Autechre piece didn't seem particularly experimental tbf.

KKB otoh

Anyway I've got the 177 playlist going. Will report anything I particularly enjoy. Yves Tumor song is preferable in isolation

imago, Friday, 1 February 2019 14:32 (five years ago) link

does someone have a link for the 177?

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Friday, 1 February 2019 14:33 (five years ago) link

Linked near top of stats thread!

i see it - cheers!

I've been trying to 'enjoy' Yves Tumour for a while but I'm not sure I can quite get my head around them. It's not very 'pleasant' music and yet it's all over the place stylistically, unlike other stuff they get compared to like Chino Amobi which is just pure apocalyptic all the way through, or serpentwithfeet which is more like chamber pop

Just one? Adorno wept.

Its old skool experimental (though not as old as 1912), a few textures that drift along that kind of thing.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 1 February 2019 14:46 (five years ago) link

Seemingly throwaway CRJ track much better than almost all the pop in the actual 77

imago, Friday, 1 February 2019 14:49 (five years ago) link

Oh I'm just saying there should have been way more than a mere token pick (which I like btw).

KKB doesn't quite cut it. An outro is not enough to épater le bourgeois.

xp

pomenitul, Friday, 1 February 2019 14:51 (five years ago) link

KKB is just some indie rock that gets noisy at the end. lol

xyzzzz__, Friday, 1 February 2019 14:52 (five years ago) link

I don't think there shouldn't be any space for that stuff unless its good. Which the autechre (from samples) wasn't. At this point its as much of a look back as Oasis.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 1 February 2019 14:54 (five years ago) link

(from samples)

This is where you went wrong.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 1 February 2019 14:58 (five years ago) link

It makes more sense in the context of the NTS sessions as a whole.

pomenitul, Friday, 1 February 2019 14:58 (five years ago) link

Absolutely. It's a cathartic closer.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 1 February 2019 15:00 (five years ago) link

I'm unfamiliar with a lot of autechre's back cat, have they ever used samples?

anyway this was fun, I quite liked the top end of the list, thank you all

ogmor, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:05 (five years ago) link

There are a few tracks, especially early on (notably Basscadet, Under BOAC) that use samples, but if they make any extensive use of them, they're manipulated to high heaven

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 1 February 2019 15:06 (five years ago) link

You wouldn't just say to people you need the whole of a big book or whatever to get it. Its perfectly fine to sample.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:08 (five years ago) link

I do think of All End as more of a statement track or some sort of contextual piece than something that works alone. It's not representative of their sound and while it's fairly interesting in the way the drone shifts around, I don't think of it as being much different from other extended drone pieces that exist

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 1 February 2019 15:08 (five years ago) link

Something like violvoic or e0 fromt he NTS sessions would have been a more representative highlight, although I see why All End was chosen.

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 1 February 2019 15:10 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I described my ambivalence earlier, but an hour-long noise drone probably needs to be listened to in its full duration to be evaluated. xp to LBI

Actually…

pomenitul, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:12 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend judging Moby Dick based on excerpts either.

silent as a seashell Julia (Sund4r), Friday, 1 February 2019 15:16 (five years ago) link

(But it may be weird to see it pop up on a short-story poll...)

hmmm i judged it on its name (moby dick) and one of its covers (whale) and i judged it as "VERY good" and so far as i understand i was correct

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Friday, 1 February 2019 15:19 (five years ago) link

Does "tracks" imply brevity? xp

silent as a seashell Julia (Sund4r), Friday, 1 February 2019 15:20 (five years ago) link

I listened to all of All End and it certainly wasn't groundbreaking. Was it different from all the other tracks? Yes. Would the poll results have been better with (a lot) more variety? Yes, as Matt pointed out even within popular music this was a rather narrow vein.

rob, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:20 (five years ago) link

we're all getting old

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 1 February 2019 15:21 (five years ago) link

xxp No, but its length does make it an anomaly. I’m not saying it should be dq’d or anything... it’s actually pretty impressive that it placed, given its nature

I'm just saying the blues-rock riff doesn't really give you a sense of Bonham's extended solo.

This twitter account on Moby Dick is what got me to read the book (years of just lazily thinking that I don't need to read about whaling):

Hahaha

pomenitul, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:28 (five years ago) link

In fact there are a lot of excerpts from big books on twitter, or people sharing favourite passages that convince you to commit a large chunk of time to very big books.

I know a drone might be a different business although the lenghty drones I like pull me in quite quickly (some are longer than an hour). I didn't get that sense from autechre.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:28 (five years ago) link

Sund4r otm

xyzzzz__, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:31 (five years ago) link

Seriously, though, it's meant as a palate cleanser. It's worth at least sampling the other tracks to appreciate the contrast.

pomenitul, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:31 (five years ago) link

can definitely see why people consider 'all end' the highlight of those sessions but it's a really weird track to place in this context, especially when the NTS Sessions are full of absolute corkers that probably would've converted a few of you lot

frogbs, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:32 (five years ago) link

did anything from elseq place in 2016?

frogbs, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:32 (five years ago) link

frogbs otm, I get the impression it was a consensus pick to get something from the NTS Sessions on the singles poll

I can't remember, did we break them out by individual session for the albums poll?

mh, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:36 (five years ago) link

no, I just voted for them as a whole, which again is a bit odd b/c each of the 4 sessions on their own is almost certainly longer than anything else that'll place

so I guess in some sense, an hour-long track making the singles poll is pretty in character for Autechre

frogbs, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:38 (five years ago) link

Is that the longest track to make any of these singles polls?

jmm, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:39 (five years ago) link

no - Nyan Cat and Bieber extended beat it by a fair few hours I think

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 1 February 2019 15:41 (five years ago) link

You do need to listen to all 10 hours of Nyan Cat to get it.

jmm, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:47 (five years ago) link

Also true of this:

pomenitul, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:49 (five years ago) link

imo you don’t particularly need to listen to all of the nts sessions but i’d recommend at least listening to the beginning of nts 4 just to get the sense that “all end” is not necessarily a singular, ground-breaking, mind-bending drone (though it is mind-bending) but is more of a destination

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Friday, 1 February 2019 15:51 (five years ago) link

NTS 2 is more fun though.

(yes I'm turning this into another Autechre thread)

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 1 February 2019 15:52 (five years ago) link

Maybe silly to vote for a destination in a tracks poll tho?

I dunno, you kids and your polls

Brex Avery (Noodle Vague), Friday, 1 February 2019 15:53 (five years ago) link

my brain is broken because it just came up with "baby shark (extended autechre mix)"

mh, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:53 (five years ago) link

bloop bloop bloop bloop bloop bloop

jmm, Friday, 1 February 2019 15:54 (five years ago) link

well i didn’t vote for it! but as part of a listening experience i can see why ppl isolated it, it is a massively heavy and impressive end to the project
