Turrican said that "Systems Of Romance" is one of my favorite albums of all time. I'd be interested to know what else is on your all-time list.
Meanwhile, there are so many fabulous releases on this list, for me it's one of:Adverts, Big Star, Brian Eno, Captain Beefheart, Devo, Jam, Kraftwerk, Magazine, Only Ones, Pere Ubu, PiL, Talking Heads, Television, Throbbing Gristle, Ultravox, Wire, X-Ray Spex
Really tough call between Wire and Pere Ubu, two bands who set the stage for much of what I love. I will mull it over...
Other favorites from this incredible year:Alternative TV - The Image Has CrackedBe Bop Deluxe - Drastic PlasticBuzzcocks - Another Music In A Different Kitchen / Love BitesDoctors Of Madness - Sons Of SurvivalEno Moebius Roedelius - After the Heat [would have possibly voted for this, one of my all-timers]Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel 2Generation X - Generation XLa Dusseldorf - VivaNick Lowe - Jesus Of CoolOutsiders - Close UpPenetration - Moving TargetsRezillos - Can't Stand The RezillosThe Saints - Eternally Yours / Prehistoric SoundsSiouxsie & The Banshees - The ScreamThe Stranglers - Black & WhiteTom Robinson Band - Power In The DarknessThe Walker Brothers - Nite Flights [just for Scott's four monumental tracks]XTC - White Music / Go 2

Yeah, the initial flowering of post-punk is amazing. I've read so many quotes from the participants that indicate how they didn't know they were *allowed* to make this kind of music until they heard such-and-such LP and it inspired them to go even further. The rule book was out the door, anything goes, let's meld punk energy and funk rhythms, smash rock and jazz, make really quiet-but-still-engaging music, etc. I still find it very inspiring.

Blondie vs. Devo, my two most played records that year. But Parallel Lines is "just" an excellent pop-rock record, Devo is in a world of its own.
Also-ran write-in for The Cars debut.

In this list, Music For !8 Musicians. Outside of it, one of Darkness On The Edge of Town or This Year's Model would have got my vote. But '78 was a year where singles reigned supreme, not albums.

i don't really fuck with the '80s, i'm certainly out!
before this poll is over by the way i did want to single out the winterhawk record "there and back again" particularly, it's a cheat as it was recorded in '78 but not released then, but i particularly recommend it to anybody who likes hard rock of the sorts that have been regularly featured on these polls... i'm not a real hard rock head, which might disqualify me, but i really do think "there and back again" might be one of the greatest rock live albums ever released, just insanely great twin guitar awesomeness

More impossible than ever, as I knew it would be, so gut vote this time is Parallel Lines, because it was my most played that year and maybe the next, still plays itself in my head, a vivid, poised sound and vision---think this is the one where xgau, then at his peak, mentioned "lives lived intensely on the surface," Hey Blondie: "All I want is a picture in my wallet/A small resemblance of something more solid/All I want/Is a picture of youuu." Deep enough, ditto "Fade Away and Radiate"---Top Ten of course Beefheart, Ubu, Television, Funkadelic, Willie, Chic, Mingus etc etc etc. This Year's Model always had sort of a popological laboratory quality overall---not mad scientist, more detached or over-obviously concerned with precision----overall, that is, despite, lots of individually enjoyable, even sing-along tracks. Maybe it's just me. Stopped following him when he got too prolific for my budget, which was right away.Street Legal is the most appalling Dylan album I've heard, though "Changing of the Guard's homeless rainbow brain stew imagery is a keeper for the case history, and overall you can tell he's gonna need Jesus or something. Does have some very nice arrangements, though mostly dead drums ("New Pony" the most deftly played overall, pert vocal, though lyrics seem to be about pony porn? Jeez.)

Haha this is so true re: Changing of the Guards.
It's interesting that NME ranked Peter Gabriel 2 so highly. That album gets a lot of hate from a lot of places, but I think it's one of his best.
