i cosign the praise for nuclear throne

fwiw the ps4/vita versions of nuclear throne are still buggy so caveat emptor

discovered I could use the weird points received on my 5 year work anniversary toward eshop gift cards. Got yoku, which is fun as promised.

weird points kick ass

ciderpress, Thursday, 21 March 2019 13:09 (five years ago) link

pinball still so primally satisfying. I would never buy a straight pinball game, though. These things were likely said to pitch yoku, but they are true.

my partner has no interest in games and is pretty resistant to anything switch-related, but she really dug yoku

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:50 (five years ago) link

what is "roguelike"?

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 21 March 2019 14:51 (five years ago) link

it's a game that's like "Rogue"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_(video_game)

ilx will break that link - you'll need to add the final )

koogs, Thursday, 21 March 2019 15:09 (five years ago) link

roguelikes are games with randomly generated levels and no saves/continues/permanent progression, when you die you start over from the beginning in a newly randomized world.

named after rogue, an ascii tile based dungeon crawler from the 80s that spawned many alike games before the term got widened to more styles of gameplay with modern indie games

ciderpress, Thursday, 21 March 2019 15:40 (five years ago) link

does FFVII hold up ? I’ve never played it

PaulDananVEVO (||||||||), Tuesday, 26 March 2019 19:42 (five years ago) link

not particularly? they lost a lot of the original art and such for 7-9 so they're not HD remasters, it's just scaled up 3d models on top of the original 322x244 prerendered backgrounds which doesn't look great imo. there's also a music bug in 7 and 9 that they infuriatingly never fixed from the PS4 releases

gameplay wise it's still alright but pretty glacial unless you use the speedup button they added into the rereleases

ciderpress, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 19:59 (five years ago) link

What’s the music bug?

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 21:08 (five years ago) link

iirc the overworld theme restarts after a battle so you only ever hear the first 30 seconds of it

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 26 March 2019 21:12 (five years ago) link

yeah that. not just the overworld but any area so you never get to hear beyond 30 secs in any of the field/dungeon music

ciderpress, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 21:55 (five years ago) link

honestly the best way to play the game is gonna be via a modded pc version once they finish those fan patches that use machine learning to reconstruct the backgrounds in HD. they might already be available even, i'm not sure. and you also can get fan patches to fix the other bugs like the music one that have been introduced since the original release

ciderpress, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 21:57 (five years ago) link

it's still a classic game and all, it's just a lot of the appeal of those PSX FF games over their peers was spectacle and that part has aged poorly, both naturally and due to SE's poor preservation/ports

ciderpress, Tuesday, 26 March 2019 22:02 (five years ago) link

Yeah. When it came out, I remember me and most of my friends were really excited about the lengthy animation sequences for the summons. We’d watch them over and over again with patience because they looked so amazing.

But now? Those summon animations better have a skip button!

I haven’t replayed FFVII since the early 2000s, but I do worry that it wouldn’t hold up too well

ciderpress, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 02:05 (five years ago) link

honestly might as well for the remake at this point, even if it comes out on PS5

Nhex, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 03:42 (five years ago) link

remake is gonna be an action game i think so p different experience but yeah it could be cool

yes I've been disabused of that notion by the posts above

PaulDananVEVO (||||||||), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 21:30 (five years ago) link

it actually was the best game of all time but wouldn't be good at all now. you really had to be there.

shoulda zagged (esby), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 21:35 (five years ago) link

its not some monolithic thing like mario 64, its more like halo 1 in that it raised the stakes for an existing genre and then everyone iterated on it for 2 generations and made some better games in the process

ciderpress, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 22:00 (five years ago) link

i guess, in the sense that there were better FPS than Halo and even the two previous FF games were better than VII but they were still exceedingly popular

Nhex, Thursday, 28 March 2019 01:01 (five years ago) link

esby likely otm there, dunno if i wanna play it again but it owned me for months

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 28 March 2019 14:02 (five years ago) link

your time's better spent playing the Event RPGs of today imo

can currently get free nintendo online if you have twitch prime a.k.a. amazon prime

https://twitch.amazon.com/prime/loot/nintendo/

i don't endorse giving your money to amazon but if you already have, might as well get the most out of it

ciderpress, Thursday, 28 March 2019 20:15 (five years ago) link

to add to that, if you already have a switch subscription you can still "add on" months to it using the amazon thing

Tetris 99 is fun

I don’t know how to do T-spins so I’ll never win but I’m pretty consistently in top 10 and have come in second and third a few times

I love Tetris but T-spins are too confusing

flamboyant goon tie included, Monday, 1 April 2019 23:01 (five years ago) link

they're not too hard, i guarantee if you watch just a couple minutes' worth of videos on how to do them you'll be set (look at just doubles, not triples, which are much harder to set up + rarer to naturally occur -- doubles are easy + they're a must).

you might play slower for a little while while you're practicing set ups but it's worth it, learning those as well as s/z + j/l spins really opens up how you can play the game and it just gets way more fun when each piece has that many more options and less things break yr flow.

my twitchiness/reflexes are way too trash to play any game that requires them generally, but my win rate in this is like 7-8%. i love this game. switch best console of all time

shoulda zagged (esby), Monday, 1 April 2019 23:16 (five years ago) link

https://kotaku.com/mario-odyssey-breath-of-the-wild-will-support-labo-vr-1833825547

The VR support will be quite different between the two games. While Super Mario Odyssey will get a “bite-sized bonus experience” with a series of three mini-missions in which you collect coins and musical notes, it looks like Breath of the Wild is getting full-on VR support in the main game. You’ll simply be able to turn on the VR Goggles in the options menu and explore all of Hyrule in VR. (Pre-rendered cut scenes won’t work in VR, it said.)

na (NA), Friday, 5 April 2019 20:24 (five years ago) link

the botw one will be more like 3ds stereoscopy i assume, there's no way the switch can do dynamic VR in that game
