All sorts of Hollywood bullshit is nominated for awards every year. I don't see any major difference between something like, say, Training Day, and the more critically acclaimed superhero flicks

FTR, I seem to have no problem with direct-to-video horror film releases from that era, but I apparently hold Marvel to a higher standard.

If we're opening the floodgates, though, leave us not forget this produced-yet-unreleased masterpiece:

couple of things are getting scrambled up here --

* bresson and bergman as stand-ins for extremely serious, important makers of films that speak abt the human condition and have stood the test of time.

* the academy awards ("oscars"), an annual trade event where hollywood votes for its own and some other things; in some sense the equivalent of the "best southeastern regional concrete sales rep" but also sometimes a shorthand for high-quality work in and near a hollywood mode. bresson won no oscars; bergman won three plus a lifetime achievement one.

* moviegoers and critics who watch various kinds of movies, praising Logan as being a well-made genre picture with some good performances, and found room for it in end-of-year lists including oscar predictions (comparing it not so much to Moonlight etc. as to Alien Covenant and John Wick 2).

* ppl who primarily watch blockbusters and franchise stuff, who feel it is unappreciated as a Great Movie ("up there with Shawshank Redemption and Reservoir Dogs!"), and/or their avatars in print and web media whose role it is to generate endless content surrounding high-profile franchises, along the lines of "ten ways you didn't realize Logan was a secret western!" and "ethan hawke SLAMS superhero movies in major diss to fans!"

neither of these last two groups are talking about bresson or bergman, but hawke's quote is i think directed at the last group for giving some superhero movies the highest praise they have from their POV - they're talking about Logan as if it were a much better film because they don't watch many better films, in some measure because they've been crowded out of theaters. thus he may also be annoyed at the critical establishment for seeming to back them up and depriving attention from stuff that actually needed help at the box office. this would be a genuine problem for someone hawke-esque (if he were not massively rich, iirc through a stake in some franchise or other?) who wants to get tougher movies made and seen. but the bresson thing is obviously hyperbole and shouldn't bog us down.

There's nothing in the prequel that will come as a surprise to anyone who's already seen Reformed.

the brave move would have been coming out against the middlebrow awards bait which is also stealing oxygen from smaller films

like really giving Darkest Hour the business

ive enjoyed most of the marvels et al but nobody elevated any of them that i can recall unforch

puppy bash (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:25 (five years ago) link

training day was the best argument for david ayer sticking to scriptwriting over directing, or maybe an argument for antoine fuqua not being able to spin straw into gold when it comes to some of the other scripts he's directed

mh, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:35 (five years ago) link

I'm not sure what anyone is talking about anymore. If that is at all my fault I apologize.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

When are they making a Carvel movie?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

wow, just perusing Hawke's filmography and I guess he starred in a Fuqua-directed Magnificent Seven remake in 2016

where is your Bergman now, Ethan?

Number None, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:41 (five years ago) link

hawke is v interesting is there a marvel for him out there

puppy bash (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:42 (five years ago) link

obviously he ranks that as acting in a kurosawa adaptation remake, top flight material

the point is fair though: most of the superhero movies, at their most serious, aren't that far off from magnificent seven. only instead of tracking down a guy who can shoot uncommonly well to join your team, you end up recruiting a guy with claws or w/e

mh, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:43 (five years ago) link

A lot of them are like "let's get the band back together again!" stories, except instead of a battle of the band at the end there is just a battle.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

searching for Hawke today gets you: "Ethan Hawke Joins Terrence Howard, Wesley Snipes In The RZA-Directed Heist Thriller ‘Cut Throat City’"

he really should stop criticizing other people for having a shtick when he keeps doing these roles that are definitely a shtick

mh, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

lol also: "Ethan Hawke on Why Vincent D'Onofrio Deserves an Oscar More than 'Some British Dork'"

hmm what's D'Onofrio been up to lately

mh, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:46 (five years ago) link

Yeah, but he does those movies to pay for stuff like "First Reformed," right? Five for them, and one for me.

Ethan Hawke should try for one of those tons-of-makeup roles, or a CGI animal person or something. Get that Groot money.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

hmm what's D'Onofrio been up to lately

Acting AG, iirc.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

i think he may be great idk tho its the kind of suspicion that would disappear if i looked harder than sideways at it

puppy bash (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:48 (five years ago) link

i believe i’ve already established itt that ethan hawke will be playing johnny blaze in the ghost rider reboot i am casting in my mind

We're in 2009—it's time to take risks, (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:51 (five years ago) link

I get the point that movies that have an actual artistic intent and involve more work from the actors in the realm of, say, acting rather than having the patience to sit in a makeup chair for eight hours are preferable work and are subjectively better as art. Reading about how the Coens decided they'd rather pitch to Netflix than try to make a play for traditional studio money for their oddball project is kind of disheartening. But if actors can work on smaller projects and parlay that success into a big paycheck wearing a cape and pretending to punch people, then sure, go for it
