This is the funniest back and forth on ILM in ages.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 January 2019 22:52 (five years ago) link

enjoying Will M's write-up

seriously, what was with the Gambino joke number one at the end? did ILM hate it? have I missed something here? it's a good song

frame casual (dog latin), Thursday, 31 January 2019 22:54 (five years ago) link

it got a lot of upturned noses in the nominations thread, and as the results were rolling out, plenty of folx here consider it more of the audio segment of a video stunt than a song in its own right

Credible people do not think it’s a good song.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 31 January 2019 22:56 (five years ago) link

and i'm so not getting this Peggy Gou song. that said, I'd only heard one tune by her until now, and this wasn't it. It doesn't share much in common with Inspector Norse to my ears though...? Maybe need to go back to it.

frame casual (dog latin), Thursday, 31 January 2019 22:57 (five years ago) link

MAN BEHIND CURTAIN says: as with baby shark, it seemed like the sort of oddball thing that could reasonably have either won the whole thing or not gotten a single vote

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 31 January 2019 22:57 (five years ago) link

the relationship to Inspector Norse is that it's another surprise bobbins track that bubbled up and won its respective polling year... i think way back in 2012?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 31 January 2019 22:57 (five years ago) link

this is america was the #1 pick on nearly every critics EOY list but the consensus here was it's just ok at best

hmmm.. i guess it is intrinsic with the video but I like it well enough on its own.

frame casual (dog latin), Thursday, 31 January 2019 22:58 (five years ago) link

And to be completely honest, i don't understand the love for Gou either; it's a perfectly nice song but I don't understand how it became the consensus thing that 30 people thought was best in its field, much less across all genres! Life is funny!

I plucked Sonini from my ballot in favour of more 'credible' SA house ;-p

Here's the tunes in my ballot, they were ranked but I forgot to save the ranked list, so they're in alphabetical order. "Koskematon" was my #1 on the ranked list too, though.

Bolded the ones that didn't place:

Adikia ft. Mon-Sala, Sofa, Donatella, F & Yas Lo - Koskematon
AK - Vlexaa
Barbara Panther - Feminine
Bucie & Mpumi - Soz'Uphinde
Chaka Khan - Like Sugar
Dladla Mshunqisi - Pakisha

Donato Dozzy – Cleo
Eris Drew - Hold Me (T4T Embrace Mix)
Fever Ray - Wanna Sip (Olof Dreijer Remix)
Heavy K - Ndibambe
Hollie Cook - Stay Alive
Janelle Monáe - Screwed
Liisanpuisto - Itse teossa
Los Ángeles Azules ft. Natalia Lafourcade - Nunca Es Suficiente
Nao - Drive and Disconnect
Neneh Cherry - Natural Skin Deep
Niniola - Saro

Octo Octa - Beam Me Up (To the Goddess Mix)
Rap Against Dictatorship - Prathet Ku Mee
Roberta ft. Lady Blacktronika - Pain & Pleasure

Rosalía - Malamente
Shy FX ft. Lily Allen & Stamina MC - Roll The Dice
Simmy - Umahlalela
Yemi Alade - Issokay
Zûg - Felicidad

I was a bit surprised Nao nor Neneh Cherry didn't make it to the 77, hopefully they'll do better in the albums poll... Their albums were pretty much my favourite pop records of the year, alongside Monáe.

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:02 (five years ago) link

I would never have pegged (ahem, sorry) 'Itgehane' for number one song of the year, but I voted for it, and it's the best track in the top ten so I'm happy.

emil.y, Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:03 (five years ago) link

like "inspector norse" "itgehane" came out towards the beginning of the calendar year and just felt inescapable on dancefloors for the twelve months that followed. i think that type of lead time helps on polls like this for bobbins tracks. also it's extremely warm and feel-good

monotony, Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:03 (five years ago) link

"Itgehane" is nice, but I didn't like it enough to include it in my ballot, tho I'm definitely happy it won instead of some fartsy rock song. Still, it makes me wonder if ILX ever gets tired of this specific kind of retro sound in dance music, I certainly have.

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:08 (five years ago) link

it's a beautiful sparkling construction, glassy network of bell sounds otm

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:09 (five years ago) link

I'm listening to the Peggy Gou again and still not really getting it.

Without wanting to use the phrase 'wall-paper music', I feel like this arch, head-noddy vibe has been done to death. The combination of Gou's detached delivery and the two-chord keys scream 'pastiche' to me - a takeoff of mid-2000s hipster house culture or the kind of music that got played in trendy city bars as an aural cushion.

Listening closer, I'll say it is wonderfully layered and there's some quite nice bubbly 303 stuff, but track of the year?

frame casual (dog latin), Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:28 (five years ago) link

I'm definitely happy it won instead of some fartsy rock song.

So sick of all the fartsy rock songs that place number one, year in, year out

frame casual (dog latin), Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:29 (five years ago) link

Look, after last year's #1, I would have been happy with a recording of LJ farting and TT banging on a pot for 4:19.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:30 (five years ago) link

xp re: Gou, it may well grow on me. I like house/bobbins music but this aesthetic isn't something I relate to in many ways

It’s pleasant and QuickTime but it sounds safe and ancient next to something like Midnight Starring.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:31 (five years ago) link

i imagine the secret keys to Itgehane would emerge if you heard it out in the wild enough but that's just not my experience. it's good but i don't like it as much as six other electro tracks that charted far lower.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:31 (five years ago) link

Not QuickTime, quirky, lol «smartphone»

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:32 (five years ago) link

That Midnight Starring song ain't no great shakes. Wanna try again?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:33 (five years ago) link

I remember back in 2012 thinking that "Inspector Norse" was really great and nice and bouncy but being slightly surprised at all the praise, and then I spent the next five years watching it blow up dancefloors and fill everyone thereon with such joy.

I wouldn't be surprised if "Itgehane" has a pretty long shelflife actually.

Tim F, Thursday, 31 January 2019 23:33 (five years ago) link

JF - I had to check to remember what 2017's number one was and yep, I don't get that track either.

See now Inspector Norse had (and still has) instant appeal for me.

Midnight Starring is very cool. I feel like I could overload on SA house - most of what I hear is either very much in this style or more like Sun-El Musician, but there's usually some sort of curveball that sets each track apart. Busiswa is amazing.

Almost every song in that pop category rocks harder than The 1975.

kind of side-eyeing "Spanish Language" as a genre, but then I organize my music geographically so...

rob, Friday, 1 February 2019 00:19 (five years ago) link

well, it was either that, "Latin," or "Global" and then fold in the K-Pop and Afropop and none of those things felt appropriate. I suppose I coulda gone with "Flamenco" but then that's just Rosalía and nothing else!
I hear you though. I could use better definitions when it comes to some of this stuff.

six months pass...

Heads up for anyone planning on voting in 2019 who doesn't quite feel plugged into that ILM vibe that I've been on the watchtower pulling tracks from all the yearly genre threads and organizing them by month. If you wanna take a blind stab at the past eight months of talked about music (or, you know, about the 75%-85% of it that shows up on spotify), give these 1100+ songs a go and you'll be zeitgeisty as can be:
