i saw the promos for it and thought i would hate it...i don't have cable and had never seen 'the man show'...and the first show ran right after the super bowl; they had this big tie-in with it...so i thought, oh great, this lumpy sports guy has a talk show; i thought he was a sportscenter guy or something...

anyway, i caught it by accident and was really, really pleasantly surprised. he's very funny, and he's been taking some real risks with the show.

i think adam corrolla is pretty much a comic genius. doesn't the etymology of 'genius' have to do with having a little 'spirit' inside of you? well, i think he's got that going on...he's got the very 'spirit' of humor inside him. he's one of those people who says something that makes you laugh almost everytime he opens his mouth. there's something very funny about his very attitude, his mere presence. the guy exudes funny. maybe some people don't like him because they just associate him with 'loveline' or 'the man show', and they think all of his humor is puerile and scatalogical...but, it's not at all; he makes very brilliant observations life and his mind is very quick and always going in unanticipated directions & making unexpected connections.

I like how they use an actual stage (both outdoors and the indoor lobby/club set-up) for the musical acts, instead of having them play on a regular soundstage like on other shows (Leno, Letterman, Kilborn, O'Brian etc).

Surely you are high. Jimmy Kimmell = teh suck. Conan is not only funny at times, but when he's not, he's fuckin' hilarious. So you've got your funny interspersed with fuckin' hilarity vs. teh suck. Jimmy's all, "okay, um, whatever you were talking about, I'm just going to flatly read the next topic off this little card in front of me with hint of understanding that I am supposed to be entertaining. Adam Corolla = teh suck, but he's the only thing that made Jimmy Kimmel mildly funny... and notice Jimmy has him on all the damn time, night after night even! (FWIW, Adam quit the Man Show and is helping Jimmy out with his new lame show).

In conclusion, Jimmy is the modern day Chevy Chase of late night, minus the crippling fear. In its place, insert ingorant bliss.

However, I do like the intro to the show!

I like to imagine that Jimmy Kimmel is really Edward G. Robinson's good-for-nothing grandson. Maybe E.G. Robinson disinherited him and his ambitions are related to trying to make good with his life finally. Idk

one year passes...

Someone sent me some sketch he had on his show where they had kids act out the Kanye BBC interview and it was like the unfunniest thing ever. I mean they played the real clip first, which was actually fucking hilarious, and THEN they played the kids reading the SAME PART, and i couldn't even understand them. He intro'd it really badly too, maybe just bc he's not funny or maybe because he knew the sketch sucked.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 27 September 2013 15:06 (ten years ago) link

his ratio of funny stuff to painful unfunny stuff is much higher than any other late night host imo. the "lie witness news" segments are great

frogbs, Friday, 27 September 2013 15:12 (ten years ago) link

I don't get Lie Witness News. "Look at these full of shit 21-year-olds, aren't they full of shit? haw haw fashion is STUPID" Kimmel is too smug to be funny

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 27 September 2013 15:25 (ten years ago) link

i dont think its so much "fasion is stupid" as it is watching people straight up make up shit on the spot because they think it'll help them get on TV

frogbs, Friday, 27 September 2013 15:29 (ten years ago) link

The thing that really annoyed me about his lead-in, and it was subtle but I feel like it says a lot about him, is that he felt this need to "explain" the bit. It was like he was trying to do a "zany, conan-style" bit, but doesn't really get zany. That's sort of the vibe I get from him generally, that he's this rigidly "regular guy" type who either doesn't completely understand things that are "weird" or doesn't have the guts to get close to them.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 27 September 2013 15:33 (ten years ago) link

Both times I've watched Lie Witness News the lead-in was "look at these losers claiming to be big fans of something that doesn't exist," and both times it was a slap-chop editing job that amounted to "Q: are you a big fan of this not-existent thing? A: sure."

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 27 September 2013 15:57 (ten years ago) link

they say a lot more than "sure". but to each their own

either way Kanye's reaction to all this is really the funny bit

It was at least semi interesting to see the post Trump victory Lie Witness Newses, possibly in the vacuum of having watched it before that. Did wonder how spontaneous they were. But if that is the clued-in ness of the person in the street it does make you wonder if there is any hope.

feel like this sort of thing has been done in the past, where hardline right-wingers get confronted with "well do you think THIS person should be deported?" and they start walking stuff back and getting all sheepish. now in the age of Trump we have people willing to stare someone in the face and tell them directly that they ought to be deported to a place they have no memory of and have their family broken up. kinda puts those "hey lets just find some common ground" articles the NYT constantly churns out in perspective

and treated like heroes by a pretty powerful echo chamber for doing so. it's fucking gross. not sure how you counter it.

The Man Show was terrible, but Kimmel grew up and became a real live person while Adam Carolla never did. In fact, he may even be immeasurably worse now.

feel like this experiment did not go as planned

it pretty much went the same way all my dumb FB arguments on this go

"I'm not anti immigration, I just want immigrants who are educated, will pay taxes, and aren't criminals..."
"Okay, here is a set of immigrants who are all those things, plus ineligible for many government benefits"
"But they didn't do their paperwork correctly"

frogbs, Thursday, 1 February 2018 13:27 (six years ago) link

btw how unsurprising that "THE LAW IS THE LAW" only applies until some redhatter decides, apropos of nothing, that said law was actually "unconstitutional" and therefore shouldn't count

Those two red-hatted guys are just so incredibly mean, and the woman in the back right ("I lost my eye") actually seems intent on enacting Hammurabi's Code at that particular moment.

she's kind of the perfect Republican isn't she? where "I went without healthcare for 15 years and lost an eye" is not an argument for universal healthcare but rather another reason why we ought to dehumanize brown people

frogbs, Thursday, 1 February 2018 14:13 (six years ago) link

Kimmel did a hell of a lot more to fight ACA repeal than just about any other celebrity, or politician for that matter. certainly I doubt he would have been so outspoken if he hadn't dealt with a medical calamity in his own family so recently but I don't recall him coming across as smug at any point. then again, I don't actually watch his show.

evol j, Thursday, 1 February 2018 14:15 (six years ago) link

It's interesting to see MAGA people backed into a corner. Instead of reflecting on the reason they believe they instead just get extremely stubborn because not backing down is all that matters. Their role model does not ever concede in any situation either. It's like arguing with a picket sign.

Evan, Thursday, 1 February 2018 14:19 (six years ago) link

xp don't forget that Bill Cassidy paraded around on talk shows claiming that any GOP health plan would absolutely pass the "Jimmy Kimmel test", then wrote a bill that would hit these kids' lifetime caps by the time they were 2 years old. I don't really see Jimmy Kimmel as a guy who wants to get political on his show, but come on.

frogbs, Thursday, 1 February 2018 14:30 (six years ago) link

Th only way to believe a lot of the things the MAGA crew believe is to almost compartmentalize and just hold tight to asshole convictions. Shit like "the law is the law" gives them cover, like Trump himself saying "I promised to do this awful thing when I was running, so I have no choice but to keep my promise."

"the law is the law!" stuff always makes me think of Kohlberg's stages of moral reasoning

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:50 (six years ago) link

reminds me of the term in moral philosophy, 'superstitious rule worship'

"The minute she came over the border, overstayed, whatever it was: illegal."

He's treating her as though, given that she's crossed into this other category, there's just nothing more to be said.

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:47 (six years ago) link

yea but like I mentioned - when Jimmy points out that she *is* legally here the one red hatter's immediate reaction is to say "well that was unconstitutional!" so...the law is the law, which is whatever I say it is

I find his comedy kind of smarmy, too, but is his political material really that smug? From the segments I've seen, it's pretty down to earth and grounded in common values and basic decency. Seemed much more approachable that like Colbert/Oliver/Meyers, guys who sorta sneer at anybody who doesn't share their worldview and mostly choir preach

xp is that guy funny, though? That line out of Andy Richter or Ed McMahon or whatever would have landed flat. Letterman used to run with this trope a lot, and more recently Chelsea Handler doubled down w/ a Mexican dwarf. I wouldn't find it so condescending if they gave these guys any good material, but basically they just nod and it brings the house down.
