Seems pretty laggy online, at least according to my kids...

DJI, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 00:25 (five years ago) link

well I guess you should grind it out against your kids and git gud~

moose; squirrel (silby), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 00:35 (five years ago) link

which chars do you like to play? all the anime sword dudes are pretty easy because their normal attacks have bigger hitboxes

ciderpress, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 00:44 (five years ago) link

more seriously I'd say make sure you know how to shield, grab, throw, use your normal (A button) attacks and aerial attacks. When my sister and I were small playing Smash on N64 I'm pretty sure we only believed in special (B button) attacks for a long time.

moose; squirrel (silby), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 00:47 (five years ago) link

like not use them well necessarily just get the inputs down.

moose; squirrel (silby), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 00:48 (five years ago) link

I’m getting there. Back in the day, we would play 4-player free-for-alls with weapons so it never felt that bad to lose. Much worse in a 1:1 battle. I’ve been using Ganandorf and I can beat L9 CPUs like 25% of the time. My kids play faster characters and have gotten really evilly good at spiking and edge-guarding. I think that’s my next frontier, but that shit feels particularly cruel.

DJI, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 01:48 (five years ago) link

it's just part of the game, think of it like having someone stuck in the corner in a trad fighter

'scorbunny' sounds like a gross website or an english countryside depending on how you pronounce it. neither is acceptable.

say it with sausages (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 17:30 (five years ago) link

also, fucking green chimpanzee would be called groopanzee and wouldn't have a tail. visit a goddamn zoo.

you should have checked snopes.com to see if grookey really is a chimp. you would have found a soundcloud of the bestie boys singing "grass monkey. that funky monkey." is my point.

ciderpress, Thursday, 28 February 2019 15:38 (five years ago) link

i was trying to have a comically serious argument w/ will m about the best new pokemon. perhaps the cohen testimony leaked in too much.

Sure, but with a decent designer it can look as good as titles of old.

na (NA), Friday, 8 March 2019 15:12 (five years ago) link

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 March 2019 15:16 (five years ago) link

^same, thanks NA. Fe looks up my alley too--anyone played it?

rob, Friday, 8 March 2019 15:27 (five years ago) link

i think i wishlisted it because it showed up on a few end-of-the-year lists

na (NA), Friday, 8 March 2019 15:33 (five years ago) link

gris is really good. play it on a big screen with good headphones/stereo imo

ciderpress, Friday, 8 March 2019 16:24 (five years ago) link

yeah I'm excited for that. Am I right in thinking that the difficulty level is fairly gentle?

rob, Friday, 8 March 2019 16:29 (five years ago) link

yeah it's a v easy puzzle platformer, the appeal is that it's an audiovisual marvel

ciderpress, Friday, 8 March 2019 16:30 (five years ago) link

oof did the first quarter of gris yesterday

absolutely stunning :)

nxd, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 11:03 (five years ago) link

more evidence that whoever is running the nintendo online thing doesn't actually like or know anything about NES games

https://kotaku.com/startropics-on-switch-is-missing-the-clue-you-need-to-b-1833384044

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 00:57 (five years ago) link

don't get me wrong - i was very excited to pick up my switch last night and realize that i could now play kid icarus, a classic game that i never played back in the day and never got around to emulating. but they're "reissued" is so incredibly bare bones, like literally the minimum possible effort. and even the SP versions of the games, which in the right hands could be a really cool idea, somehow always end up being something that i'm not even tempted to try

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 00:58 (five years ago) link

startropics was never released in japan so the ppl running the service probably don't know much about it yes

ciderpress, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 01:15 (five years ago) link

i don't know if that's supposed to be a gotcha or whatever but my point still stands that they make the minimum effort. imagine having the opportunity to re-release these games, and all the interesting things they could do. they could just email whoever runs @supermariobroth and ask them for a few ideas about old concept art they could share, or pay someone $150 to write a decent blurb for the games, or dig up an old interview with Miyamoto from schmuplations, or reward players for beating a game with some sort of gamebreaking cheat, or put up global leaderboards for certain games, etc etc etc.

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 01:25 (five years ago) link

also, if i were re-releasing some japanese game that i'd never played and was never released in the united states, i'd probably spend half an hour reading the wikipedia page on it before putting it out just to make sure it didn't have a hardcore sex scene after Act II or whatever

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 01:26 (five years ago) link

takes me 30 minutes to read a wikipedia page btw
