i was trying literally any of them

i read somewhere that if a device isn't your 'primary' console then you need an internet connection. i had mine stolen a while back. i dissociated that one from my account and got a new one, so i'm really hoping this isn't going to be some weird legacy

gbx, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:29 (five years ago) link

all the games i've downloaded throw up a load screen that says 'checking if the software can be played,' which i assumed was firmware-related but now seems to be a DRM check

gbx, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:31 (five years ago) link

oh right weird. did you go thru Nintendo customer service to do that or just use some function in their account system? it might still have yr new one designated as secondary

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:33 (five years ago) link

and yeah that's the same message it throws up if you preload a game that isn't out yet and try to run it

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:35 (five years ago) link

jfc -- i deregistered the old one remotely before setting up the new one and it's still showing the new one as not the primary console.

gbx, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:51 (five years ago) link

i tried deregistering again and it says you can't do it more than once a year

gbx, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:54 (five years ago) link

prob have to get Nintendo customer service to fix it for you then

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:57 (five years ago) link

infuriating

gbx, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:59 (five years ago) link

:(

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 17:59 (five years ago) link

Nintendo still kinda sucks at accounts, internet, everything other than making games and hardware

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:00 (five years ago) link

Their os’s are so weirdly bad

Mordy, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:04 (five years ago) link

i like how lightweight the switch one is, it boots instantly, but it's coming at the expense of desirable features

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:33 (five years ago) link

the Switch OS has all the features I need: boots instantly, allows me to click on games

Norm’s Superego (silby), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:35 (five years ago) link

Nintendo account system is a confusing mess, but for what it is worth the one time I had to deal with customer service regarding the same they were super nice and helpful, even though it took a long time to straighten things out.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:35 (five years ago) link

the wii tho so bad

Mordy, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:36 (five years ago) link

The Wii U OS made me nostalgic for the Wii OS

Norm’s Superego (silby), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:26 (five years ago) link

EG war groove review was quite muted

||||||||, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 20:17 (five years ago) link

it's advance wars with a couple neat tweaks and the ability to push balance patches, I don't need it to be an eye-opening evolution of advance wars

Norm’s Superego (silby), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 20:32 (five years ago) link

What are the "desirable features" you'd want? My only other experience is the PS3, which was so bad it actively made me not want to turn it on as a form of protest. (That's not to mention the whole YLOD thing - a console that doesn't even want to be used! Insane.) I like the Switch fine.

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 20:40 (five years ago) link

folders/organization mainly. if you have a lot of games the only way to view them afaict is a giant grid of tiles

themes would be fun too but i can live without cosmetic stuff like that

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 20:56 (five years ago) link

slay the spire looks good

||||||||, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 22:32 (five years ago) link

its very good based on watching friends play it. the new steamworld game looks to be a deckbuilder as well

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 22:36 (five years ago) link

Slay the spire is great fun

Mordy, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 22:39 (five years ago) link

Been getting into Slay the Spire a lot. My after work routine for the last week has been roll a J, drink tea, play StS for a hour. Being not good doesn't affect how much I love the gameplay - I've got to the 2nd boss only once and died fairly quickly. Stringing a streak of cards together so the effects multiply into a massive whooping is incredibly satisfying.

I haven't gotten into deck-builders before, they always seemed such faff. Having to play Gwent was (on of) my least favourite bit of Witcher 3. Have I judged the genre unfairly, or is StS just next level?

closed beta (NotEnough), Thursday, 31 January 2019 09:37 (five years ago) link

sts is exceptional but i do like the genre in general

Mordy, Thursday, 31 January 2019 13:02 (five years ago) link

gwent isnt really a deckbuilder iirc

i don't know of any other games besides StS that implement the deckbuilder thing well in a video game, theres a ton of tabletop ones though and some are good

dead cells is so good

the ghost of tom, choad (thomp), Sunday, 3 February 2019 04:58 (five years ago) link

How does Dead Cells compare to Rogue Legacy? seems like some pretty similar ideas at first glance

thomasintrouble, Monday, 4 February 2019 15:11 (five years ago) link

same general concept with better gameplay and visual style afaict

ciderpress, Monday, 4 February 2019 15:17 (five years ago) link

Bought Dead Cells for my nephew back in october and his switch profile says he's played for < 2 hrs! Looking for a polite way to ask for it back, suggestions welcome.

JimD, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:23 (five years ago) link

"Can I borrow it?"

Then bank on his current disinterest corresponding directly to the likelihood that he ever asks to have it back.

Evan, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:25 (five years ago) link

Trade him a crappy game for it!

Karl Malone, Monday, 4 February 2019 19:42 (five years ago) link

In fairness there are games I've owned for 10 years and have played for < 2 hrs and still somehow believe I'll get back to at some point, so maybe I should cut him some slack.

JimD, Monday, 4 February 2019 20:03 (five years ago) link

my daughter plays splatoon 2 and she bought the octo expansion with her allowance, but it doesn't work. apparently amazon sold us the european region version of splatoon 2 and the expansion only works with the north american region version. guessing there's no way around this right? it sucks because she was really excited for it.

na (NA), Monday, 11 February 2019 15:26 (five years ago) link

ime, even though amazon is a terrible company, whenever i have a problem with an order, any sort of problem, even when it's totally my fault, they just refund it or fix it. no questions asked.

but maybe it's different with videogames?

Karl Malone, Monday, 11 February 2019 16:03 (five years ago) link

yeah we should try that since they're the ones that fucked up. it's annoying because it was a xmas present so we ordered it like three months ago at this point

na (NA), Monday, 11 February 2019 16:12 (five years ago) link

is it a digital download code or a physical copy? i'm probably overestimating what amazon can do, but if it's a download i bet they could have it all fixed by this afternoon. i've seriously never been turned down whenever i've contacted them about a fuckup (either on my end or theirs), and whether i do it by the chatbot thing or a phone call. they mess up in many ways, but they have a pretty decent customer service policy

Karl Malone, Monday, 11 February 2019 16:19 (five years ago) link

also, i'm guessing that they deal with region-specific issues pretty frequently so there's probably even an actual policy that they have for dealing with it that their customer service already knows about

Karl Malone, Monday, 11 February 2019 16:20 (five years ago) link

yeah Amazon will do whatever it takes because they are not actually trying to make a profit lol

rob, Monday, 11 February 2019 16:39 (five years ago) link

well turns out we ordered from wal-mart, not amazon so ... ???
thanks for the advice

na (NA), Monday, 11 February 2019 16:49 (five years ago) link

Maybe Wal-Mart is also a company that secretly has good customer service?? *prays to the corporate overlords*

mario maker 2 !

||||||||, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 22:01 (five years ago) link

oh hell yeah. i missed out on the first one because i didn't have the right system, but i'd be up for a switch sequel for sure.

for those that played the original - was the fun more in making your own silly levels, or playing cool content that others made?

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 22:05 (five years ago) link

i would want to make a level that involves a very long fall through a nearly bottomless pit, and then share it with my nephew. he spends hours playing these custom minecraft levels that are nothing but very long drops into a hole. kinda weird but runs in the family

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 22:06 (five years ago) link

yoshi looks charming

||||||||, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 22:19 (five years ago) link

Yoshi World looks like the Return of Kirby Best Fwends.
