I support removing the likes/RTs from public view, can’t really think of a purpose it serves except to flatter the narcissistic and discourage conversation
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 13 March 2019 18:48 (five years ago) link
wonder how that will jibe with them specifically pushing tweets with more engagement?
― ( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 13 March 2019 18:50 (five years ago) link
suppose just status quo but without the RTs and faves visible
I dont like to like something unless everyone else has liked it first.
― pplains, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 19:03 (five years ago) link
my understanding is theyre testing not showing fav/rt nums in the timeline but then if u click through to the individual tweet youll see them, philosophically i support the concept but lmao cmon twitter is completely built on those numbers, id be surprised if they went through w it
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 20:11 (five years ago) link

its pretty funny how when social media took over like every news site was all "the conversation has moved to facebook" and turned their comments the fuck off
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 20:27 (five years ago) link
I still use tweetbot 90% of the time and it doesn't show the likes/retweets/replies numbers unless you swipe on the tweet! guess I hadn't considered the pile-ones being fueled by how much of a pile-on is already happening but it totally makes sense
imo they should not show the numbers in the feed but should instead add a little icon that says "RATIO'D" in mortal kombat typeface
― mh, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 20:51 (five years ago) link
dafuq does "ratioed" mean?
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 13 March 2019 21:06 (five years ago) link
the number of replies dwarfs the number of likes and retweets, indicating the tweet has said something exceptionally dumb or wrong and everyone is falling over backward to point that out
― mh, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 21:07 (five years ago) link
I think the examples cited became less-ratioed after the article, but M-W is on it: https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/words-were-watching-ratio-ratioed-ratioing

I guess there are a couple articles from a few years back, but some weird meme cult has been adding friends/infiltrating in the electronic music scene and this thread has been wild all afternoon:

I'm writing "a thing" about how Twitter used to be very, very different, and would welcome your memories. Mine are shot to shit.— Caitlin Moran (@caitlinmoran) March 18, 2019
The slide into the abyss started when the non-famous started to join in. Slowly this website became filled with anonymous accounts screeching away like baboons, most of them didn't even have columns to link to or careers to promote. They were just saying things for the hell of it— Simon Hedges (@Orwell_Fan) March 19, 2019

What was the horse_ebooks reveal?
― kinder, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 18:37 (five years ago) link
It was revealed that the account had been sold to buzzfeed & was being used as an art project... of some sort
― gyac, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 18:53 (five years ago) link
the slide into the abyss started when famous people started using twitter tbhiirc it was specifically when non-famous people realised famous people were using it and created accounts just to endlessly tweet their idols without ever getting a single reply.in that tiny moment between famous people being there and non-famous people piling in, the famous people had the opportunity to just be people, and it was actually really nice.

funny thing was a lot of ppl speculated that the account had changed hands and gone from bot to scripted and even identified the exact post where it happened way before the reveal, which is just the kind of insanity that makes the site good lol

one thing twitter has actually been good for: disabusing me of any residual inferiority complex I had towards certain groups of people, particularly academics, lawyers and high profile journalists
