You can get some really fine vegetarian tapas here^^^ (yes, I live in the upper haight) and quite potent sangria. No reservations, so you just have to arrive at the right time or else wait an hour.

okay I draw the line at that place. ugh

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:37 (sixteen years ago) link

here are some places i scribbled down based on looking at vegdining.com - i think i actually ate at the golden era last time i was in town and they had some pretty radical fake chicken drumsticks:

- Ananda Fuara
- Bok Choy Garden
- Golden Era Vegetarian Restaurant
- Herbivore
- Millennium Restaurant
- Ike's Place
- Under dog
- Squat and Gobble

i might rule out squat and gobble based on the name.

homosexual II, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Squat and Gobble is a chain - okay but nothing special, and definitely not specifically vegetarian

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:43 (sixteen years ago) link

those liars!

homosexual II, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:45 (sixteen years ago) link

they have one of those generic chalkboard menus and everything is either a crepe or an omelette or a sandwich

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:46 (sixteen years ago) link

I avoid vegetarian asian restaurants, as a general rule. They all seem to be the same bland thing as far as I can tell. Squat and Gobble is good for vegetarian lunch/brunch: They have tofu scramble, pretty good salads, and vegan chili.

I went here a few weeks ago and I was impressed with the chili rellenos.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I really want to check that place out.

Michael White, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Mexico-DF was practically empty on the Thursday night I was there. The service was good and the food rich and reasonably interesting. They have these cheesy lighted paintings, though, which change every 15 minutes or so.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link

cheesy? more like classic.

homosexual II, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:02 (sixteen years ago) link

dude at Jay's cheesesteak ruined their veggie options for me by pointing out to me that they cook the veggie stuff over the same areas where they cook the meat, and they do the fries in lard, so it's not really veggie.

I think herbivore is pretty good, personally. It's not expensive and it's alright. but i go to the one in berkeley more than the ones in SF.

akm, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I tried to see how many places I could list off the top of my head. I came up with 86 in 10 minutes, including in wine country/marin. You may bestow my ribbon now.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:25 (sixteen years ago) link

CLUSTER!

dan selzer, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:28 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah I'm bummed I can't go to that

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Ananda Fuara is bleh.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:40 (sixteen years ago) link

their club sandwich is really good

akm, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:41 (sixteen years ago) link

All my vegetarian friends swear by the sandwiches at Love N Haight, though I've never had one.

Michael White, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 23:06 (sixteen years ago) link

is that the vietnamese place next to Noc-Noc?

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 23:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Is it Vietnamese? I've been in to pick up a sandwich for a friend, but I didn't notice anything Vietnamese about it. It is just down from Noc-Noc, though.

Michael White, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 23:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I thought they had like falafel and pizza and stuff

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 23:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Golden Era makes me sick. Cha Cha Cha is cool! My friend J works there and i always get fuckered up on sangria.

chaki, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 23:12 (sixteen years ago) link

huh - never heard of it. got some nice gear though. don't recognize anyone that's recorded there, makes me think they haven't been around for too long...? how'd you hear about 'em?

The guy who runs it is a friend of our drummer.

i'm going to be in SF this weekend & will have time to hang on sunday and at least part of monday, if anyone's up for a beer or brunch or something. (how is universal cafe?)

get bent, Friday, 15 February 2008 13:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I haven't been in ages, but their brunch used to be great as I recall.

Michael White, Friday, 15 February 2008 15:16 (sixteen years ago) link

That settles it. Next V-day I'm taking chaki to Cha Cha Cha instead of Shakey Mo.

libcrypt, Friday, 15 February 2008 17:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I'll be at Murio's getting shnockered.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 February 2008 18:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Murio's used to be my urinary heaven during prolonged Amoeba visits.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 18:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Off topic, but to anybody visiting the Exploratorium, definitely make an appointment to experience the Tactile Dome, an internal sculpture exhibit which people will feel but never see. The exhibit is encased in a geodesic dome about the size of a large weather balloon. Visitors enter through a light-lock room into a totally dark maze (path). Then, for an hour and fifteen minutes, they feel, bump, slide and crawl through and past hundreds of materials and shapes which blend, change and contrast.
