i am putting all my hopes + dreams into goose game, it's going to be everything i've ever imagined and so much more

not sure what people are expecting it to be besides the simple comedy-stealth game they've shown

Everything is "a roguelike" which apparently doesn't mean anything other than "has procedurally generated elements" at this point, which is disturbing but I'm no linguistic conservative.

Some other highlights:

The Red Lantern, a narrative/procedural first person musher
RAD, third person procedural 3D action with random mutations for your protag
Katana ZERO, 2d action platformer with katana
Vlambeer stuff
Creature in the Well, top down pinball-inspired action??
Overland, a turn-based strategy zombie(?) road trip

honestly this was mostly an all-killer no-filler presentation

RAD is a doublefine game notably. its got their style

I hope Cadence of Hyrule is the first of many (or at least several) indie games getting to play with Nintendo IP.

crypt of the necrodancer is good because it is actually a real roguelike under the rhythm mechanic, none of this rogue-lite nonsense

katana zero and creature in the well look various levels of interesting. blaster master zero 2 will be a good retro game like everything inti creates makes but i kinda got tired of those

fwiw the ps4/vita versions of nuclear throne are still buggy so caveat emptor

discovered I could use the weird points received on my 5 year work anniversary toward eshop gift cards. Got yoku, which is fun as promised.

pinball still so primally satisfying. I would never buy a straight pinball game, though. These things were likely said to pitch yoku, but they are true.

my partner has no interest in games and is pretty resistant to anything switch-related, but she really dug yoku

roguelikes are games with randomly generated levels and no saves/continues/permanent progression, when you die you start over from the beginning in a newly randomized world.

named after rogue, an ascii tile based dungeon crawler from the 80s that spawned many alike games before the term got widened to more styles of gameplay with modern indie games

does FFVII hold up ? I’ve never played it

not particularly? they lost a lot of the original art and such for 7-9 so they're not HD remasters, it's just scaled up 3d models on top of the original 322x244 prerendered backgrounds which doesn't look great imo. there's also a music bug in 7 and 9 that they infuriatingly never fixed from the PS4 releases

gameplay wise it's still alright but pretty glacial unless you use the speedup button they added into the rereleases

iirc the overworld theme restarts after a battle so you only ever hear the first 30 seconds of it

yeah that. not just the overworld but any area so you never get to hear beyond 30 secs in any of the field/dungeon music

honestly the best way to play the game is gonna be via a modded pc version once they finish those fan patches that use machine learning to reconstruct the backgrounds in HD. they might already be available even, i'm not sure. and you also can get fan patches to fix the other bugs like the music one that have been introduced since the original release

it's still a classic game and all, it's just a lot of the appeal of those PSX FF games over their peers was spectacle and that part has aged poorly, both naturally and due to SE's poor preservation/ports

Yeah. When it came out, I remember me and most of my friends were really excited about the lengthy animation sequences for the summons. We’d watch them over and over again with patience because they looked so amazing.

But now? Those summon animations better have a skip button!

I haven’t replayed FFVII since the early 2000s, but I do worry that it wouldn’t hold up too well

yes I've been disabused of that notion by the posts above

it actually was the best game of all time but wouldn't be good at all now. you really had to be there.

its not some monolithic thing like mario 64, its more like halo 1 in that it raised the stakes for an existing genre and then everyone iterated on it for 2 generations and made some better games in the process

i guess, in the sense that there were better FPS than Halo and even the two previous FF games were better than VII but they were still exceedingly popular

esby likely otm there, dunno if i wanna play it again but it owned me for months

your time's better spent playing the Event RPGs of today imo
