album is solid! I always like when seemingly flash-in-the-pan acts turn out to have some longevity

I never vote for tracks that appear on albums I vote for, but that's me.

breastcrawl otm
Most of the artists I root for these days release tons of great singles but v few albums.

If only the highest song places and the others are disqualified I don't see how it resolves vote-splitting.
If there's no consensus that's it. Placing several songs is actually a good sign.
+1 at not voting for album tracks being madness.
Every time I come back to this thread and press on "skipping...", I automatically land on Andrew WK giving me thumbs up :s

Hop Along was my #2, super happy to see it place

josh az (2011nostalgia), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:13 (five years ago) link

I think the only way to artificially reduce track possibilities is through nominations: don't give 40 nominations per user, force them to be disciplined.

Nabozo, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:13 (five years ago) link

It doesn't seem to be on Youtube, can I listen to it anywhere without having to sign up for a streaming service?

top three for today is something like (having not heard Autechre but I can tell what kind of thing it is and it'll be a fine from me n' all):

46: Mr. Twin Sister – “Jaipur”
54: Talaboman – “Dins El Llit (Superpitcher Remix)”
60: Cardi B featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin – “I Like It”

Worst had to be Smoko. Sounded like lj was responsible for this?

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:26 (five years ago) link

would have still made the 77 without my 6 points

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:27 (five years ago) link

I like that Hop Along song but voted for "Somewhere a Judge" instead.

jaymc, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:27 (five years ago) link

I would definitely support curtailing nominations to max of 20 overall or fewer.

If an album has 5+ nominations, you could do a short poll to narrow it down to 1 or 2.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:28 (five years ago) link

I’m opposed to this curating/curtailing of nominations. Let a thousand flowers bloom (or wither, whatever the case may be).

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:32 (five years ago) link

Reducing individual nominations won't reduce vote-splitting. It will make it a lot harder for people like me, who can't rely on anyone else to nominate things they like.

emil.y, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:33 (five years ago) link

lol yeah this is gonna be the 4th year in the row where either 0 or 1 of my song choices make it :)

gotta say, while there was more stuff i liked today, there was also more stuff i outright disliked. naming no names here but sheesh isn't it wonderful how diverse all our tastes are

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 20:58 (five years ago) link

Even in that context it makes sense: there’s only 77 left when everything is said and done.

I also liked y'day's lineup more than today's, just personal taste...

i stan corrected (morrisp), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:06 (five years ago) link

idk that my taste really adds to the conversation but there was a lot that failed to move me today. everything i liked i had already heard and p much everything i hadn't heard was rly boring to me. as i say, diff't strokes. all good. my music taste is completely fucked-up on instant melodic gratification and overstimulated progge antics so i find a lot of things boring that might be accurately described by others as 'a jam'

mind you wtf were the kim petras and autechre songs doing here lol

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:14 (five years ago) link

might end up using this year's results as an excuse to kickstart an actual poll on instituting a one-track-per-artist limit as opposed to just whining about it again

― resident hack (Simon H.)

I think I also chipped in a similar idea in some thread I don’t remember. The point was to get 77 different main artists on the countdown (feature credits get a pass) and only the most voted song per artist makes it, you can still vote for whichever song of the artist you like but only one gets represented... This to get a more varied poll.

So per example in 2014, a year with 5 Taylor Swift singles in the top 77 you get:

6. TAYLOR SWIFT - Style (620 points, 19 votes)

And maybe either post the real top 77 at the end in text form with repeat artists as it is right now or if you want to discuss all songs on the top 77 in the moment add them as a secondary info inside the main winner from the artist as a mini ranking of their songs inside the top 77 like say:

6. TAYLOR SWIFT - Style (620 points, 19 votes)
- Blank Space (515 points, 15 votes)
- Out of the Woods (469 points, 12 votes)
- Shake it Off (345 points, 11 votes)
- Bad Blood (322 points, 8 votes

Something like that...

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:21 (five years ago) link

I didn't vote but I've been listening to the playlist; I hope everyone who voted for Die Wilde Jagd also checked out FACS last year:

GDPR vs GAPDY (DJP), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:23 (five years ago) link

Otherwise you have to make the cut since the nom phase and that just seems like too much trouble. I’d leave the current system as is and just present the results differently...

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:25 (five years ago) link

if you want 77 artists on a poll, then like why not just... nominate/vote for artist(s) of the year

suggest boban (Will M.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:26 (five years ago) link

I also think that artificially culling results so you limit each artist to one appearance undermines the entire idea of doing a poll and at that point we should just pick a random poster to curate a listening experience and deem that the best-of list instead of asking everyone to contribute time and energy into deciding what their favorite songs of the year were and then jettisoning 30% of them because a couple of well-known/well-loved artists released a bunch of stuff that the voters like.

GDPR vs GAPDY (DJP), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:29 (five years ago) link

i strongly dislike 1 track per artist limit. feel like there has to be a more nuanced solution if it's even a problem

ciderpress, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:29 (five years ago) link

FACS was pretty cool!

DJP otm

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:30 (five years ago) link

xxp I agree; it sounds more "varied," but also less representative and reflective of heavy-hitting artists' impact that year. If there had been a poll using that system in 1984 (for example), only one track from Purple Rain would have been allowed to appear? Seems kind of weird.

i stan corrected (morrisp), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:30 (five years ago) link

suggestion for the poll: my mixtape should be #1 this year bc its hot fire

lmao I always forget how attached people are to The Purity Of The Stats. more artists is just more fun imho

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:30 (five years ago) link

It's not The Purity Of The Stats so much as it is Why Bother Having A Poll If You're Going To Fuck With The Results To Make It Fit What You Want It To Look Like Anyway

GDPR vs GAPDY (DJP), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:32 (five years ago) link

because repeats are boring

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:36 (five years ago) link

that said, I do not expect this measure to pass

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:36 (five years ago) link

The #77 track this year received 6 votes; presumably, if you started culling repeats, tracks would be entering the bottom of the countdown that only got a few votes each (or there may even need to be a tiebreaker btw. a bunch of single-vote tracks)...

i stan corrected (morrisp), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:38 (five years ago) link

...which is fine if it's less boring, but then it's not really serving the purpose of a consensus poll(?)

i stan corrected (morrisp), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 21:39 (five years ago) link

Hahaha I mean the stats don’t change, in my proposed system the stats would remain... it just starts in whichever number the repear artists pushed down the number so let’s assume the only repear artist for 2014 was Taylor Swift.

We start in number 81, the TS songs with their actual rankings wont appear until the highest TS song appears. Like so:

6. TAYLOR SWIFT - Style (620 points, 19 votes)
- 10. Blank Space (515 points, 15 votes)
- 12. Out of the Woods (469 points, 12 votes)
- 23. Shake it Off (345 points, 11 votes)
- 42. Bad Blood (322 points, 8 votes)

So in the actual results 43 jumps to 41 and you’re left guessing which artist and song it is until their song with most points appear. When the TS extravaganza appears then you get to talk about how much you love her and those 5 songs in the meantime you get 4 songs outside the top 77 to discuss.. yay!

I mean for me it sounds more fun because I don’t want to discuss TS 5 diferrent times in a poll and we get to hear and discuss songs outside the top 77. I know I can listen to songs 81-78 when the poll’s over but I like reading the passionate hate they inspire in here too.
