gris is really good. play it on a big screen with good headphones/stereo imo
― ciderpress, Friday, 8 March 2019 16:24 (five years ago) link
yeah I'm excited for that. Am I right in thinking that the difficulty level is fairly gentle?
― rob, Friday, 8 March 2019 16:29 (five years ago) link
yeah it's a v easy puzzle platformer, the appeal is that it's an audiovisual marvel

more evidence that whoever is running the nintendo online thing doesn't actually like or know anything about NES games

don't get me wrong - i was very excited to pick up my switch last night and realize that i could now play kid icarus, a classic game that i never played back in the day and never got around to emulating. but they're "reissued" is so incredibly bare bones, like literally the minimum possible effort. and even the SP versions of the games, which in the right hands could be a really cool idea, somehow always end up being something that i'm not even tempted to try
― but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 00:58 (five years ago) link
startropics was never released in japan so the ppl running the service probably don't know much about it yes
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 01:15 (five years ago) link
i don't know if that's supposed to be a gotcha or whatever but my point still stands that they make the minimum effort. imagine having the opportunity to re-release these games, and all the interesting things they could do. they could just email whoever runs @supermariobroth and ask them for a few ideas about old concept art they could share, or pay someone $150 to write a decent blurb for the games, or dig up an old interview with Miyamoto from schmuplations, or reward players for beating a game with some sort of gamebreaking cheat, or put up global leaderboards for certain games, etc etc etc.
― but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 01:25 (five years ago) link
also, if i were re-releasing some japanese game that i'd never played and was never released in the united states, i'd probably spend half an hour reading the wikipedia page on it before putting it out just to make sure it didn't have a hardcore sex scene after Act II or whatever
― but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 01:26 (five years ago) link
takes me 30 minutes to read a wikipedia page btw
― but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 01:27 (five years ago) link
gotta read slowly to savor all the hardcore sex scene info
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 01:42 (five years ago) link
it wasn't really supposed to be a gotcha. the impression i get repeatedly is that the people who work at Nintendo HQ are extremely insular to the point where they don't really know how to do services or anything other than what they've traditionally done as a company which is make hardware and games
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 01:43 (five years ago) link
finally got around to calling nintendo about the whole primary console thing and it took all of about five minutes to get sorted

also an indie sale up now, if you haven't played Yoku's Island Express yet it's 50% off, pick it up
― moose; squirrel (silby), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 17:31 (five years ago) link
PR with everything announced
Everything is "a roguelike" which apparently doesn't mean anything other than "has procedurally generated elements" at this point, which is disturbing but I'm no linguistic conservative.
Some other highlights:
The Red Lantern, a narrative/procedural first person musherRAD, third person procedural 3D action with random mutations for your protagKatana ZERO, 2d action platformer with katanaVlambeer stuffCreature in the Well, top down pinball-inspired action??Overland, a turn-based strategy zombie(?) road trip
honestly this was mostly an all-killer no-filler presentation
― moose; squirrel (silby), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 17:36 (five years ago) link
RAD is a doublefine game notably. its got their style
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 17:37 (five years ago) link
I hope Cadence of Hyrule is the first of many (or at least several) indie games getting to play with Nintendo IP.
― moose; squirrel (silby), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 17:39 (five years ago) link
crypt of the necrodancer is good because it is actually a real roguelike under the rhythm mechanic, none of this rogue-lite nonsense
katana zero and creature in the well look various levels of interesting. blaster master zero 2 will be a good retro game like everything inti creates makes but i kinda got tired of those
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 17:40 (five years ago) link
Vlambeer stuff
INCLUDING NUCLEAR THRONE ffs. it's available right now! buy it if you haven't played it already because it is AMAZING.

fwiw the ps4/vita versions of nuclear throne are still buggy so caveat emptor

discovered I could use the weird points received on my 5 year work anniversary toward eshop gift cards. Got yoku, which is fun as promised.

― ciderpress, Thursday, 21 March 2019 13:09 (five years ago) link
pinball still so primally satisfying. I would never buy a straight pinball game, though. These things were likely said to pitch yoku, but they are true.

my partner has no interest in games and is pretty resistant to anything switch-related, but she really dug yoku

what is "roguelike"?
― Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:51 (five years ago) link
it's a game that's like "Rogue"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_(video_game)
ilx will break that link - you'll need to add the final )
― koogs, Thursday, 21 March 2019 15:09 (five years ago) link
roguelikes are games with randomly generated levels and no saves/continues/permanent progression, when you die you start over from the beginning in a newly randomized world.
named after rogue, an ascii tile based dungeon crawler from the 80s that spawned many alike games before the term got widened to more styles of gameplay with modern indie games
― ciderpress, Thursday, 21 March 2019 15:40 (five years ago) link
does FFVII hold up ? I’ve never played it
― PaulDananVEVO (||||||||), Tuesday, 26 March 2019 19:42 (five years ago) link
not particularly? they lost a lot of the original art and such for 7-9 so they're not HD remasters, it's just scaled up 3d models on top of the original 322x244 prerendered backgrounds which doesn't look great imo. there's also a music bug in 7 and 9 that they infuriatingly never fixed from the PS4 releases
gameplay wise it's still alright but pretty glacial unless you use the speedup button they added into the rereleases
