feels more like "i shouldn't be seeing this" than if they sent me a dick pic out of the blue

sarahell, Thursday, 27 June 2019 20:33 (four years ago) link

It’s definitely weird, especially if you tend toward valuing your own privacy

calstars, Thursday, 27 June 2019 20:37 (four years ago) link

I think not having kids might have something to do with it. I saw a picture of me from 3 years ago when I was 39 about to turn 40 and I still look pretty young. 3 years later I look old as shit. but a lot has happened in those 3 years

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 27 June 2019 20:39 (four years ago) link

Someone at work, who is 24, joked that I was technically old enough to be his father. He has a nine month old kid, so I'm technically old enough to be someone's grandfather.

calstars, Thursday, 27 June 2019 21:06 (four years ago) link

sigh -- I still have a penchant for ironic thrift store t-shirts (or t-shirts that look like thrift store t-shirts) and I saw a bunch of grandma themed ones, and I thought about getting one ... until I thought that I could be someone's grandma and people might see wearing it and think it wasn't ironic at all

sarahell, Thursday, 27 June 2019 21:08 (four years ago) link

ugh .. people might see *me* wearing it and think it wasn't ironic

sarahell, Thursday, 27 June 2019 21:08 (four years ago) link

Only the ones who've lost their hair. (I find baldies who are substantially younger than me really shocking. Last night I saw a dude on the subway whose hair was seriously thinned out on top and he couldn't have been more than 25 or so. I felt very sad for him.)

My brother's three years younger than me but I think he looks older than me. He has two kids and is pretty fat; also, he dresses like what he is, an ex-military father of two teenage sons (baggy short-sleeve button-down shirts, khaki shorts, sandals, Guy Fieri-esque sunglasses).

I am 42 on Saturday. I have just shaved off the ginger beard I have sported since 2006, I now look like a startled and pudgy grey owl. And also like my mother.

thomasintrouble, Thursday, 27 June 2019 21:19 (four years ago) link

I'm 44, everything seems fine. Don't feel that old, but also sometimes feel a little intimidated knowing that I'm around the half way point and I cannot imagine the second half being more eventful than the first, at least not in a good way.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 June 2019 21:24 (four years ago) link
