If another 1975 track places and Blackpink don't make it I'm changing my vote on Simon's poll.

Or possibly just taking the site down forever, heh.

emil.y, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:15 (five years ago) link

Fairly sure this will be it for Robyn on this list. I voted for Because It's In The Music which has been my highlight since day one. I think I'm on my own with that one.

bass really does sound fantastic on this and it's even better coming after the preceding two tracks on the album

no way are blackpink making it though, i don't think there was much love for ddu-du ddu-du from the thread

ufo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:16 (five years ago) link

just mercifully discovered I've left the house without my earphones

But... it bangs. Almost nothing from this poll bangs. I NEED BANG.

It was hard to narrow down tracks from the Robyn album, the whole thing is very much of a piece. I thought this was the statement song and the best one, for that matter. Though I did vote for a couple others.

omar little, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:18 (five years ago) link

at a guess, this is another eight and a half minutes of exquisite minimal moodz

imago, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:19 (five years ago) link

I like Honey more than I like the album, if that makes sense.

I liked Octo Octa better than Eris Drew. Is that pic from The Wicker Man ?

Nabozo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:19 (five years ago) link

"honey" has a really excellent video

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:20 (five years ago) link

I love the 1975 but "I always wanna die" and "give yourself a try" seem a little superfluous on this list. the other two that will almost certainly place are much more my idea of the sorts of songs that should place on year-end tracks lists, and also happen to be insanely good, so buckle up ILM

also is it normal historically for there to be such a small difference in votes between the songs in the high 70s (6 votes for #77) and in the low 20s (8 votes for #23)? how was turnout this year compared to other years?

k3vin k., Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:20 (five years ago) link

eris drew was my no. 1 vote

geoffreyess, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:22 (five years ago) link

Turnout was up a little from last year, but last year was the all-time low, I think? Number of votes doesn't matter so much as placement, I'd imagine.

xxxp

Many many xps: I've had a cunt of a day; the Mlindo album is perfect. Thanks, ilx.

And the waves come in and they're golden
But down in the deep, the honey is sweeter
And the sun sets on the water
But down in the deep, the current is stronger

i've had that in my head a lot these past few months

omar little, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:22 (five years ago) link

xps turnout was a little up from last year but compared to last year the points haven't really started jumping yet - last year's #22 was 286 points and 11 votes for example and this year fell behind in comparison a while ago

ufo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:23 (five years ago) link

Getting a vague Italo Kruder & Dorfmeister vibe from the Eris Drew remix. Feels nice.

agree with this, my fav song was Send To Robyn Immediately, which I'm pretty sure I voted for

my robyn vote was for the album (natch) and "Between the Lines"

Love “Honey”, song + album. I’ve never been a Triple A Robyn stan, but she got me this time. The album was my #5, I think.

breastcrawl, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:25 (five years ago) link

My vote was for “baby forgive me”

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:26 (five years ago) link

i'm glad that so many are getting into the Mlindo album, wasn't expecting it to happen in this thread where he hasn't even placed though lol

and yeah "Hold Me" rules

ufo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:26 (five years ago) link

i'm guessing "missing u" isn't showing up seeing how badly the vote must be split

ufo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:26 (five years ago) link

Speaking of forgiveness, I forgive you for ruining the poll all of you 1975 stans.

i've always *liked* Robyn but never was 100% onboard, but this one was one i loved so much i might have to go back to her earlier work and see what i missed.

omar little, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:27 (five years ago) link

xps re: Mlindo: I know 'it's not even on RYM!' isn't a signifier of very much, but it's not even on RYM!

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:28 (five years ago) link

going back to Robyn's earlier work after Honey was disappointing, a fair few great singles but not any great albums

ufo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:28 (five years ago) link

i think the mlindo album is the first time i've actually encountered something not being on rym

ufo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:29 (five years ago) link

i'll be disappointed if the weakest track on the robyn album shows up but i guess it *was* the lead single

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:29 (five years ago) link

The afropop voters kind of make up for it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:30 (five years ago) link

ufo: try the royskopp/Robyn "Do It Again" EP!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:30 (five years ago) link

Also xps: TOOTIME fitted weirdly well in the middle of the Mlindo record. Give Yourself A Try is like the Postal Service sung by Roddy Woomble. I mean this in an entirely positive way.

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:30 (five years ago) link

i'm bummed that not only did i not have the time to commit to helping run this year's poll, i didn't even make the time to submit a ballot, but damn, Moka is putting my meager design skills to shame; beautiful work, Moka! and forks is outdoing even himself w/ the pull-quotes and organization. well done to both, as well as the mastermind Seandalai.

2018 was a year that i spent time with as little new music as i have in any year since adolescence, which is sorta sad, but means this poll is even more fun than usual. its kind of funny how late january/early february sort of has a *sound* for me now, like oh yeah the 4th and 5th week of the year always sound like perfect pop, tasteful indie, lush dance music, killer afrobeats, rap bangers, and one or two weird things LJ gets up on a table and screams about, etc

lol @ the one non-1975, non-mitski song i listened to the most on the rollout so far was smoko 8-)´

if anyone is like me and prefers a spotify list that has #77 at the top and #1 at the bottom, I made one: https://open.spotify.com/user/thuggishruggish/playlist/2cjsGLFcKtcleMKdXvE8oH?si=2fTOjDyETQGn9L2YfVPfrw

i also made a gallery for all of Moka's pretty images: https://imgur.com/a/LS0Sm17

my guess for #78: luxury themes

gr8080, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:32 (five years ago) link

oh i wasn't thinking about the collaborative EPs from a few years ago when i said that (they slipped my mind for some reason), i really do love Love Is Free (super underrated imo) and Do It Again is solid too

ufo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:32 (five years ago) link

Yay for Eris Drew! I know I was complaining about grunge earlier, but this kind of '90s revivalism I can get behind! Now, if we only we got the Shy FX track too for the proper breakbeat return, but that's probably wishful thinking.

That would be my pick from it too - didn't vote for it tho mainly as didn't really get more than one listen of the album in until this year

oh yeah the 4th and 5th week of the year always sound like perfect pop, tasteful indie, lush dance music, killer afrobeats, rap bangers, and one or two weird things LJ gets up on a table and screams about, etc

lmao perfect assessment of the 77 vibe

would also welcome more #78 speculation

i think i voted for powerglide cuz i like 666 mafia also honey is so good

i'm both a 1975 obsessive and an afropop voter so where does that leave me

"this is america" at #78 would be fitting?
