thank you. yeah I don't like doing 'normal' vocals.

I recorded this badly 4 years ago but I still like it

You and austin should get together to make the spaciest all-guitar jams of all time.

lovely playing Evan

Thank you! I was really enjoying your "old" link up there just now (but haven't clicked the new one yet)

Evan, Friday, 7 December 2018 18:41 (five years ago) link

proud of that one. did it a few years ago all in my bedroom with my mates using Reason and various instruments. thank you

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Friday, 7 December 2018 20:19 (five years ago) link

Evan, that's rad. Very Vini Reilly.

dog latin, is this all you? Just in terms of production quality, it has a really nice, warm sound. The song is really good, too. I love how it feels kind of formless. I'm expecting a chord change or a refrain at certain points and it doesn't come right away.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Friday, 7 December 2018 21:51 (five years ago) link

yeah just using Reason and my guitar/bass and programmed drums. Thanks man.

I worked out a neat trick where I sped the tempo of the whole instrumental track up to double speed (without changing the pitch, then slowed it down back to the original speed (this time with the pitch changing).

then I did it again, slowed the original track right down to half tempo, then sped it up so it was the same original tempo but pitched up

then I overplayed these two tracks on the original sound and it gives it this weird harmonic fullness

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Friday, 7 December 2018 22:16 (five years ago) link

what I'm saying is you essentially have a pitched down track and a pitched up track layer over the top of the original and it gives it this sort of thrombing sound

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Friday, 7 December 2018 22:18 (five years ago) link

Well, it sounds really unique either way.

Sounds really good dl! Although I want to hear those handclaps much louder and heavily compressed ;)

those have been bugging me. I'll try some compression. cheers

i am feeling bold so i am going to share this recently recorded improvised noodle for drumset and contact mic -- it's noisy and weird but it's what i sound like i guess? :) https://soundcloud.com/marshmallowy/12-7-2018-improvisation-with-contact-mic-and-drums

on a different note, here is one of my experiments with the looper. it's just voice and drums. it's also very slow but steady i hope https://soundcloud.com/marshmallowy/week-16

the first one is hella noisy and the second one is way different -- not noisy? both are basement Zoom recordings so don't expect much in that department :)

like that LL, using vox as loops is cool..

trying to stop my habit of doing nothing but fucking around with downloading plugins and actually recording stuff, this is a one-mic guitar thing, finally got a pretty good quality large diaphragm condenser recommended by my friend who owns a studio as the only "cheap" (relative term) mic that he would consider using in his studio (Shure KSM27, now called just the SM27)

can i make a request?
can we not post links without a little explanation or introduction or something? i think a tiny bit of context will increase the value of this valuable thread imo.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 21 December 2018 17:48 (five years ago) link

Sorry, LL. Astralpop is all about the listener's interpretation. So, I'm just about presenting my music with as little context as possible.

But, since you asked, it's a new single for winter solstice.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Friday, 21 December 2018 18:12 (five years ago) link

even just a few words like "here's something i made" would be nice so it's not a blind link to another website that one needs to click to know what it is. speaking only for myself, i am more likely to click a link when i know what it is.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 21 December 2018 22:12 (five years ago) link

most music is about the listener's interpretation no? :)

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 21 December 2018 22:12 (five years ago) link

Totally agree, I mostly post things here so I can add the backstory about the insecurities and challenges involved, which I wouldn't post elsewhere. And I enjoy hearing about other people's travails as well.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 21 December 2018 22:19 (five years ago) link

when i post things it's usually because you all are the only people on earth who i share it with, other than a guy i played in a band with back in high school

Karl Malone, Friday, 21 December 2018 22:22 (five years ago) link

i post here when i am feeling nervy, and it's a place i feel safe being heard.

i know that most of the stuff i record is kinda half-baked -- i meant to say it earlier but I like random collaborations. if someone has a weird urge to add something to one of my tracks, please be my guest. they're only me solo because i don't have other people to play with most of the time. :)

Xmas jazz gig, once again backing up trumpeter Ler0y J0nes. It went much better than I feared, but seeing some other clips back, I both play ahead of the beat & make stupid faces more often than I would like.

Happy new year everyone. Thank you all for being who you are. Just fantastic people, all of you.🙂

This is a thing I've been working on since finishing MENTAL ILLNESS. It came to me really quickly in comparison to MENTAL ILLNESS. Some of the songs on there were literally years old, but all of the spectral projections songs were created after MENTAL ILLNESS. It's been a really liberating process for me to begin and complete something in a matter of a couple weeks that I'm this happy with. I do feel like, as a whole, this is the best thing I've ever done.

Here's a somewhat narrative slideshow, with spectral 6 as the soundtrack: https://youtu.be/7x6rX-IhGRQ

Thank you again, everyone. ilx contributed to saving my life in 2017 and 2018. I'm serious.

New MSS out today as well as the latest weirder VHHP collaborative project. It's more of the usual noise drone experiments if that floats your boat.

I updated a song I posted upthread. Tried re-recording some of the vocals and tweaking a few things. I'm still not 100% sure it's finished and I guess I never will. It's mainly the vocals I have trouble with - I guess they're deliberately incongruous but I still want them to fit in with the track like they do in my mind's eye

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1xzjlBu7ozYCpYbBDf4tRbn9eHrh1mRNl

Any more feedback very welcome - especially re: production. I'm using an old version of Reason, so I can't use plugins sadly.

Cheers Austin - yeah I did post a previous version before.

I made this little bit of hyper-distorted freeform DFA madness the other day: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1SQF-I3_U4-binD1UapBmU8Ss42XGQf0D

Not sure if I'll be doing anything else with it. The vocals are adlibbed in one take. It's bonkers fun. I kinda like it even though it's a bit slap-dash
