i actually got blown off my bike this morning - literally blown sideways right off it and into the road :/ was trying to turn left downhill and leaning into the wind and it blew me off sideways uphill. was lucky with positions of cars. hella windy...

emsk, Thursday, 31 January 2008 14:26 (sixteen years ago) link

wow, thats unlucky and pretty lucky at once.

i once saw a teammate get blown off his bike in front of me racing up mt evans. he was only 120 pounds in 60 mph gusts though.

Hunt3r, Thursday, 31 January 2008 16:53 (sixteen years ago) link

There's very little chance I'll ever be blown sideways off my bike by wind, because I always seem to be riding straight into it. No matter which direction I'm traveling.

Super Cub, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:01 (sixteen years ago) link

i wonder if "work" is a decent enough excuse to get a bike with S&S couplers....

this is yr chance to get the cx frame you want- get a ritchey breakaway cx frame.

Hunt3r, Thursday, 31 January 2008 17:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Those things are crazy expensive. Isn't it like $1000 for a frameset?

Super Cub, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:10 (sixteen years ago) link

theyre not cheap, tho ive seen used ones pop up on craigs and ebay. s&s are also pretty expensive from what i recall. neither are considered user friendly for quick deployment from what ive read.

i think a cheaper folder is what is required here but im guessin

Hunt3r, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:19 (sixteen years ago) link

CX frameset is actually $1,350. Yikes. Also I read once that the Ritchey breakaways take some time and effort to break down. Not the kind of thing you want to do multiple times a day. I don't know if that's really the case or not though.

I vote for this, although I've never ridden a folding bike in general or a Dahon in particular:

Super Cub, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:20 (sixteen years ago) link

It's got a Nexus8 drivetrain BTW.

Super Cub, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:24 (sixteen years ago) link

that looks great

i really like my nexie8, but for convenience, shimano must figure out how to do it as a quickrelease hub.

Dear You Guys,

Read about Chicago's weather for today's daily bicycle log. In that shit from 8-5. Secretly I sort of love it, though; fresh powder on a road bike is the closest I'll get to real deal freshies.

Hey so I'm going to get a new bike in the next month. Very happy times. Availability is limited here and shipping is hella expensive. So a couple of local bikes shops will have these two bikes coming in the next couple of weeks. Both fixed/SS, but otherwise pretty different (steel/Al, $600/$850, etc.).

Raleigh Rush Hour

Cannondale Capo

Any opinions much appreciated.

Super Cub, Friday, 1 February 2008 06:54 (sixteen years ago) link

They're both pretty (not much of an opinion I know)

Mark C, Friday, 1 February 2008 09:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Of those, I like the Raleigh better but of the Raliegh single speeds I prefer the One Way for its oldschool look.

Ed, Friday, 1 February 2008 11:04 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know much about new bikes so I can't comment on the merits, but the copy on the Cannondale website is making me hate.

"Freewheel it or fix it. You can either coast or practice your track stand for stop and go traffic. Winner of blah blah race and countless deliveries to metro areas."

Shut the hell up, don't you have an alleycat to be at?

Laurel, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:50 (sixteen years ago) link

sorry i have no been logging, cyclist friends

i am still at it 100%, bounced back after that one week off the bike pretty well, still doing strength training at the gym twice a week (today was gym)

i'll start rogging again, i swear. tomorrow i have a five hour ride.

cutty, Friday, 1 February 2008 17:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Ed that Raleigh looks like it has its own gravitational field.

Mark C, Friday, 1 February 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

the black cannondale mouse-over has vertical drop outs

dan m, Friday, 1 February 2008 21:58 (sixteen years ago) link

haha, it does. That's bizarre.

Super Cub, Friday, 1 February 2008 22:24 (sixteen years ago) link

i like that oneway. "what if rivendells were fairly practical?"

wow do you really need 65mm of fork offset on 72 deg head angle? that leaves a pretty low trail bike (about 39mm according to Kogswell calculator)

Hunt3r, Saturday, 2 February 2008 01:23 (sixteen years ago) link

i really like the oneway too. looks like excellent commuter bike.

cutty, Saturday, 2 February 2008 14:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Brooks standard on the bike is pretty darn cool.

Super Cub, Saturday, 2 February 2008 20:09 (sixteen years ago) link

ooh i really like that one way

haitch, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 01:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Just put down a deposit on the Raleigh Rush Hour. Due to arrive in a week or two. Will update.

Super Cub, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 02:15 (sixteen years ago) link

ddb: Yeah, you'd only know that if you ever came out with us, ever.

Laurel, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 15:48 (sixteen years ago) link

coming up to an intersection today saw a late 20s/30s commuter guy kind of spazzing out on his MTB inbetween cars [Alex: market and 8th]. as i approach, he jumps off his bike, throws his bike to the ground in front of the car to his left, and starts yelling into that car's window: "you want a piece of me, i'll rip your goddamn head off you stupid motherfucker" just as the light turned green.

I just rode past and said "you tell him!"

My bike got stolen. I've been riding my Huffy but it is tiny in comparison to me meanwhile somewhere out there a bike thief looks ridiculous riding this oversize thing.

This all ultimately resulted in me resentuflly prowling the streets in ridiculous cold weather having PeeWee's Big Adventure moments of visions of people riding it just out of the corner.

bad luck dude. insured?

first commute on bike in month (again). sweaty, exhausted, out of shape.

ledge, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Haha nice one Tom. I cycled today too - I'm *just about* keeping my fitness at a certain level, but I need to start building up soon for the Paris trip - I really, really want to take advantage of the motivation to move to another level.

Mark C, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 11:39 (sixteen years ago) link

PUT THE ROAD BIKE ON THE ROLLERS TODAY FOR A BIT...I HATE THEM...THEN RODE FIX TO WORK...LATER SOME MTB VIDEO GAME.

ddb, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 17:12 (sixteen years ago) link

how much should I pay for a service (this is in the UK)? I have never paid for one before.

caek, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 18:01 (sixteen years ago) link

"service" of a bike, not a willy

caek, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 18:01 (sixteen years ago) link

bike commuting is soooo satisfying
i did it friday but it's too cold for me this week

sleep, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 18:28 (sixteen years ago) link

service usually costs....$45? in my hood. mostly that's a clean and maintenance of all the lines/brakes/deraillers. truing wheels is extra most of the time.

tonight i'm going to open workshop to figure out what the fuck is wrong with my touring bike.

gbx, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I should get some rollers and figure that out. Someone from the shop wants to get enough women together for a roller race sometime soonish??? Not me, I'd be eaten alive. I could be getting in shapier, though.

Laurel, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 22:31 (sixteen years ago) link

slightly less sweaty today - although i'm wearing slightly thinner clothing and decided it would be a good idea to pump my tyres up to slightly more than 20psi.

maybe tomorrow i'll break out the gps and heart-rate monitor. woo!

i reckon a uk bike service should cost around £20-25?

ledge, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 09:26 (sixteen years ago) link

There's a bike shop in Putney where they dismantle your bike and give it a full service... for £89.

Mark C, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 10:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Tom, £25 isn't even an hour's worth of labour in most industries, are you sure you're not underestimating a bit?

Mark C, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 10:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Hm, Evans' stage one service is £55 so I guess you're right - http://www.evanscycles.com/servicing.jsp?item_id=441

I still think that's exorbitant thought. Assuming all those checks don't find anything amiss, the only really time-consuming task there is the drive-train cleaning.

ledge, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 11:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Evans' stage 2 service (£125) is the same as the £89 one I mentioned above. I guess I need to bite the bullet and get it done, especially if I'm not getting a new bike.

Mark C, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 11:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Same here, for the same reason. Still, £100 or thereabouts is a lot cheaper than £500 or whatever. I did buy some muc-off in Condor the other week (2 for 1 offer), it's still in a bag somewhere. I really have no idea where I'd start in trying to clean my bike. A service should fix shonky brakes and dodgy headset, which would be a good thing, although they haven't killed me yet..

Bocken Social Scene, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 11:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah - I can clean my bike but it's not going to do 10% of the necessary!

Mark C, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 13:24 (sixteen years ago) link

courtesy of a 1' deep 3' round pothole on 15 St, i have trashed my rear rim (deep flat spot). gaaaaaaaaaah. i was in traffic at about 20 mph and saw it at the last minute, got my front wheel over it. couldn't really hop as i had a full pannier and trunk on the back. so. pissed. off. waaaaah.
