The game gets a bit harder after you “beat the game.”
You also get access to harder refights of the bosses. Mario 64 pretty much nailed how 3D Mario should jump and move on the first try so it makes sense to me that this game, 5 or 6 3D Marios later, feels a lot like that one. The transformations are where the new wrinkles are and some of them are a whole lot of fun.

ah ok, i will have to dip back in.

one thing that bugged me was since i was playing handheld, the game kept prodding me to play nunchuk mode (climb faster! throw further! all with a flick of your wrist!) and i didn't want to and i was mad that i didn't get ot do all of those things

is it still called nunchuk mode if they're not attached? tonfa mode?

I have nothing but bored memories of this game

I feel like an idiot for playing it out instead of quitting and finishing SMG2 or Sunshine instead

with a year's distance i feel comfortable calling this my favorite mario game, though it's not way better than the other 3d ones, just enough better. it could definitely get galaxy 2'ed.

ciderpress, Friday, 4 January 2019 20:40 (five years ago) link

It also seems much easier (so far) than I remember previous Mario games being. None of the boss battles to date have been particularly taxing and most have been done on the first attempt.

what was the last Mario game that could be described as "difficult"? some of Sunshine's stuff was challenging but a lot of that was due to a wonky control scheme. I think Nintendo's philosophy is to make the main stuff easy and forgiving with some side challenges that are way harder

frogbs, Friday, 4 January 2019 20:43 (five years ago) link

Any tips on how to get the cap jumps and other tricks figured out? It seems like the game would be so much more fun if I could do that stuff.

DJI, Friday, 4 January 2019 20:48 (five years ago) link

There was some Luigi stuff in Galaxy 1 that I remember was excruciatingly hard, and Tick Tock Clock from 64 too. Parts of Odyssey got there, Dark Side Of The Moon especially.

Sunshine was the only Mario I can think of that was really crazy difficult, and mostly in those subspace levels. But I also like easy Mario inherently, never liked the idea of Mario going masocore.

Nhex, Saturday, 5 January 2019 02:23 (five years ago) link

idk I honestly rate this game slightly lower than SMB2 with its endless towers of chains and climbing, I found it excruciatingly tedious

Zelda Switch was my favourite in the series though, I'm a big fan of the system but Mario needs Big And Meaningful Goals not thousands of moons that you trip over

flamboyant goon tie included, Saturday, 5 January 2019 07:10 (five years ago) link

on the first play through this game didn’t do a lot for me, but recently i played through it for the fourth or fifth time (top of 804 moons, ~150 hrs in total). definitely more fun on repeated goes.

the one thing that doesn’t sit well with me (and honestly it’s a stretch, i don’t really care) is how some levels (new donk, cascades) can be so finely constructed and textured, and others (the lost world) look like duplo. it feels like 2–3 separate studios built their own levels and it was all chucked together at the end.

ten months pass...

Whenever Mario hits a wall during his rolling move in Super Mario Odyssey, he will assume a saddened expression for three frames at the moment of impact. This expression is not used in any of Mario's other animations. Here it is from various angles. pic.twitter.com/2QbJPfrjPR

OK, just started, and it seems like this game is going to be some good, dumb fun! I love how every PS4 game I've played so far seems designed by 14-year olds, and most Nintendo games seem designed by delirious 7-year olds. " ... and then he has a magic hat! And it talks to him! And has magic powers, and ... and you can turn into a dinosaur! And it has a mustache, too! And ... there's an evil turtle monster, and he wants to marry the princess, and ... "

It is the best

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 28 March 2020 18:18 (four years ago) link

It's ... ok. Feels kinda of weirdly slow, imo, but maybe that's just a matter of getting used to the controls.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 30 March 2020 16:12 (four years ago) link

this game rules, i think it was the first game i bought with the switch and we still play it fairly regularly (mainly because it's one of the few games the 5-year-old can play without assistance)

na (NA), Monday, 30 March 2020 16:14 (four years ago) link

I should take a day this weekend and just cruise through the main game again, a very pleasant experience for the most part.

silby, Monday, 30 March 2020 16:23 (four years ago) link

OK, I've played the early bits of this - I think I'm at Lake Kingdom next - and while I can't exactly say why, it's honestly kind of a slog. It feels like the kind of early release game that comes with a new system (right down to the mandatory "here's how you use your joy cons!" loading screen). Doesn't mean I won't play more (I've got nothing better to do) but it'll take some discipline. Tbf, the only Mario I've ever finished is the very first one when it came out, so while I have a nostalgic connection it's far from a nostalgic compulsion.

Doesn't seem lazy, though. There's lots of details and creativity at work, I just find the gameplay itself kind of tedious.

I keep trying to run and then I realize that I *am* running. (I think?)

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 3 April 2020 14:15 (four years ago) link

i definitely don't think it's a slog, but i do think it's possibly a _bit_ overrated *ducks*
as in, to me it's a 9.2 on the pitchfork scale, not a 9.9. easily best new music though.

Joey Corona (Euler), Friday, 3 April 2020 14:41 (four years ago) link

Josh do an experiment

Find an empty spot in a level and just stand there with your silliest available Mario outfit and just do jumps and ground pounds without really moving around, just get Mario hooting and hollering like an idiot and press those buttons and bounce around.

Does that delight you? If not you are a replicant.

one of my life achievements is intuitively fucking the shit out of that first frog with my mario butt within 2 minutes of starting

OK, so maybe you all have hit on something: I keep seeing them for sale, but I have no interest in buying or changing Mario outfits. I just don't care, you know? I do like Mario's silly mechanics, the hooting and hollering and stomping and other stuff, it's fun and cute (more cute than fun), but that's not really enough to sustain my interest. At least early on it hasn't helped that the bosses have been like "Strawberry Shortcake" level Saturday morning cartoon villains. I mean, these early baddies are basically annoying, extra garish Easter bunnies.

i am going to go ahead and strongly advise: do not ever play animal crossing

haha

go back to that frog and let it teach you the ways of mario

I'm going through Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U with my 5-year old son, it's a remarkably well-designed game

frogbs, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:05 (four years ago) link

did we ever figure out if that's getting remastered on the new switch collection thing, or is that going to be a separate standalone remaster?

let me be your friend on the other end! (Karl Malone), Friday, 3 April 2020 16:06 (four years ago) link

the reporting made it sound like SM3DWDX would be a standalone remaster

silby, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:09 (four years ago) link

there's no way to transfer that + New Super Mario Bros. U to the Switch is there? hate having 2 consoles hooked up but I'm not paying another $59.99 for this

frogbs, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:10 (four years ago) link

I'm a big Odyssey detractor, tbh! Lots of great moments, esp the climax of New Donk City stage, but the primary currency of the game (moons) is so grossly inflated that there is no feeling of accomplishment when you stumble over a random rock and A Moon Appears!

It's like if Zelda was focused solely on acquiring Korok seeds

I've been reading a few of "let's rank all the Mario games" articles recently and I'm frankly surprised to see the way people rank them-- any list that doesn't put 3. Super Mario World 2. Super Mario 64 1. Super Mario 3 as their top three is mysterious and bizarre to me

xxpost I *think* the Switch is pretty well locked down, but the system is new enough (and still under warranty enough, I think) that I don't want to mess with it just yet. I amassed a ton of games on an external drive for the Wii, but of course, there is no longer an easy way to hook my Wii to my TV, so so much for all that.

lol Korok seeds. I ended up absolutely loving that game, but off the top of my head I can't remember what the Korok seeds were used for. Buying things? Upgrading things? I know I never really made a point of searching for them unless I had to.

there's not, and you will, but you can always hope that Nintendo takes the Switch's success to heart and makes the whole library compatible with the Switch 2 in…2024 or whatever

despite me giving it a 9.2 pitchfork scale rating, in the pantheon of mario games it's probably like in the 5th-10th greatest range, for me. which to be clear, is still a great game imo

I think my main problem with Odyssey is that it rarely gives me the illusion that I'm really good at it.

lukas, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:49 (four years ago) link

xp frogbs I admit that I’m a 2d fan, in general, over 3d platforms. For me, the core of Mario perfection is about control, the platonic ideal of the Jump, and in general just feeling like I’m making Mario do the exact thing that I want him to do.

I get more of those good control feelings with 2d Mario. It’s still very good with 3D, but I find myself “missing” a lot more
