yes, that's the second preset.

I like the buzzing and distortion - feels like it's part of the object; a clean stream of the audio wouldn't have the same substance.

Anyway, I have JtN to thank for mine; Ava (who is 2) likes a couple of loops (humming along) but hates the clangy ones but Tallulah (who is 11 weeks) is less discerning.

braveclub (braveclub), Friday, 19 January 2007 14:55 (seventeen years ago) link

oh yes i heard this and it's very good, atypical for imbalance somewhat because there's not as many piercing sharp tones, given the sample base. beats listening to new monolake records too.

Jena (JenaP), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

i got my girlfriend one for christmas and it was so cool i had to get myself one.

you can get high-quality WAVs of the 9 loops from the FM3 site, and they sound great, but the box itself is such an important part of the experience that i never listen to them

max (maxreax), Friday, 19 January 2007 16:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Mine's red. I keep it in the kitchen. I guess it's not mine, really. Bought it for my GF in the spring of 06. Anyway, it's amazing. I never get tired of it. Very nice for when cooking.

You play it for a while, and think, "God, I've heard this loop a billion times. Why doesn't it have more sounds?" Then you settle in and forget about it. The loop keeps nudging at your mind, at the peripheries of your attention. And then you notice it, and notice how wonderful it sounds. And then you forget. And then you notice again. Over and over and over and cetera. I think it's probably very good for your spiritual regimens. Or chopping vegetables, at least.

And mine does have a little Buddha inside! He's made of crystal and is very smiley. Emits faint pules of light as the loop cycles. Sometimes, he even talks to me. I can't understand what he says of course, 'cuz he's Chinese, but I have the idea that he's probably very wise. Particle Ranger got ripped off.

Look, what I want is this:

I want something that looks/works exactly like the FM3 Buddha, BUT...

I want it to have a radio reciver and a loop sampler. You set it to a station, and wait for divine guidance. When the hand of God touches you properly, you hit the magic button. The machine then samples a few seconds (random, maybe 5 - 10?) of the broadcast and puts them on infinite repeat.

It has a writable memory stash where you can hold, say, 10 of your best loops.

I've just received an email advertising a new Buddha Machine designed by Throbbing Gristle called 'Gristleism'! Anyone got one?

mmmm, Monday, 30 November 2009 18:39 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm on the fence about that, because the iPhone Buddha machine is so nice (has both v1 and v2 boxes in it).

I think I might have to break down though, I mean it's Throbbing Gristle! In a little diecut fascist box!

Duuuh, meant to say I'm hoping the Gristle box comes out as an app

Pre-shipping quality inspection of Chrome Gristleism units has revealed an unacceptable failure rate due to short-circuits caused by contact between components and the electroplated casing.

To ensure all Gristleism units function as designed, shipments of Chrome machines will be delayed while we re-assemble the units and eliminate the problem.

Therefore fans who purchased the limited-edition Tri-Box or chrome unit from the Throbbing Gristle Greedbag store should be aware that there will be a possible delay of up to a week in shipping.

We will update you as soon as we have more news on exact shipping dates for the Chrome machines.

i ordered the chrome one /:

I just googled this on the offchance you were talking about a Buddha machine full of Helios Creed guitar loops. Which I would have had to have had.

Been enjoying the black one, had to order red and chrome also to have them all in various stages of circuit bentness. Also Persuasion karaoke!

Speaking of which, the Buddha Machine 2.0 is ridiculously easy to alter to get the loops to slow down to ridiculous levels. Just need to add one resistor. Altering one of the original machines on the same basis, but once the audio gets down to a certain point it starts getting overwhelming interference.

This is pretty good too: http://www.flingcosound.com/theblackbox.html

How do y'all store yours so they don't get bizarrely sticky (old playstation thumbsticks seem to be be made of the same rubber and have the same problem)?
