'You Make Loving Fun' is one of my favourite songs of all time at this point.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 15 December 2018 22:14 (five years ago) link

have mercy, baby!

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 15 December 2018 22:23 (five years ago) link

I'm surprised you have 'Brown Eyes' so high above the likes of 'Over and Over', 'Little Lies', 'Songbird', 'Everywhere' etc. It's an amazing production (the drum sound alone is pure ear candy, and those harmonies) but as a song it's a mere wisp of a thing. Even so, I find it to be a highlight of Tusk.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 15 December 2018 22:32 (five years ago) link

With "Brown Eyes/Never Make Me Cry" song and arrangement are inseparable, as they often are in 90 percent of scenarios.

I agree with the first part, disagree with the second part.

I feared the worst when I saw this thread suddenly revived.

I'm off to spin "Hold Me" and "Everywhere" on repeat until the end of time.

Loved her, the magic ingredient that gave the classic lineup richness and depth to go with Nicks' sparkle and Buckingham's energy.

And not only in her own songs but also her harmonies and keyboard.

Now I know how the sun must feel every time it sets :-(

Such a great singer and songwriter (and pretty decent keyboardist) who often seemed to get overshadowed by her bandmates. RIP

for my money she has the best songs on their best albums. RIP

I was hoping "Everywhere" would get its "Running Up That Hill" earlier this season. It and Tusk's "Never Forget" got a lot of rooftop play in NYC and Chicago about 15 years ago as part of Balearic mixes.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 November 2022 20:58 (one year ago) link

I think the song is in a prominent Chevy ad right now?

Damn, she was my favorite of the FM frontpeople. Loved her songs so much. Rest in peace.

Omg the wordless chorus of Brown Eyes, geez

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 1 December 2022 12:08 (one year ago) link

Can anyone explain to me what it is about the rhythm section of Fleetwood Mac that so entirely rules? I don’t really have the musicologist words for it but I know it’s there

It’s in the off-beats in “brown eyes” for example — I feel like you wouldn’t get those touches with a conventional rhythm section

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 1 December 2022 12:10 (one year ago) link

Fleetwood plays slightly behind the beat but has an instinct for the punctuative roll or fill that other bands would kill for.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 1 December 2022 12:53 (one year ago) link

mcvie’s power (that signature doubled root note on the 1) and telepathic chemistry with him means that even the most delicate fm song grooves like crazy

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Thursday, 1 December 2022 13:16 (one year ago) link

Forgot about Willie's record with Ryan Adams & The Cardinals that covers and takes it name from "Songbird"

Yeah, Soto otm re: Mick's gifts. And John, he's pretty great, too, of course; iirc Mike Mills had a "what would John McVie do?" maxim. I think in their case as a rhythm section, it could be the result of all those formative years woodshedding, which helps them swing and shuffle through stuff like "Over My Head." Though keep in mind that c. "Tusk" specifically, Bucky was pushing Mick in pretty weird directions, and around "Mirage" and "Tango" I suspect there was a lot of studio magic at work on the drums, when it's even Mick.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 1 December 2022 15:40 (one year ago) link

He's barely on Tango. It's definitely him on "Little Lies," "Seven Wonders," and the title track, but the rhythm tracks on "Big Love" and "Everywhere" and "Isn't It Midnight" and "You and I" sound like drum machines.

Nice note from latter-day bandmate Mike Campbell:

Oh dear…..sweet Christine has left us…..that voice, those eyes, that smile. No one like her in the universe.
I remember in rehearsal once after playing “I’d Rather Go Blind,” she looked at me and said, “I like playing the blues with you, Mike.” I’ve never met anyone with such an angelic aura. Always so kind to everyone.

We will all miss you so…..no one could ever fill those shoes….
Mike

That’s great!
