tuomas: listen to "in the house of yes"

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:09 (five years ago) link

I wanted to like the 1975's new record but couldn't make it through the first listen

davey, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:10 (five years ago) link

yeah i kinda think so too, the s/t drops off a tiny bit in the second half imo

xxp

my tweet portal is whack (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:10 (five years ago) link

last one for the day!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:11 (five years ago) link

salt wasn't as immediate as the s/t but it's the better record

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:11 (five years ago) link

correct!

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:11 (five years ago) link

Last one?! Don't we go down to 51?

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:11 (five years ago) link

lol I'm just now getting to Smoko. You guys there are 12 million songs released in 2018 better than this.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:12 (five years ago) link

tuomas: listen to "in the house of yes"

I tried this, and I really like the basic disco groove and the vocals, but the arrangement is way too loaded! Why do they need to have all those extra sounds there, like the weird scratching? Just trust what you have!

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:12 (five years ago) link

going to 45 today. to 29 tomorrow. final 13 on friday.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:13 (five years ago) link

that is a new breakdown but i can dig it

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:13 (five years ago) link

xpost Guess I'll have to give Salt another go. I feel like I'm really missing out. I just played the S/T this morning and it sounded so good.

Might be one of the best retro 80s synthpop songs of all time. great video too! <3 the Cronenberg phone cases. – Adam Bruneau

Me and Michael wouldn't sound out of place on an old school M83 record. - Ross

Last one?? Save us, Johnny Fever!

Oh wait

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:14 (five years ago) link

MGMT placing twice is pretty wild but "Me and Michael" is pretty undeniable

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:14 (five years ago) link

this is gonna be a big year for repeat appearances

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:15 (five years ago) link

Lol, I guess ILX never stops loving sad photocopy synthpop!

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:15 (five years ago) link

MGMT really went in on the videos this time around

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:16 (five years ago) link

'Jaipur' was one of my votes, it's gorgeous.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:16 (five years ago) link

see what happens when Cut Copy stops releasing new albums

frogbs, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:17 (five years ago) link

Hopefully the title track will make it as well, as it's the best of the lot.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:18 (five years ago) link

me and michael is lots of fun, love the funfetti synth sounds

my tweet portal is whack (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:18 (five years ago) link

I don't rate this song at all btw but they pastiche cronenberg well

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:18 (five years ago) link

and the mutated harmony between the synth line and vocal melody

my tweet portal is whack (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:19 (five years ago) link

should be noted that the video of 2000 elefanten isn’t the best way to hear the song because that stretch of dead air in the middle really kills it

the one thing I've been gathering from this list so far is that ILX really loves deadpan, disaffected vocals

frogbs, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:20 (five years ago) link

This is me and my gf's song this year (guess why) and would usually be right up my street but i still didnt feel like throwing it a vote

or something, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:21 (five years ago) link

Ha, I actually thought this was pretty effective.

ok i feel confident tentatively recommending salt to you, spend some time with it

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:23 (five years ago) link

might end up using this year's results as an excuse to kickstart an actual poll on instituting a one-track-per-artist limit as opposed to just whining about it again

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:23 (five years ago) link

xpost
is your name michael?

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:23 (five years ago) link

Got it in one

or something, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:24 (five years ago) link

how would that work Simon?

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:24 (five years ago) link

Most of us probably did vote one track per artist, but enough people voted for different tracks by some artists that they all made it in?

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:25 (five years ago) link

the one thing I've been gathering from this list so far is that ILX really loves deadpan, disaffected vocals
It's been the same for years and years, no? The backing tracks and genre sounds may change but the ennui remains the same. It's one of the reasons I'm always so negative in these poll threads, cos I don't really like that kind of singing at all... But it seems music geeks tend to go for cool and dispassionate over heartfelt and corny.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:26 (five years ago) link

Warning, this Mr. Twin Sister song is not a cover of the still stunningly beautiful after all these years "Jaipur" by Mountain Goats

https://youtu.be/CMe06gXIPHA

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:26 (five years ago) link

The highest vote getter per artist places, all others by said artist are dq'ed. Sounds easy. xps

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:27 (five years ago) link

I don't even remember the earlier Mr Twin Sister track, but "Jaipur" is really good, probably the best new-to-me track so far

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:28 (five years ago) link

Mr. Twin Sister's "Jaipur" really makes apparent the continuity with the earlier records by this band, when they were called "Swing Out Sister"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:29 (five years ago) link

okay I’m back to hating mgmt again now, that one is fucking ghastly, order is restored unto to the world

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:29 (five years ago) link

The highest vote getter per artist places, all others by said artist are dq'ed

Yep. With the full results and "pure" placements shared after the poll is done, ideally.

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:29 (five years ago) link

I don't like that myself but see what the people think

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:30 (five years ago) link

so if I vote for ten 1975 songs, only one of those ten votes counts? tbc, I would also prefer no repeats, just trying to think through how this would affect the poll

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:30 (five years ago) link

let's save this discussion for the poll

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:31 (five years ago) link

ok

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:31 (five years ago) link

tbh if applied to this poll it would kill Geyser, which I am slightly loath to accept tbh as I prefer it to Nobody and it's here on merit

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:31 (five years ago) link

here's an idea: every year we do a best of the 80s poll simultaneous to the EOY poll so y'all can get this shit out of your system

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:32 (five years ago) link

I'm also someone who preferred the previous Mr. Twin Sister album, but I'll have to give Salt another chance. I do think that "Keep on Mixin'" is a great lead-off track (love the polyrhythmic beat), and "Jaipur" sounded nice just now in the poll playlist.
