spiritual successor to Advance Wars by Chucklefish (Starbound is their previous notable game) since IS apparently abandoned that series to focus on fire emblem

oh, nice! i'll keep an eye out for it, thanks

or, turn-based strategy grid wargame with 4 differently-playing factions if the above doesnt mean anything to you
― ciderpress, Thursday, 24 January 2019 19:00 (five years ago) link
it does - i've played a few of the advance wars games, although it's been a while. in general, i really enjoy turn-based strategy grid games. i was really into Into The Breach for about a week, but then got very burned out/bored and never came back, so it'd be nice to start out with something else in the genre.
Dead Cells rules, by the way

personally i'm still waiting for their magic school life sim game
― ciderpress, Thursday, 24 January 2019 19:03 (five years ago) link
I am still playing Dead Cells, months onward. I got up to two boss cells, but felt frustrated with how many useless blueprints I'd unlocked (nothing really more frustrating than getting a L cursed sword or whatever) so I started again, and only unlocked the blueprints I like (Crusher, Ice Bow, Death Orb, that's basically it). Haven't beat tHotK beyond 0 boss cells, keep getting smacked at the end there, but getting better and better
― flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 24 January 2019 19:25 (five years ago) link
yeah, i've still only made it through a few of the bosses, haven't completed a runthrough yet. i agree on the blueprint frustration, though. i didn't realize at first that i shouldn't unlock the ones that i don't like using, because then the random melee/ranged/shield will occasionally select it for the starting gear.
in general though, i think it strikes a comfortable middleground between two styles of roguelikes - you can gradually improve/expand the selection of available gear and starting items like healing potions, which helps you gradually progress farther in the game. But there's also a very tangible feeling of natural improvement as you become familiar with enemy patterns and level layouts. i wonder how i'd do now, starting over with nothing unlocked, just based my higher level of skill.

I have attempted to do purple and red runs, but unless I go whole-hog on the purple upgrades (instead of some 7 18 7 eventuality) I find that my weapons aren't strong enough to really effectively take down the Hand before he hits, hits, hits, dead. And going full purple (4 24 4) means I'm made of paper. Green builds are the only ones I have had real success with, which is reliant upon finding a good legendary main weapon, as none of the green mains are worthwhile (except the Symmetrical Sword, which is great if you pair it with an Ice Bow).
My typical favourite build is full green (4 4 24 or thereabouts). I grab the best crusher + wolf trap, pair (typically) a non-legendary Ice Bow with a legendary main (my favourite is legendary Infantry Bow). My mutations are Tough Nut + Efficiency + Ammo (or something other than Ammo if I'm not using Ice Bow). I always speed run (Prison > Promenade > Ramparts > Bridge > Village > Sepulcher), grab every upgrade and chest but don't bother killing unnecessary enemies, and only start cleaning things out properly once I get the Sepulcher timed door. I never take a cursed chest except if my build is weak, and never take the one in Stilt Village (the teleporting slugs always get me if I do).

It is legitimately terrifying to do a purple build and get to the High Castle and see the wizards take down your health to half with one bullet, ugh
Oh, also, I modify my strategy based on how many ++ and S weapons I can find, those modifiers are far more valuable than the actual level of the weapon
I love "75% damage reduction from projectiles" so much too. Some players skip Elites entirely but I always make time for them, the wolf trap + crusher makes such short work of them
― flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 24 January 2019 20:13 (five years ago) link
so this sounds like a game i'd like!
― Mordy, Thursday, 24 January 2019 20:40 (five years ago) link
yeah, highly recommended. it's a game where you can totally nerd out on the character builds/stats/most powerful routes through the various levels, but you can also play it more casually and successfully as a action platformer
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 24 January 2019 20:45 (five years ago) link
Mordy I loved it at first but it kind of still snuck up on me as being One Of The Best Games I've Ever Played, I definitely think it'll improve loads with some of the promised DLC, really you'll love it, it's tough but fair
― flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 24 January 2019 20:47 (five years ago) link
but you can also play it more casually and successfully as a action platformer
that was a terrible sentence. i didn't mean to imply that it's more successful as a game when approached casually, i just meant it's very accessible and has a nice smooth learning curve
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 24 January 2019 20:49 (five years ago) link
yeah, dead cells owns. I've only played a few hours so far but early favourite builds have been centred around tactics (purple?)
― ||||||||, Thursday, 24 January 2019 20:59 (five years ago) link
i've also steered toward the purple/red builds so far. i tried shield/green for a while, but i have a terrible videogame weak spot for parrying. i suck at it, no matter the game. is it worth spending some time getting better with the shield, or does the green build lead to non-shield items that are fun?
― Karl Malone, Thursday, 24 January 2019 21:30 (five years ago) link
To be honest, I never used the shield ever for the longest time, but I found that having played the game for 100+ hours at this point, the rhythms of all the different monsters are like second-nature to me, and I didn't even need to train myself to be good at the shield, I just knew when to parry and it was working fine. I'm curious as to how efficacious one is against the Hand, maybe I should search that
― flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 24 January 2019 22:53 (five years ago) link
Oh but I still rarely if ever use one, unless I get some wildly overpowered Assault Shield toward the end
― flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 24 January 2019 22:54 (five years ago) link
you & me both buddy!!!
i have not played for even heard of dead cells but i have enjoyed this reminder of who much i like reading people talking a highly-specific ways about playing video games and video game strategy

Here's a really enjoyable video of somebody taking down the Hand at 3 boss cells using only shields and tonics:

i have a physical copy of dead cells coming to me because .. i forget why i thought it was necessary. somehow it legitimated the idea of investing time in it, should i find myself doing so. i don’t think i can justify that.

xpost Jesus, how bad must things be when in the almost 2 years since they first announced the game, not only has there been nothing revealed but a (tentative?) title but Metroid 4 production has been totally scrapped and started anew?

― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 January 2019 14:22 (five years ago) link
whatever they had retro working on that was important enough to not give them metroid from the start, hopefully

Josh there’s a big AAA on the horizon for you it’s called breath of the wild you don’t need to wait long you can even cook in-game

Well, on the plus side "Spider-man" is not nearly as taxing as something like "Dark Souls," so maybe I'll be able to play it and Zelda concurrently. There's time for cauliflower experiments, too, especially since it's -7 outside right now.
