I guess at this point in my life I'm completely out of loop when it comes to pop music, cos I have no idea what "This Is America" is?

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:40 (five years ago) link

not a banger but "slow burn" sounds like a million bucks

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:40 (five years ago) link

Kacey Musgraves is the definition of good taste.

Nabozo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:40 (five years ago) link

What's the most perfect 78 ever? I remember Rolling In The Deep getting that particular honour one year.

Matt DC, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:40 (five years ago) link

Tuomas, "This is America" is the latest Kings of Leon single

It's a music video. Look it up on YT.

pomenitul, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:41 (five years ago) link

There's a chord change in the chorus to Slow Burn that gets me every time. The rest of the record didn't stick with me but that's the keeper.

Are you Finnish ? I've been told there's a lot of trees between Helsinki and Sami land. Maybe moss and rocks too. :)

Nabozo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:42 (five years ago) link

Going back something Matt DC said upthread, I will lol if the only placement left off my ballot is Peggy Gou, b/c that's pretty close to the least banging thing on there (okay, except for some weird experimental shit that doesn't have beats, but is harsh in other ways).

emil.y, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:42 (five years ago) link

slow burn is a great song with perhaps the best production ever

ufo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:42 (five years ago) link

I confess the second verse is just a little too dopey even for me, voted for a different Kacey tune

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:42 (five years ago) link

So, apparently it's a tune by that guy from Community? Why do people hate it?

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:43 (five years ago) link

If another 1975 track places and Blackpink don't make it I'm changing my vote on Simon's poll.

no way are blackpink making it though, i don't think there was much love for ddu-du ddu-du from the thread

But... it bangs. Almost nothing from this poll bangs. I NEED BANG.

Blackpink was my #1 so i did my best emil.y

oscar bravo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:43 (five years ago) link

more like "dope"-y

omar little, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:43 (five years ago) link

Also going back to something imago was saying, I dunno why you think Baby Shark will make it and it's such a bugbear of yours? I put it at #25 because I felt like it deserved a nod for being ubiquitous and memey, but there didn't seem to be a huge pro-Baby Shark movement?

bc it's really more of an event music video than a good song

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:43 (five years ago) link

i don't hate it but that's bc i don't rate it

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:44 (five years ago) link

Kacey Musgraves not really my thing but I’ll agree that this song is executed with good taste.

be real tho it was a v cool video

I regret not voting for Threatin's 'Living Is Dying' (came out in 2017 but year of impact, etc.).

pomenitul, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:45 (five years ago) link

I guess we're all Tuomas some time: wtf is Baby Shark? I did a google and it didn't help

rob, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:45 (five years ago) link

I very much fear that Burna Boy is at #78 (and possibly at #79 and #80 as well)

breastcrawl, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:46 (five years ago) link

This is the closest thing to actual music so far

i know, but forks also always ends up putting 78 - 100 in too which gets my hackles up so i'm just doing my own this year :-)

i think i know which chord you mean, it's one of those devastating minor chords that really solidified the neil young comparison for me

Ridiculously ear-wormy kid's tune that went hugely viral, not even *from* 2018 but was everywhere last year and I think finally hit the charts in January this year? Lots of spin-offs and stuff, Kpop artists doing the dance on TV shows, little kid instas demanding it off Alexa, etc etc...

emil.y, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:48 (five years ago) link

for emily:

grady, i will start a separate playlist for the 177 if it bugs you that much. :-)

You googled Baby Shark and it didn't help ? One of either Google, the Internet or you must have done something wrong.

Nabozo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:48 (five years ago) link

I don't keep up with bobbins, but this Eris Drew is great and I appreciate that bobbins in the top 77 are more often than not ranked in the order in which I will appreciate them.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:48 (five years ago) link

always surprised that "slow burn" is the non-singles pick off the album, as great as it is

J0rdan S., Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:48 (five years ago) link

my sound engineer friend wouldn't stfu about how good the production on this album was this year. i don't really have an ear for that, but it really does sound incredible

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:49 (five years ago) link

the whole Kacey Musgraves album sounded extremely good this past summer, it soundtracked a lot of sunset drives around L.A. for me.

omar little, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:49 (five years ago) link

xp
well what confused me was what emil.y pointed out: it's quite old at this point so I didn't get why it would be under contention for this year

rob, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:50 (five years ago) link

"love is a wild thing" would have been my musgraves track vote

ufo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:50 (five years ago) link

Feel like the whole TIA thing is going to be like when we were predicting Gangnam Style would miss the 77 altogether and then it went straight into the top 10.

Matt DC, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:50 (five years ago) link

Love to see gr80 back for this! \m/

Lol at the 1975 double whammy

20: Empress Of – “When I’m With Him” – 282 points – 10 votes
video

http://www.thesinglesjukebox.com/?p=26271

Los Angeles is an inherently isolating city, with every neighborhood splattered across its sprawl and a commute culture consisting of personal transportation boxes. Even natives can’t help but feel disconnected from the city that birthed them, one that can’t help but push its people away. “When I’m With Him” is, by itself, a masterful exploration of loneliness in love; the panic attack toms and prom-ready synth glaze make your heart feel like it’s trapped in amber, while Lorely Rodriguez’s weathered wail reaches out through the darkness. But watching Rodriguez smolder through the streets where I grew up in the song’s video only deepens “With Him”’s resonance, especially after several years away. You can live inside L.A. your whole life and still feel like an outsider. Watching it through that lens, Empress Of’s pointed Spanish asides cut even deeper: “I distance myself more and you can’t see it.” There’s nothing more crushing than giving all of yourself to something that doesn’t need you. – Julian Axelrod

Since long before I was old enough to understand it, September has filled me with a penetrating, intangible malaise — the watery sun, receding daylight hours, florid leaves (magnificent, but undeniably terminal). “When I’m With Him” captures this soft decay exquisitely. Set against a fuzzy, sepia-hued drift, Rodriguez sings of the autumn of a relationship; the inexplicable, irreversible atrophy of romantic feelings. It’s a close cousin of Solange’s “Losing You,” and like Solange, Rodriguez’s timbre is one of resignation, undercut with a profound sadness; listen for the beautiful, poignant waver on “trying but don’t know why-y-y” in the middle eight. She’s submitting to the change of season, but still reluctant to let go of the vestiges of the one that’s already disappearing into the rearview. – Vikram Joseph

perfectly fine shambhala but i wish it did something more with the bridge? but yeah this feels too high

ufo, Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:53 (five years ago) link

kind of a nothing chorus imo but nice enough

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 31 January 2019 16:54 (five years ago) link

It’s a close cousin of Solange’s “Losing You,”

accounts somewhat for my weird indifference to it despite it containing a lot of stylistic flourishes i love
