I don't rate this song at all btw but they pastiche cronenberg well

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:18 (five years ago) link

and the mutated harmony between the synth line and vocal melody

my tweet portal is whack (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:19 (five years ago) link

should be noted that the video of 2000 elefanten isn’t the best way to hear the song because that stretch of dead air in the middle really kills it

the one thing I've been gathering from this list so far is that ILX really loves deadpan, disaffected vocals

frogbs, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:20 (five years ago) link

This is me and my gf's song this year (guess why) and would usually be right up my street but i still didnt feel like throwing it a vote

Ha, I actually thought this was pretty effective.

emil.y, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:22 (five years ago) link

I tried this, and I really like the basic disco groove and the vocals, but the arrangement is way too loaded! Why do they need to have all those extra sounds there, like the weird scratching? Just trust what you have!

ok i feel confident tentatively recommending salt to you, spend some time with it

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:23 (five years ago) link

might end up using this year's results as an excuse to kickstart an actual poll on instituting a one-track-per-artist limit as opposed to just whining about it again

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:23 (five years ago) link

xpost
is your name michael?

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:23 (five years ago) link

Got it in one

or something, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:24 (five years ago) link

how would that work Simon?

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:24 (five years ago) link

Most of us probably did vote one track per artist, but enough people voted for different tracks by some artists that they all made it in?

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:25 (five years ago) link

It's been the same for years and years, no? The backing tracks and genre sounds may change but the ennui remains the same. It's one of the reasons I'm always so negative in these poll threads, cos I don't really like that kind of singing at all... But it seems music geeks tend to go for cool and dispassionate over heartfelt and corny.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:26 (five years ago) link

Warning, this Mr. Twin Sister song is not a cover of the still stunningly beautiful after all these years "Jaipur" by Mountain Goats

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:26 (five years ago) link

The highest vote getter per artist places, all others by said artist are dq'ed. Sounds easy. xps

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:27 (five years ago) link

I don't even remember the earlier Mr Twin Sister track, but "Jaipur" is really good, probably the best new-to-me track so far

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:28 (five years ago) link

Mr. Twin Sister's "Jaipur" really makes apparent the continuity with the earlier records by this band, when they were called "Swing Out Sister"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:29 (five years ago) link

okay I’m back to hating mgmt again now, that one is fucking ghastly, order is restored unto to the world

Yep. With the full results and "pure" placements shared after the poll is done, ideally.

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:29 (five years ago) link

I don't like that myself but see what the people think

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:30 (five years ago) link

so if I vote for ten 1975 songs, only one of those ten votes counts? tbc, I would also prefer no repeats, just trying to think through how this would affect the poll

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:30 (five years ago) link

let's save this discussion for the poll

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:31 (five years ago) link

ok

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:31 (five years ago) link

tbh if applied to this poll it would kill Geyser, which I am slightly loath to accept tbh as I prefer it to Nobody and it's here on merit

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:31 (five years ago) link

here's an idea: every year we do a best of the 80s poll simultaneous to the EOY poll so y'all can get this shit out of your system

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:32 (five years ago) link

I'm also someone who preferred the previous Mr. Twin Sister album, but I'll have to give Salt another chance. I do think that "Keep on Mixin'" is a great lead-off track (love the polyrhythmic beat), and "Jaipur" sounded nice just now in the poll playlist.

jaymc, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:33 (five years ago) link

If you're voting for 10 tracks by the same artist, may I interest you in the albums poll?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:33 (five years ago) link

if y'all are having this conversation now i'd like to suggest it should've happened in 2013 or whenever vampire weekend had like thirty tracks in the 77

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:34 (five years ago) link

from a record i liked!

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:34 (five years ago) link

I never vote for tracks that appear on albums I vote for, but that's me.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:34 (five years ago) link

I've probably been suggesting this every year since around then lol

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link

so that would boot out like, 15 songs, give or take? what's the #92 result look like in terms of votes and such?

there'd definitely a strategic element to this, for example "Music is Worth Living For" was not my favorite song on the AWK album but I ranked it higher b/c I knew it was more likely to place than say, "Break the Curse"

frogbs, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link

I almost never have any tracks/albums overlap, but I made a couple exceptions this year

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link

xp
I mean I wouldn't personally do that, I was just thinking of hypotheticals. I am genuinely confused by people who see two tracks by one artist place and think "I hope [track #3] places too"

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link

I never vote for tracks that appear on albums I vote for, but that's me.

iirc, the Lex was a stickler for this, too

jaymc, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:37 (five years ago) link

OK, this Talaboman track is great, I'm a sucker for things that should be boring but somehow never stop growing on me for 11 minutes (the repeated ping in this case)

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:37 (five years ago) link

cool as it is atm imo

nxd, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:37 (five years ago) link

I don't like loads of repetition of acts but I'd dislike popular tracks getting the boot more.

emil.y, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:38 (five years ago) link

emil.y has it

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:38 (five years ago) link

a true testament to the 70s german scene

“2000 Elefanten” got me to play some Malaria just now, early 80s German scene, close enough I guess.

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:38 (five years ago) link

also, refusing to vote for tracks by an artist you've voted for in the albums poll is insanity imo

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:39 (five years ago) link

I use the lex/Alfred rule as a way to cut down my tracks ballot, but I always end up making a couple of exceptions

rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

I have too much love to give to spend it all on under 48 or so artists

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

(And now I’m playing “2000 Elefanten” again. Very cool track. Will check out the album)

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

ya i vote for my favorite things and sometimes my favorite big things have favorite little things in them

suggest boban (Will M.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

i mean, i did tbf cut tropical fuck storm and daphne & celeste out of my tracks ballot because i'm more invested in the album as a whole, but there were some artists where i just could not avoid voting for them in both polls and to do so would have defied my year in music

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:42 (five years ago) link

would've been weird if DNA placed last yea, but not Humble

my tweet portal is whack (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:44 (five years ago) link

*year

But what if the artist is Wizkid?

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:47 (five years ago) link

I'll start a poll once both rollouts are done. let's reconvene on the subject then
